Most national parks ask for a ticket. Acadia asks for several things at once: an entrance pass, a separate reservation for the best-known road, a vehicle small enough for that road and, for many international visitors, an additional fee that did not exist a few years ago. A private tour of Acadia National Park with a driver is the easiest way to keep those requirements straight, because the plan is made before you leave Bar Harbor, not at a gate with a line behind you.

Before you book: the five Acadia rules that change the plan

  1. An entrance pass is required year-round. According to the National Park Service's fee page, which was last updated in January 2026, a private vehicle pass is $35 and is valid for seven days; per-person and motorcycle passes are priced separately.
  2. Non-U.S. residents aged 16 and over pay an additional $100 per person, unless they enter with an annual pass such as the Acadia Annual Pass or the America the Beautiful Pass, both of which are sold to U.S. citizens and residents. The page states these fees for 2026, and international travelers should read the current rules before they arrive.
  3. The park is cashless. The park accepts mobile payments, credit cards and debit cards at its sales outlets, not cash.
  4. Cadillac Summit Road needs a vehicle reservation from May 20 to October 25 in 2026, sold only online at Recreation.gov for $6 per vehicle, with timed entry.
  5. Vehicles over 21 feet (6.4 m), RVs and trailers cannot use the road, even with a reservation. This matters for long vehicles, including some large vans.

Check the National Park Service fee page and the Cadillac Summit Road reservation page for the current rules before you travel; fee-free days, passes and reservation windows change.

What is Acadia National Park?

Acadia National Park is a federally protected area of coast, mountains and forest on Mount Desert Island, Maine, with additional land on nearby islands and the mainland. It is known for Cadillac Mountain, the Park Loop Road, Sand Beach and its historic carriage roads.

The park's own site describes 27 miles of historic motor roads, and Sand Beach lies on the eastern side of Mount Desert Island. The signature drive is the Park Loop Road, which links viewpoints, the beach, rocky shoreline and ponds. Cadillac Mountain rises to 1,530 feet (466 m) at the summit, reached by a road of about three miles that ends in two parking areas with restrooms, a gift shop and short paved overlook walks. The carriage roads are another distinctive feature: a network of broken-stone roads for walkers and cyclists that is closed to cars.

Acadia is a place where a chauffeur adds something different from a city attraction. The roads are scenic and slow, parking at popular stops fills early, and the best light is at the edges of the day. A driver who knows when to start and which stops to skip can make the same four hours feel less hurried.

Reserve your chauffeur

Getting to Mount Desert Island from the airports

Acadia is far from the major hubs, and choosing the right airport saves hours.

  • Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (BHB): a small regional airport about 22 km (14 mi) from Bar Harbor. Confirm which airlines serve it for your dates.
  • Bangor International Airport (BGR): the nearest major airport, about 85 km (53 mi) from Bar Harbor, generally 1 to 1 hour 15 minutes by car. The airport publishes driving directions at flybangor.com.
  • Portland International Jetport (PWM): about 300 km (185 mi), usually 3.5 to 4 hours.
  • Boston Logan (BOS): about 450 km (280 mi), 5.5 to 6.5 hours by road. Our Boston Logan chauffeur service page explains terminals and waiting times, and our Boston limo service page covers city transfers.

Bangor and Portland do not have their own pages on this site, but the desk quotes both transfers in the booker. A long drive such as Boston to Bar Harbor is a good case for a chauffeur: you can sleep, work or take calls on the road, and the vehicle is there when you need it at both ends.

Driving the Park Loop Road with a chauffeur

The Park Loop Road is the heart of a one-day visit. A typical order is clockwise: the visitor center area at Hulls Cove, the ocean viewpoints, Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, the rocky coast and Jordan Pond, with the Cadillac Summit Road branching off for those with a reservation. Sections of the road are one-way, which affects the order, and the best stops fill early on summer and fall weekends.

Practical advice for a chauffeured drive:

  • Start early. A 7 a.m. start in Bar Harbor beats the day-trip crowd to the popular pullouts.
  • Pick three stops, not ten. Sand Beach, Jordan Pond and one coastal viewpoint make a full half day.
  • Ask for time at Jordan Pond. The pond has a well-known tea house, and reservation lines can be long in season.
  • Use the car as a base. Leave coats and bags in the vehicle while you walk the short paths.
  • Allow for weather. Fog is common on the coast and can hide the summit views; ask for a flexible plan.

