The surprise for most travelers planning a Neuschwanstein Castle private tour with a driver is that the car's job ends below the castle, not at it. Private cars cannot drive to the castles at all. They stop in Hohenschwangau, and everything after that is on foot, by shuttle bus or by horse-drawn carriage.

That is no reason to skip the car. It is the reason to plan it carefully, because the day is built around a timed ticket, a long drive each way and a steep hill.

Book a driver for the day

What is Neuschwanstein, and how long does the visit actually last?

Neuschwanstein is the Bavarian castle King Ludwig II began building in September 1869. It was never finished: Ludwig died in 1886 and the castle opened to the public that August. Entry is by guided tour only, lasting about 30 minutes.

The Bavarian palace administration records that the Gateway Building was finished in 1873, the king's rooms in the Palas were ready in 1884 and the Bower was completed in 1891, while the keep and chapel were never built. Tours run in German and English, and audio guides are available in 19 languages.

The interior visit is short. The day around it is long: the drive from Munich is roughly two hours, the queue and tour take around an hour, and the walk to and from the castle adds more. Allow the whole day, from late morning to evening.

What does the car do at Hohenschwangau, and where does it park?

According to the official Hohenschwangau visitor page, private cars cannot drive to the castles. Visitors park in one of four lots (P1 to P4) in Hohenschwangau. As of 2026 the page lists €12 for up to 6 hours plus €1 for each additional hour, with a maximum of €16 per day.

A chauffeur typically:

  1. Drops you at the parking area in Hohenschwangau. The ticket center's page says the street in front of it is a no-stopping zone and tells visitors to park only in P1 to P4, so the chauffeur does not stop at the door.
  2. Parks in one of the official lots, or waits nearby, for the length of your visit.
  3. Collects you at the same point after the tour. Message the chauffeur once you are heading back down.

The booker shows the fixed fare for the transfer and the waiting time before you confirm.

How do you get from Hohenschwangau up to the castle?

There are three ways, and the official page describes each.

  • On foot: the page states the castle can be reached within 30 to 40 minutes. The trail is considerably steeper than the one to Hohenschwangau Castle.
  • Shuttle bus: it runs about every 20 minutes with no fixed timetable, and the ride from the parking area to the viewpoint known as "Jugend" takes about 15 minutes. In summer the first uphill trip leaves at 8:00 a.m. and the last at 5:30 p.m. The bus does not run on 24, 25 or 31 December or 1 January. From the Jugend stop the walk down to the castle is very steep, and the page advises against it for wheelchair users.
  • Horse-drawn carriage: departures about every 30 minutes in season, taking about 20 minutes to reach Neuschwanstein. Seats cannot be reserved, and you pay the driver.

If you want the famous view of the castle from the Marienbrücke, note that access to the bridge is sometimes closed in winter because of ice and snow. The official site asks visitors to check its "Current information" section for the daily status.

Neuschwanstein tickets: what to book and when

Everything turns on the ticket. Per the official sources:

  • Online first. Tickets are sold online at hohenschwangau.de. The Bavarian palace administration lists a 2026 regular price of €21 and a reduced price of €20, with a €2.50 booking fee online, and children under 18 free of charge. Hohenschwangau's own page says children and toddlers also need their own tickets.
  • Same day, limited. Remaining tickets are sold at the Ticket Center Hohenschwangau, only for the same day, with no reservations. Sales start at 8:00 a.m. and usually sell out by late morning.
  • No refunds or exchanges on online tickets, according to the page, so book only when the plan is firm.
  • Guided tour only. A visit is only possible as part of a guided tour, and each tour is timed. Arrive well before your time.
  • Rules inside. Large bags, prams and child carriers are not allowed in the castle. Private photography or filming inside is not allowed, though exterior photos for private use are fine. Drones are prohibited.

Read the official Neuschwanstein visitor page and the Hohenschwangau getting-there page before booking.

The timing rule: arrive long before your slot

The ticket center advises reaching Hohenschwangau village 1.5 to 2 hours before a Neuschwanstein entry time, and about an hour before a Hohenschwangau Castle entry time. The reason is the uphill transfer. Add a walk from the car park to the carriage or bus, a wait for the next departure, and the final approach from the stop, and the margin disappears fast. A late arrival can mean a lost slot, and online tickets are not refundable.

For a chauffeured day this reverses the usual instinct. The drive should be planned from the ticket time backwards: slot time, minus about two hours for the uphill leg and buffer, minus about two hours for the drive, minus the Munich pickup margin. A 12:00 slot therefore means leaving Munich at about 8:00, not 10:00.

