A car cannot enter the heart of Times Square. That surprises first-time visitors who picture a limousine gliding under the screens, but the plaza is for people on foot. New York City's transportation department lists Times Square Plaza as running along Broadway from West 41st Street to West 53rd Street, managed in partnership with the Times Square Alliance, and open to the public every day.

So a Times Square private tour with driver is a different kind of job from a drive past a landmark. You will walk the plaza. The car's role is to deliver you to its edge at the right moment, collect you when the walking is done and make sure the evening around it, whether dinner, a show or a late flight, runs on time.

How do you get to Times Square by car?

Drive to the edge, not into the plaza. Cars use the cross streets and avenues around it: Seventh Avenue, Eighth Avenue, and 42nd to 47th Streets. A chauffeur drops you on the nearest legal corner and collects you from a quieter one. From Midtown hotels it is typically a 5 to 20 minute drive.

Broadway itself carries pedestrians and plaza furniture through the main stretch. Traffic flows around the plaza on the avenues on both sides, and the cross streets are among the most congested in the city, particularly at theatre curtain times. The practical rule is that the nearer you want to be to the screens, the further the car should wait.

Good drop-off points

  • West 42nd Street near Seventh Avenue for the southern end of the plaza and the entrances to the 42nd Street subway complex.
  • West 47th Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue for the red steps and the TKTS booth at Broadway and 47th Street.
  • West 50th to 53rd Streets for the northern end of the plaza, a quieter approach with easy access to the theatres on the west side.
  • Eighth Avenue side streets for evening pickups, when the avenue is easier to work with than the center.

Your chauffeur chooses the exact corner on the day, because lane closures, deliveries and events change the picture hour by hour.

What to see, and what is worth skipping

Times Square works best as an evening. The advertising screens are designed to be seen in the dark, and the crowd is part of the show. The sights are mostly visible from the sidewalk and the plaza steps: the screens themselves, the red steps above the TKTS booth, the former Times Tower where the New Year ball descends, and the long view down Broadway toward Columbus Circle and Herald Square.

What is not worth much of your time is the sidewalk itself in peak hours. If you only want to say you were there, 15 to 20 minutes at dusk is enough. If you want atmosphere with a purpose, pair it with a show, a dinner on Restaurant Row (West 46th Street) or a visit to a nearby attraction.

The best time to go

Early morning, before 9 a.m. The plaza is almost empty. Screens are on, light is soft and the Alliance's cleaning crews are at work. It is a good time for photographs without people, though less atmospheric.

Late afternoon into dusk. The best balance. Arrive about 45 minutes before sunset, watch the screens take over from daylight and leave before the theatre crowd peaks.

After the theatre. From about 10:30 p.m., Broadway lets out and the plaza surges. If you are leaving a performance, ask your chauffeur to wait a block away on a side street and walk to the car; the avenue directly outside is blocked with people.

New Year's Eve. The Times Square New Year's Eve event takes place on December 31, according to the Alliance. Streets around the plaza close well before midnight, and access is controlled. A car cannot approach. If you plan to attend, discuss a pickup point several blocks away and a time well after the event ends.

Times Square lies at the heart of the Congestion Relief Zone. Licensed black cars pay the MTA's per-trip charge in place of the daily toll, and the passenger bears it; the MTA's guide explains how. Fares in the booker are shown before you commit.

How long Times Square deserves

A pure sightseeing visit takes 30 to 60 minutes. Add 90 minutes for a quick dinner and three-and-a-half hours for a full Broadway evening with dinner either side. If you are combining Times Square with a deck visit, an early-evening observation slot at Top of the Rock, about 1 km (0.6 mile) east, followed by dusk in the plaza, makes a strong start to the evening. In winter the plaza is cold and windy between the towers, so plan for fifteen minutes outside and a warm stop afterward; in summer it is the reverse, and an early evening visit avoids the worst of the heat radiating from the pavement and the screens. Rain thins the crowd and doubles the reflections, which many photographers prefer, but umbrellas make the sidewalks hard to move through.

Walking route that works

The shortest and most pleasant stretch for a first visit is the southbound walk.

  1. Start at the north end near West 50th Street, where the car drops you.
  2. Walk south along the plaza on Broadway, passing the large screens and the theatres on both sides.
  3. Stop at the red steps near 47th Street, which give the best raised view of the crowd and the lights.
  4. Continue to 42nd Street and the southern gateway, where your chauffeur is waiting on a side street.

