How do you get to the Taj Mahal by car from Delhi?

Agra is about 204 km (127 mi) from Delhi by road according to the monument's own site, and the drive takes roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours each way on the expressway. A chauffeur-driven car stops at a designated parking area, and you finish the last stretch on a battery bus or golf cart.

The Taj Mahal private tour with driver is the classic long day out of the capital, and it works better by car than by almost any other mode, provided you plan around three facts: the monument is closed on Fridays, private vehicles cannot approach the walls, and the light changes the experience more than the clock does. Everything below is arranged around those facts. If you are building a wider India itinerary, the Delhi chauffeur service page explains how our desk handles pickups in the capital, and the Asia-Pacific directory lists the other countries we cover.

What you are actually visiting

The Taj Mahal is the white marble mausoleum that Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, standing on the south bank of the Yamuna River in Agra. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the monument is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India, with visitor information on the official Taj Mahal website. The complex is bigger than the photographs suggest: a forecourt, the great gateway, a long garden with water channels, the mausoleum on its raised platform, and two flanking red sandstone buildings, a mosque and its mirror-image.

For a visitor the practical point is scale. From the entrance hall to the mausoleum steps is a walk across open ground with no shade worth the name. Plan for the weather you would plan for at a beach, and keep the camera ready for the moment you pass through the gateway, because that is when the building appears.

Three gates, one car rule

The official site describes three gates, and which one you use shapes your morning.

  • Western Gate is the main entrance. It faces Shahjahan Garden, Agra Cantonment and the city, and it draws the largest queues.
  • Eastern Gate (Sirhi Darwaza) faces the Taj Nature Walk and Fatehabad. The official guidance is plain: prefer this gate to avoid the crowd.
  • Southern Gate is listed as closed for entry at present.

The car rule is just as clear. The monument's do's and don'ts say polluting vehicles are barred within 500 metres, that visitors should park at Shilpgram for the east gate or Amrood ka Teela for the west gate, and that battery buses or golf carts run from the parking area to the gate. So your chauffeur drops you at the parking area, not at the wall, and the vehicle waits there. Tell the chauffeur your preferred gate when you book; the east gate is the calmer choice in most seasons.

Security is airport-style. The official list of prohibited items includes drones, tripods (without permission), food, tobacco, liquor, headphones, mobile chargers and most electric goods other than cameras. Large bags and books slow the check, so leave them in the car. Photography is prohibited inside the main mausoleum, and phones should be silent.

Tickets, the Friday closure and opening hours

Visiting hours run from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, and the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. As of 2026 the official page lists the foreign-visitor entry fee at Rs. 1100, with the main mausoleum available for an additional Rs. 200. Tickets are sold online through the Archaeological Survey of India portal linked from the monument's site, which also notes a small discount for buying online. Ticket windows exist too, but online booking before the day saves you a queue.

Two practical consequences follow:

  1. Never plan the Taj for a Friday. Make Agra your Thursday or Saturday and use Friday for Delhi.
  2. Sunrise slots depend on the season. Because opening time floats with sunrise, a winter morning means a much later start than a summer one, and the road trip is timed backwards from the gate opening.

Entry rules and prices change, so confirm on the official page the week you travel. We do not add tickets to our fare; the booker prices the car, and you buy the entry separately.

Night viewing: five nights a month

The Taj can also be seen by moonlight, but only on five nights each month: the full-moon night plus two nights either side. Viewing runs from 20:00 to 23:59 in eight batches of up to 50 people, 30 minutes each, and you report at Shilpgram near the Eastern Gate half an hour before your slot for security checks. Photo ID is required. According to the official page, night viewing is closed every Friday and during the month of Ramzan, tickets are bought online, and mobile phones and video cameras are not permitted inside.

For a chauffeured plan, this changes the day. Most travelers who book night viewing do it as an overnight stay in Agra, with a daytime visit to the fort and a late dinner, rather than a same-day round trip to Delhi that would put the car back on the expressway after midnight. If your night slot is the whole purpose of the trip, tell our desk so the return is planned for the next morning.