The rest of the valley: Hohenschwangau Castle, the museum and the lake

Neuschwanstein is not the only stop. The official site describes Hohenschwangau Castle as the place where Ludwig II spent his early life, with guided tours booked through the same ticket center. The Museum of the Bavarian Kings is not time-bound, so you can enter at your own pace, and the site lists free audio guides in 10 languages. The museum is closed from 9 to 11 November 2026.

The valley also has the Alpsee lake, with a circular trail, the viewpoint "Jugend," the Marienbrücke and the Pöllat gorge hiking trail. The lakeside swimming area closes on 19 October 2026 for the season, which matters only if you are visiting in summer. For most autumn and winter visitors, the sequence that works is the Neuschwanstein tour first, then lunch, then either the museum or a short lakeside walk while the car waits in the lot.

Check the Hohenschwangau site the week you travel, since its banners carry the day's status for the shuttle, the carriages, the bridge and the road.

Opening hours, winter schedule and closed days

Neuschwanstein's hours change with the season, and the switch happens this week. In 2026, per the Hohenschwangau opening-times page:

  • 28 March to 15 October: guided tours daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • From 16 October: guided tours daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Ticket Center: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in summer and 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in winter.
  • Closed days: 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.
  • Nearby: the Museum of the Bavarian Kings is listed as closed from 9 to 11 November 2026 for renovation work.

Winter days are short, so the last tour is early afternoon in practice, and the drive from Munich should leave in the morning, not after lunch. The opening-times page is the one to check before you travel.

How far is Neuschwanstein from Munich, and what about the road closure?

From central Munich, Hohenschwangau is roughly 120 km (75 miles), and the usual drive is 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, with the Autobahn and Romantic Road routes both used depending on traffic. From Munich Airport the official Hohenschwangau page gives about 155 km (96 miles), which is generally just over 2 hours by car. Memmingen Airport is about 75 km (47 miles) away, roughly an hour, and Füssen railway station is about 5 km (3 miles), around 8 minutes.

There is a catch for the rest of 2026. The Hohenschwangau site states that renovation work fully closes the B 17 through-road in Schwangau to all traffic from 15 September 2026 to about 18 December 2026, with signed detours through Hohenschwangau, so you should allow significantly more travel time. The castles remain reachable from every direction.

For Munich itself, the Munich chauffeur service page covers the city end. Munich is also a low-emission zone inside the Mittlerer Ring where the city requires a green sticker, including on foreign vehicles; see the City of Munich page.

A chauffeured day: Munich to Neuschwanstein and back

For a winter or shoulder-season visit:

  1. 7:30 Pickup in Munich. Expect about two hours' drive, more with the detours.
  2. 9:45 to 10:15 Arrive at Hohenschwangau and park in P1 to P4. Collect any same-day tickets or check in for your timed slot, which should fall some one and a half to two hours later.
  3. 10:30 to 12:30 Carriage or shuttle up, or walk if the group is fit, with the 30-minute tour at about noon.
  4. 13:00 to 14:00 Lunch in the village.
  5. 14:00 Optional museum or time by the lake, or start the drive back.
  6. 14:30 to 15:00 Depart for Munich, arriving around dusk.

In summer, the slots stretch to 6 pm, and the same plan can start later. For other Bavarian combinations, see the Marienplatz guide for the Munich city centre, the Oktoberfest guide for the autumn festival, and our private tour with driver page for multi-day routings.

Who should skip the climb?

Neuschwanstein is physically demanding. The walk is steep, the final approach is a very steep descent from the bus stop, and the castle has stairs. Wheelchair users are warned against the bus route and the steep descent on the official page. If part of your group cannot manage it, the carriage and a plan to meet below the castle are the realistic compromise, and the other half can see the exterior from the lower paths. Tell the desk at booking so the day is built around the slowest walker.

If you are traveling alone and tickets are secured, the train and bus work well and cost the least. A chauffeur earns its place when the group is larger than two, includes children or older travelers, or wants to leave at its own time and add a stop. For a day like this, the booker prices the trip as a fixed fare before you commit.

Vehicle and group size for the castle day

Because the day is long and the final approach is on foot, comfort in the car matters more than usual. Three passengers with luggage ride well in a First Class Sedan; a family of up to six fits a Luxury SUV, and a Sprinter suits a larger party that wants to arrive together. The fleet page lists the classes, with exact models confirmed at booking. Browse the wider network through the Europe directory and the attractions hub. A trade account lets tourist offices book chauffeur services for their visitors with LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com; the Europe tourist office page explains it.
