What is a private tour with a driver?

A private tour with a driver is a chauffeured day or half-day of sightseeing in your own vehicle: you choose the sights and the pace, the chauffeur handles the roads, drop-offs and waiting, and any in-depth commentary comes from a separate licensed guide if you want one. It is booked, confirmed and invoiced as one booking.

The format suits travellers who value time over a fixed route. There is no coach timetable, no stop for a souvenir shop that someone else has chosen, and no shared minibus. Your party boards at the hotel, the chauffeur drives to the first stop, waits while you visit, and moves on when you are ready.

LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com books chauffeured sightseeing in cities and regions around the world. Our 24/7 desk, plans the day with you; the driving is done by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur operator from our worldwide directory. This page explains how the format works, what to book for yourself, and how to pace a day. Each destination guide in our blog goes deeper on one attraction.

Book a driver for the day

Driver-only or driver plus licensed guide?

This is the most important decision, and the one most often misunderstood.

A chauffeur drives. Your chauffeur is a professional driver who knows the roads, the drop-off points and the waiting places, and can suggest stops and good moments to visit. A chauffeur is not a guide, and at many protected sites guiding is reserved to licensed guides.

A licensed guide explains. Licensed guides are separate professionals, trained and registered under national or local rules. At major heritage and religious sites such as the Vatican Museums, the Alhambra, Pompeii, the Acropolis or the Forbidden City, expert interpretation comes from a guide, and the site's own ticketing may offer guided options. We do not claim that a guide is compulsory at a particular site unless the site itself says so, so check the official page for your date. If you want a guide, tell the desk when you book and we will plan the day around the guide's meeting point.

The pattern that works. The chauffeur takes you between sites and handles the logistics; the guide joins you at the site, where commentary adds the most value. For a family, a guide for the main site and driver-only for the rest of the day is often ideal.

How a chauffeured sightseeing day is planned

  1. Tell the desk what you want to see. One or two anchor sights and a few optional stops are enough.
  2. We propose a sequence. Opening hours, timed entries, closing days, dress codes and traffic patterns decide the order.
  3. You book the tickets that need booking. For some sites, entry is by reserved time. Use the official site, not a reseller; for example, the Vatican Museums state that tickets.museivaticani.va is their only official online ticket site.
  4. We confirm the vehicle and the chauffeur. For a couple, a First Class Sedan; for a family, a Luxury SUV; for a group, an Executive Sprinter. Exact models are confirmed at booking.
  5. On the day. The chauffeur arrives at the agreed time, you travel, and you release the vehicle at the end. For all-day bookings the chauffeur stays with your party.

Chauffeurs can suggest stops and lunch places along the way.

Timing, tickets and closing days: what to check first

A well-planned day starts by checking constraints that no chauffeur can change.

  • Closing days. The Palace of Versailles is open every day except Monday and is closed on 25 December, 1 January and 1 May, according to its official visitor information; the Trianon estate opens at noon, and the gardens and park are open daily, weather permitting.
  • Timed entry. Many major sites sell tickets for a time slot. The Alhambra's palaces, for example, are visited at a fixed time, and the Alhambra's official site handles ticket sales and has an "Organise your visit" section covering visit times. Book as early as dates are firm.
  • Dress codes. Religious sites require covered shoulders and knees, and some require head coverings. The chauffeur will not be inside with you, so check before you leave the hotel.
  • Bag policies. Many museums restrict large bags. Ask the desk whether a locked vehicle with a chauffeur can hold your day-bags while you visit.
  • Weather and light. Gardens, viewpoints and mountain roads can change the plan; keep a flexible second option.

Sample days

These are working examples, not fixed products. Distances are approximate and drawn from published sources; the desk confirms the plan at booking.

Paris: Versailles half-day

The Palace of Versailles is about 22 to 34 km (14 to 21 miles) from central Paris, roughly 30 to 45 minutes by car depending on the starting point and traffic. The palace opens at 9.00 and closes at 18.30 in the high season (1 April to 1 November) or 17.30 in the low season, with the last admission 45 minutes before closing, according to the official site. Leaving the hotel to arrive before the crowd, spending the morning in the palace, and walking the gardens after lunch is a comfortable half-day. Parking at Versailles is paid; your chauffeur drops you near the entrance and holds a place nearby. Pair it with the Paris chauffeur service or read the Palace of Versailles guide.

Paris: Giverny full day

Giverny, home of Monet's garden, is about 80 km (50 miles) west of Paris in Normandy, according to the village's official site. Plan for roughly an hour and a half each way and a visit of two to three hours. See the Giverny and Monet's Garden guide. Combine it with the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre on another day rather than the same one.

London: Stonehenge

English Heritage says Stonehenge takes about two hours to reach by road from London, just off the A303. The trip is long, so it suits an early start, a return in the afternoon and a limited second stop. See the Stonehenge guide and the English Heritage visit page. For a shorter London day, see Windsor Castle and the Tower of London, and the London chauffeur service.

