New York Penn Station car service: two buildings, one meeting point

People say "Penn Station" and mean two things. Amtrak and the Long Island Rail Road now run their daytime service out of Moynihan Train Hall, in the James A. Farley building across Eighth Avenue, while Penn Station itself sits under Madison Square Garden and carries NJ Transit, the LIRR and the overnight Amtrak service. That split catches visitors out, and it is the first thing a New York chauffeur sorts out: which building, which street and which door.

LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com books a New York Penn Station car service with a vetted local chauffeur operator from our directory, for arrivals on Amtrak, the LIRR and NJ Transit and for departures to Boston, Philadelphia, Washington and the rest of the Northeast Corridor. Our 24/7 booking desk is open around the clock, worldwide. Each ride is booked, confirmed and invoiced by our desk: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one point of contact at any hour.

Where do cars pick up at Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall?

Taxis pick up on 31st Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. Rideshare and private-car drop-off and pick-up are in the 33rd Street mid-block area between the same avenues. Moynihan is across Eighth Avenue from Penn Station, so your chauffeur needs to know which building your train uses.

Those locations come from Amtrak's station page, which also gives 351 West 31st Street as the address to enter in a navigation app. Moynihan Train Hall's own site lists 421 Eighth Avenue, between 31st and 33rd Streets, and says it is open daily from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. From 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Amtrak and LIRR service operates only from Penn Station across the avenue; see the Moynihan Train Hall site.

A community board letter from 2023 described the 31st Street taxi stand overflowing toward Eighth Avenue and into the crosswalk. Conditions change, so your chauffeur checks the curb on the day. If the curb is full, the meeting point shifts a half-block, and the driver messages you.

Your options for the meeting

  • Curbside on 33rd Street. The designated drop-off and pick-up area. Best for a driver who has your train number and is circling nearby.
  • Inside the hall. A name-board meet-and-greet is available as an add-on, with an alias on the board if you prefer privacy. Amtrak usually posts boarding gates about 15 minutes before departure, so arrival meet-ups are easier than departure ones.
  • A hotel doorman handoff. Some guests ask the hotel to release their bags to our driver in advance, so they arrive at the station without luggage. Trade accounts for concierges are available.

Free waiting on a station pickup is 15 minutes. Tell us the train number, and the desk follows the arrival time, not the schedule.

What Manhattan traffic does to a station transfer

Penn Station is in the middle of Midtown, and the roads around it have a rhythm. Eighth Avenue runs one way, the Lincoln Tunnel approaches back up in the late afternoon, and Madison Square Garden event nights put thousands of pedestrians across 31st and 33rd Streets. Allow more time on those evenings.

Manhattan also has a congestion-pricing zone for vehicles entering the local streets from 60th Street southward, in effect since January 2025 according to the MTA. Penn Station is inside it. The local operator deals with the toll, so there is nothing for you to arrange.

The practical effect is that a car beats the subway for a heavy bag, and the subway beats a car at 5 p.m. for a light traveler going three stops.

Penn Station to the airports

New York's three major airports are close in miles and far in minutes. All distances are approximate road distances from the station.

A grand railway station hall
A grand railway station hall
AirportDistanceTypical drive
LaGuardia (LGA)about 14 km (9 mi)30 to 60 minutes
John F. Kennedy (JFK)about 27 km (17 mi)45 to 90 minutes
Newark Liberty (EWR)about 23 km (14 mi)35 to 75 minutes
Teterboro (TEB), private aviationabout 19 km (12 mi)30 to 60 minutes

The wide ranges are real: the Van Wyck Expressway on a Friday afternoon, the Lincoln Tunnel at rush hour and the Queens approaches can double a drive. For airport pickups see JFK, LaGuardia and Newark. For private jets see the Teterboro page.

If you are arriving with one carry-on and your hotel is two stops away, take the subway. A car makes sense when the bags are heavy, the party is large, the airport is JFK, or you want to step off the train into a vehicle and not a queue.

Trains that use the station

Moynihan Train Hall is Amtrak's New York station. According to Amtrak, the services using it include Acela, Northeast Regional, Keystone Service to Harrisburg and Empire Service to Albany and beyond, and Boston, Philadelphia and Washington are the top destinations. Acela is Amtrak's premium downtown-to-downtown service linking Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington.

If your journey continues to Washington, our Washington Union Station page covers the other end, and the Washington, DC limo service page covers the city. For Canada, see Toronto Union Station.

A private tour with driver can be booked by the hour or the day. Licensed guides, where a site recommends them, are separate professionals; the chauffeur drives and suggests stops.

Cruise passengers and hotel transfers

The Manhattan Cruise Terminal is on the west side of Midtown, about 2.5 km (1.5 mi) from the station. See the Manhattan Cruise Terminal page for the embarkation routine. For hotel transfers, the booker accepts any Midtown, downtown or Brooklyn address.