That is about 1 km (0.6 mile) on foot, 15 to 25 minutes depending on how often you stop. Doing it north to south keeps the brightest displays ahead of you as you walk.

Tickets, shows and the TKTS booth

Times Square is the doorway to the Broadway theatre district, which has its own guide: Broadway Theatre District: logistics for a chauffeured evening. The practical point here is the TKTS booth at Broadway and West 47th Street. TDF, the non-profit that runs it, sells same-day tickets at up to half price, plus matinees for the following day, and its website lists the day's shows. As of October 2026 the Times Square booth posts different opening times depending on the day of the week, so check the TKTS page before you plan around it. The booth is an honest alternative to paying a premium on a resale site.

A chauffeured evening around the plaza

  1. Late afternoon at the Empire State Building. The Empire State Building guide explains the deck choices and queue timing. It is about 1.2 km (0.75 mile) south.
  2. Early dinner in the Theatre District, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., so you are seated and finished before curtain.
  3. A walk through the plaza at dusk. Your driver drops you at 50th Street and collects you at 42nd.
  4. The show. The theatres sit on the surrounding streets, so the car is not needed again until the end.
  5. Late pickup on a side street, with your driver messaging when the car is one block away.

Staying in Times Square: hotel arrivals and luggage

Many visitors never face the curb question for the plaza itself, because their hotel stands on one of the surrounding streets. The arrival problem is then one of loading zones. Hotels in the district generally run a short front-of-house lane on a side street, shared with taxis, delivery vans and other guests, and when it is full a car has to circle the block. At peak times one lap can take ten minutes.

Two habits help. First, share your arrival time and flight details so your chauffeur can message the hotel's doorman or bell desk before the car reaches the street. Second, travel with bags that can be unloaded in a minute, since stopping is brief and the lane is policed. If your party is large, a Luxury SUV or an Executive Sprinter lets everyone and everything leave the car in one pass instead of two.

Departures work the same way in reverse. A 6 a.m. airport run from a Times Square hotel is easy, because the streets are nearly empty. A 4 p.m. departure is a different story: the cross streets fill from mid-afternoon, and the last 500 m (about a third of a mile) can take longer than the first 10 km (6 miles). Build in a margin and ask your driver to arrive ten minutes early, not on the minute.

For the plaza's rules on events and permits, the city's own plaza program page lists the Times Square Plaza entry and the guidelines that apply to signage and organized activity, which is useful reading if you are planning a brand activation, a film shoot or a group gathering. Film and brand teams with equipment to move should talk to us at booking about vehicle size and an approved loading point.

Safety and etiquette

Crowds at night are dense but generally orderly. Watch your phone and bag as you would in any large crowd. Costumed characters ask for tips when you take photographs, which you are free to decline politely. Do not hand your phone to strangers to take a photo and keep your group together by agreeing a meeting corner in advance. NYC DOT's plaza rules apply to the space, including limits on signage and permits for events, so organized group activities should be cleared with the Alliance beforehand.

The Times Square Alliance site is the official source for events, accessibility information and theatre listings.

Frequently asked questions

Can cars drive through Times Square?

Not through the plaza itself. NYC DOT lists Times Square Plaza on Broadway from West 41st to West 53rd Streets as open to the public every day. Cars use the avenues and cross streets around it.

Where should my driver drop me off in Times Square?

West 42nd Street near Seventh Avenue for the south end, West 47th Street for the red steps and TKTS booth, or West 50th to 53rd Streets for the north end. The chauffeur picks the corner on the day.

How far is Times Square from JFK?

Around 24 km (15 miles), and 45 to 90 minutes is a fair range. From LaGuardia it is about 13 km (8 miles) and 25 to 50 minutes.

When is New Year's Eve in Times Square?

The event takes place on December 31. Streets around the plaza close well before midnight, so cars cannot approach. Plan a pickup several blocks away.

How long should I spend in Times Square?

A visit for sightseeing takes 30 to 60 minutes. Allow longer if you are having dinner or seeing a show nearby.

Where do I find discounted theatre tickets near the plaza?

The TKTS booth stands at Broadway and West 47th Street, and the TDF site lists its daily opening times and the per-ticket service charge.

Is Times Square worth visiting during the day?

It is busy and less atmospheric by day. Dusk and early evening are better, when the screens are at their brightest and the crowd is still manageable.

Can my chauffeur wait nearby?

Yes. Because curb space is very limited, the driver waits on a side street a block or two away and comes to you when you message.