The Island Explorer is a fare-free bus that serves many park destinations and helps avoid parking problems, but it does not serve Cadillac Summit Road, according to the park.

Cadillac Summit Road: reservations, sunrise and the vehicle rules

The 2026 rules, as published on the park's reservation page, are as follows. Reservations are required from May 20 through October 25. They cost $6 per vehicle, are sold only online at Recreation.gov and are separate from the entrance pass. About 30 percent of slots are released 90 days ahead at 10 a.m. Eastern, and the remaining 70 percent are released two days ahead at 10 a.m. Eastern. Sunrise reservations have a 90-minute entry window, with start times running from about 4 a.m. in late May to 8 a.m. in late October, and are limited to one per vehicle every seven days. Daytime reservations have a 30-minute entry window and a limit of one per vehicle per day. You must enter during your window, and re-entry is not permitted. The road closes to vehicles at 9 p.m.

A few consequences for a chauffeured day:

  1. The reservation is per vehicle. Whoever arranges the car should be clear about who holds it.
  2. Commercial operators have their own rules. The park says holders of a Commercial Use Authorization need a separate commercial reservation. Tell the desk at booking that you want the summit, and it will confirm how the day will be arranged before you rely on it.
  3. Length limits matter. A stretch limousine or a long-wheelbase van can exceed the 21-foot limit; a sedan or a Luxury SUV is normally within it.
  4. Save the confirmation. Cell service is unreliable in the park, and the park advises printing or saving the QR code.

After October 25, the summit road reservation requirement ends for the season, but the weather and road conditions can still restrict access. The park's alerts page lists current conditions.

Bar Harbor, the gateway town

Most visitors base themselves in Bar Harbor, the town on the island's east side that the local chamber of commerce, visitbarharbor.com, presents as the gateway to Acadia and Mount Desert Island. In summer and early fall the streets are busy, and on days when cruise ships are in port the waterfront can be crowded at midday, so a departure before the morning rush is worth the early alarm. Parking in town is limited, which is another reason a chauffeur pickup from your hotel door works well.

The town also shapes the timing of the day. Restaurants and shops are plentiful at lunchtime and thin out in the quieter months, and some businesses close or reduce hours outside the main season. If you arrive late from the airport, ask the desk to coordinate the arrival with your hotel's check-in time, and let the hotel know whether you want a very early start the next morning. For guests staying elsewhere on the island, such as Southwest Harbor or Northeast Harbor, the desk can set the pickup there and adjust the route accordingly.

The best season and time of day

July and August are the busiest months, and early to mid October brings fall color and cool, clear days that many people consider the best time to visit. May and June are quieter, with long daylight and fewer crowds, though fog is common. From November to April the park enters its off-season, with entrance passes still required but fewer services and some road closures.

Within a day, the edges are best. Sunrise at the summit is the most celebrated hour, but it requires a sunrise reservation, a very early departure from Bar Harbor and warm layers. Late afternoon light on the coast is a gentler alternative. Fog can come and go, so watch the forecast and keep your plan flexible.

If you are staying in Bar Harbor with no luggage, the Island Explorer is a good, low-cost way to reach several park destinations in season. A chauffeur is the better choice for the long airport leg, for a multi-stop day, for early-morning departures and for travelers who want to arrive at stops when the car park is still empty.

Accessibility and practical notes

Many viewpoints and some paths are accessible, but the terrain is rugged and most trails are not. The park publishes accessibility information; contact it before you plan a specific trail. Tell the desk if you need a ramp-equipped vehicle and it will confirm what is available for your date. Dress in layers: coastal Maine can be 10 degrees cooler than inland, and the summit is windy.

Booking a long-distance or day transfer

Because Acadia is a long way from the big airports, the booking is worth setting up carefully. Our desk works 24/7 and assigns a vetted, licensed and commercially insured Maine operator from the worldwide directory; trips inside the USA use US-licensed operators. The desk books, confirms and invoices the trip. The price is a fixed fare shown in the booker for your exact pickup and drop-off points, with no figure to negotiate on the road. Tell us early if you want the Cadillac Summit Road, a sunrise start or a specific airport, so those details are confirmed before you travel. The fleet page lists the vehicle classes, and the attractions hub and North America directory cover the rest of the continent.