When the train runs late, and when you go beyond the city

Northeast Corridor trains run late for the usual reasons: signal problems, weather, an earlier incident. Because the desk follows your train number and not the timetable, the driver adjusts without you calling. If a service is canceled and you are rebooked on a later train, send the new train number and the pickup moves with it. Free waiting on a station pickup is 15 minutes from the actual arrival.

Not every journey ends in Manhattan. From the station, a chauffeur can take you onward by road. Approximate road distances are 95 miles (153 km) to Philadelphia, 215 miles (346 km) to Boston and 225 miles (362 km) to Washington, with drive times that depend heavily on the hour and the weather. The Hamptons are about 100 miles (160 km) east along the Long Island Expressway, and a Friday-evening departure can take much longer than the map suggests. See long-distance car service for how those trips are arranged. For many travelers the train is the better way to cover the corridor, and a car is for the first and last miles.

Commuter lines, game nights and the last mile on Long Island or in New Jersey

Most discussion of Penn Station focuses on Amtrak, but the building is busiest because of the commuter railroads. NJ Transit and the Long Island Rail Road bring a large share of the people who work in Midtown, and the same lines carry visitors out to suburbs, beaches and private homes. A chauffeur is most valuable at either end of those trips, when a guest has a short rail ride and an awkward final stretch.

Three common patterns

  1. Rail out, car back. A guest takes the LIRR to a village on the Island, is met at a station by a pre-booked car and is driven the last few kilometers to a house, a wedding venue or a golf club. The booking is simple: station, train number and destination address. See the Long Island limo service page for the surrounding area and the Hamptons guide for the resort towns.
  2. Car out, rail back. A guest is driven from a New Jersey address to the station to avoid a hunt for parking in Midtown, then arrives at Penn on NJ Transit. The chauffeur drops at the correct street and the guest walks into the concourse with bags.
  3. Station to airport. Guests connecting from rail to Newark, LaGuardia or JFK often want a car rather than a second train. The table of airport distances above gives approximate drives, and the Newark Liberty page covers the New Jersey side.

Game nights, concerts and event overflow

Madison Square Garden sits directly above the station. On nights with a game or concert, the crowd leaving the arena merges with the commuter peak, and the streets around the station fill with pedestrians. If your train is due in at that hour, tell the desk. The chauffeur may choose a pickup point on a cross street instead of the designated area, and may ask you to wait a few minutes inside the hall until the driver confirms a clear curb.

Heavy luggage and the walk through the station

Guests with reduced mobility should ask the rail operator in advance about assistance. The chauffeur can meet you at the curb or, with the meet-and-greet add-on, inside the hall, and help with bags between the door and the car.

Corporate accounts, delegations and discretion

New York corporate travelers use the Northeast Corridor all week. A corporate account with monthly invoicing keeps every pickup on one statement, and trade accounts are available for travel agents, DMCs and hotel concierges. Trips inside the United States use US-licensed operators. Convention & visitor bureaus and other official tourist offices can book chauffeur services for their visitors with LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com through a trade account.

Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips. NDAs are signed on request, and alias bookings are accepted. We are a chauffeur service, not a security company, so we do not supply armed drivers or bodyguards, and we work alongside a client's own security team. Browse the North America directory for other regions.

Cancellation terms are fixed: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time.

Frequently asked questions

Where does a private car pick up at Moynihan Train Hall?

Amtrak lists the rideshare and pick-up/drop-off area in the 33rd Street mid-block area between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. Taxis use 31st Street between the same avenues. Your chauffeur confirms the curb and messages you before the train arrives.

What is the address for Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall?

Amtrak recommends 351 West 31st Street for navigation. The hall's own site gives 421 Eighth Avenue, across Eighth Avenue from Penn Station.

Is Moynihan Train Hall open all night?

No. It is open daily from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. Overnight, Amtrak and LIRR service uses Penn Station across the avenue.

How far is Penn Station from JFK?

About 27 km (17 mi). Allow 45 to 90 minutes depending on the Van Wyck Expressway and the time of day. LaGuardia is about 14 km (9 mi) and Newark about 23 km (14 mi).

Will you track my train?

Yes. Send us the train number and the desk follows the arrival. Free waiting on a station pickup is 15 minutes.

Is a car better than the subway?

For one light bag and a short hop in Midtown, the subway is the lowest-cost option. A car wins for heavy luggage, groups, JFK trips and early departures.

Does the congestion toll affect me?

Midtown is inside Manhattan's congestion-pricing zone, which has been in effect since January 2025. The local operator deals with it, and the booker quotes the fixed fare before you confirm.

Can you take us from the station to the Statue of Liberty ferry?

Yes. Battery Park is about 8 km (5 mi) away. Read the Statue of Liberty guide for tickets and security, and tell us your ticket time.

How do I get a fare?

Use the online booker. It shows the exact fixed fare for your addresses and vehicle before you confirm.