Best season and best hour

The cool months from October to March are the comfortable ones for walking the grounds. Incredible India's own season advice for Agra points to spring (February to April) and autumn (September to November), and its monthly table shows temperatures reaching about 46 degrees Celsius in May and June. Winter has its own problem: fog on the Delhi to Agra road can delay a dawn start, so build slack into December and January trips.

On the hour: first entry gives the softest light and the thinnest crowd, while the late afternoon brings long shadows across the garden. Midday is the hardest slot for both heat and glare. If you can only choose one window, pick the first one.

Inside the complex: what is worth your time

Allow two to three hours. The sequence most visitors follow is the forecourt, the entrance hall, the long walk through the garden, the mausoleum platform, and a return along the side of the red sandstone mosque. Expect to remove or cover your footwear on the marble platform, and follow the staff instructions at the stairs.

A few specifics matter:

  • The Taj Museum inside the complex is free to enter and open 10:00 to 17:00 per the official do's and don'ts.
  • Approved guides and photographers should show identity cards. Hire a licensed guide at the gate or through your hotel; a chauffeur drives and can suggest stops, but the monument itself is best explained by a licensed guide.
  • The mausoleum interior is crowded and dim, with strict silence expected. Fifteen focused minutes there is enough.

Beyond the Taj: Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh and Fatehpur Sikri

A good Agra day does not end at the marble. The nearby sights, in order of value:

A grand railway station hall
A grand railway station hall
  • Agra Fort is the great red sandstone fort of the Mughal emperors, open from 6:00 to 18:00 according to Incredible India. It sits about 5.5 km from Agra Cantonment railway station, and from its ramparts you can see the Taj downstream.
  • Mehtab Bagh is the Mughal garden on the opposite bank of the Yamuna, facing the monument. It is best at sunset, and the official page describes the Taj as golden in the morning and evening and milky white in the afternoon.
  • Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb, nicknamed the Baby Taj, is a small, richly inlaid tomb set in a char-bagh garden.
  • Fatehpur Sikri is the abandoned Mughal capital, about 39 km from Agra and open sunrise to sunset, with the Buland Darwaza and the Jami Masjid as its highlights.

Fatehpur Sikri is the one worth adding if you are driving onward to Jaipur, because it sits on the way. Our Amber Fort guide picks up the Jaipur leg of that route.

A full-day chauffeured itinerary from Delhi

This sequence assumes a start from central or south Delhi and a return the same night.

  1. Early departure from your hotel, timed so you reach the parking area as the gate opens. Count back about four hours from opening, then add a margin in winter fog.
  2. Taj Mahal for two to three hours via the eastern or western gate, with your licensed guide.
  3. Lunch in Agra, away from the main tourist strip, while the car and driver rest.
  4. Agra Fort for about 90 minutes in the afternoon.
  5. Mehtab Bagh for the late light, if the schedule allows, or an earlier return to Delhi if it does not.
  6. Drive back to Delhi; arrival is late evening in most cases.

If this feels long, it is. Many visitors choose a one-night stay in Agra to split the journey. For Delhi sightseeing on the days around it, our Qutub Minar guide and Red Fort guide are the two best companions, and private tours with a driver explains how a driver-for-the-day booking works.

The train is the cheaper option and often the faster one for a solo traveler; take it if you travel alone and do not need flexibility. The car earns its place when you are two or more, when you want to add Fatehpur Sikri, or when you are continuing to Jaipur rather than coming back to Delhi.

Agra on the way to Jaipur or Varanasi

Agra is the middle stop in the classic northern India circuit, and a one-way chauffeur transfer to Jaipur avoids the doubling back. The official Taj Mahal site lists Jaipur at 232 km (144 mi) from Agra, so the road leg takes a comfortable half day with a stop at Fatehpur Sikri. For the other direction, Varanasi is a very long drive from Agra at around 605 km (376 mi) by the same official list, so most travelers fly; our Varanasi ghats guide explains what to do on arrival. For fleet choices, the fleet page shows the classes available; a Luxury SUV or Executive Sprinter suits groups with luggage for a multi-city leg. The booker quotes a fixed fare for the exact route and vehicle before you confirm.