New York: Manhattan in a day

Manhattan sights sit within a few kilometres of each other, but traffic and street closures decide the order. A morning at the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge, lunch, an afternoon on the High Line and in Central Park works without long drives. In Manhattan the car is mainly for the first and last mile, and for relief when it rains. See the New York limo service.

Rome: classical highlights

The Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel and the Trevi Fountain are close together, but much of Rome's centre is a limited-traffic zone, so a car cannot drive up to the doors. The chauffeur drops you at the nearest permitted point and stays on call. For Pompeii, see the Pompeii guide and the Amalfi Coast guide, and use the Rome chauffeur service.

Choosing a destination: guides by region

Each guide below covers drop-off points, tickets and timing for one attraction. Read the guide for the sight you most want to see, then ask the desk to build the day.

North America. Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Napa Valley, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon West Skywalk, Sea to Sky Highway.

Europe. Eiffel Tower, Palace of Versailles, Stonehenge, Colosseum, Chianti wine region, Siena, Alhambra, Neuschwanstein Castle, Acropolis of Athens.

Middle East and Africa. Burj Khalifa, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Petra, Pyramids of Giza, Table Mountain.

Asia-Pacific. Mount Fuji and Hakone, Forbidden City, Great Wall at Mutianyu, Taj Mahal.

Latin America. Christ the Redeemer, Machu Picchu.

The full list lives in the attractions hub.

In compact, well-served cities such as Amsterdam or Vienna, a bus pass and a good pair of shoes beat a car for a central loop. A private driver is the better choice for day trips beyond the city, for travellers with mobility needs, for families with small children, for groups who want to stay together and for any day with heavy luggage or tight connections.

Pace: how much to fit in a day

A good rule is one anchor sight in the morning, a long lunch, and one or two lighter stops in the afternoon. Drive time between stops counts, as does queueing, security and the walk from the drop-off point. Beyond about eight hours, children and older relatives tire. If you can only see one major site, give it your best hour of the day.

Families, accessibility and etiquette

Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking; tell the desk the ages. For travellers with mobility needs, describe the requirements when you book so the desk can match the vehicle and plan accessible drop-off points; some historic sites have steep approaches that no vehicle can avoid. At religious and memorial sites, dress and behave respectfully; some require silence or restrict photography. Your chauffeur will not photograph your party or post about the day.

Vehicles and hours

A First Class Sedan (Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) carries up to 3 passengers with 2 large and 2 cabin bags. A Luxury SUV carries up to 6. An Executive Sprinter carries 12 to 14 passengers and up to 12 bags; see Sprinter van with driver. Stretch limousines, mini-coaches and coaches are available on request, as are Maybach, Rolls-Royce and Bentley, with availability confirmed at booking. In Europe and Asia expect Mercedes-Benz E-Class, S-Class and V-Class. Water and phone chargers are provided in most vehicles; we do not promise drinks on board, and local law applies to alcohol.

Tours are booked by the hour or by the day. See hourly chauffeur service and long-distance car service. Hotel concierges, travel agents and official tourist offices can book for their guests through a trade account; see hotel concierge bookings and tourist offices.

Cancellation

Cancellation is measured from the scheduled pickup time. More than 72 hours' notice: no charge. 72 hours or less: 10%. 48 hours or less: 50%. 24 hours or less or no-show: 100%. Where you have bought timed tickets, those are subject to the venue's own terms.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a private tour with a driver and a guided tour?

A private tour with a driver gives you a vehicle, a chauffeur and your own schedule. A guided tour adds a licensed guide who explains the sights. You can have both: the chauffeur drives, and a guide joins at the site. Tell the desk which you want when you book.

Can the driver also be my guide?

A chauffeur can suggest stops and tell you what they know of the area, but a chauffeur is not a licensed guide, and in many places a driver may not lead a guided visit of a protected site. If you want interpretation, add a licensed guide.

How far ahead should I book a day trip with a private driver?

As soon as your dates are firm, and before you buy timed tickets if possible, since the chauffeur's schedule and the opening hours both shape the day. For peak seasons and major sites, earlier is better.

Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

For many major sites, yes. Use the official ticket page for each site. For example, the Vatican Museums name tickets.museivaticani.va as their only official online ticket site, and the Palace of Versailles is closed on Mondays. The desk will tell you what to check for your day.

How long can a private tour with a driver last?

From a few hours to a full day or several days. Driver-hours rules in many countries limit continuous driving, so for very long days tell the desk the full timetable so that the operator can plan relief.

Is it better to take a private driver or a coach tour?

For one traveller on a budget who wants a guide and a fixed itinerary, a coach tour is the lower-cost option. A private driver is better for groups, families, day trips beyond city limits, travellers with mobility needs or anyone who wants to set the pace.

Can you arrange a day trip from a cruise port?

Yes. We can meet you at the port and return you to the ship in time for departure. Tell the desk the ship's all-aboard time and we will plan back from it. See cruise transfers.

Can official tourist offices book private tours for their visitors?

Official tourist offices, tourism boards, convention and visitor bureaus and visitor centres can book chauffeur services for their visitors with LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com through a trade account.
