Choose your ticket slot first and everything else follows. Top of the Rock, the observation deck on the upper floors of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, sells admission by timed entry, and the time you pick sets the quality of the light, the length of the wait and the hour the car needs to be at the curb. Pick a sunset slot and you are competing with every other visitor who had the same idea. Pick the first morning slot and you may have the deck almost to yourself.

A Top of the Rock private tour with driver is therefore a scheduling job. The chauffeur does not queue for you, but the chauffeur does choose the approach, time the drop and keep the evening around the deck running to plan.

Where is the entrance, and where does the car stop?

Visitors enter on 50th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, not through the main lobby of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. A chauffeur drops you on 50th Street or the avenue, ahead of your timed slot, and collects you from a quieter side street. From Times Square it is about 1 km (0.6 mile), 8 to 20 minutes by car.

The entrance matters because the building's main doors are for office workers and are controlled. Guests who walk into the wrong lobby are sent back outside, which wastes the minutes you saved by arriving early. Your driver will point you to the right door. Everyone is screened before the elevators, and ticket validation happens at the box office on arrival.

Streets around Rockefeller Center are among the most crowded in Midtown, especially from mid-November to early January, when visitors arrive for the tree and the ice rink. A first-rate chauffeur will drop you a block or two away in that period and have you walk the last stretch, rather than sit in a standing lane that is not moving.

The three levels

Top of the Rock has three viewing floors, each with a different experience.

A person photographs the breathtaking New York City skyline from a rooftop with iconic skyscrapers
A person photographs the breathtaking New York City skyline from a rooftop with iconic skyscrapers
  • The 67th floor is largely enclosed. It holds a gift shop and long windows with views north to Central Park and south toward Midtown. It is the warmest level in winter.
  • The 69th floor is open-air, with tall glass panels at the edge for safety. It gives a 360-degree view without the exposure of the top.
  • The 70th floor is the highest outdoor deck, with open views. This is the best floor for the unobstructed image of the Empire State Building and the length of Central Park.

Different third-party sources describe add-ons such as priority elevator access and higher-level experiences. Whether they are offered, and at what price, is set by the operator. Check the official Rockefeller Center page for Top of the Rock for what is available on your date, and do not rely on a summary elsewhere.

Hours and last-entry times vary by season. A late-evening closing is typical, but confirm on the official site. Book ahead; timed slots at sunset fill first.

Which slot should you choose?

Opening slot. The deck is quietest, the sky is usually clearest and the light on the skyline is flat but clean. This is the best choice for photographers who want space.

Midday. Usually the weakest option: hard light, haze in summer and the largest school and tour crowds. Use it only if the schedule demands.

Sunset. The deck's signature slot. Aim for an entry 45 to 60 minutes before sunset so you are on the top level as the light turns. Sunset time moves by several hours across the year, so check the date rather than assuming. Expect the largest crowd of the day.

After dark. The city lights are the attraction. The view of the Empire State Building lit against the dark sky is one of the best in New York, and the crowd thins after the sunset wave. In winter, wear more than you think you need.

Whichever you choose, arrive at the entrance early. One planning guide suggests a 45-minute buffer before your slot, and that is sensible in peak periods when the security line is long. Your chauffeur can drop you 30 to 45 minutes ahead and handle the remainder of the evening's transfers.

Our LaGuardia, JFK and Newark Liberty pages explain terminal pickup. For private flights, see the Teterboro private aviation page.

Rockefeller Center is inside the Congestion Relief Zone. For trips to, from or within the zone, the MTA applies a per-trip charge to licensed black cars, paid by the passenger, and its about page sets out the details. The booker displays the fare for your pickup and drop-off before you confirm.

Rockefeller Center in the holiday season

From mid-November, Rockefeller Center becomes one of the most visited places in the city. The Christmas tree is usually lit in late November or early December, the ice rink opens for the season and the plaza fills with visitors. Crowds peak on weekends and the week before Christmas. If your visit falls in these weeks, assume that every approach is slower, that a drop-off two blocks away is the sensible default and that a deck visit at sunset requires an even earlier arrival.

The upside is atmosphere. The decorated avenues, the tree and the lit stores of Fifth Avenue are best seen on foot in the evening. A good plan is to go up to the deck early in the evening and walk the avenue afterward, with the car waiting on a side street.

Time on the deck and around it

Plan for 60 to 90 minutes inside, covering the elevators, the three levels and time for photographs. Add 20 to 30 minutes for security and queueing at busy times. If you are combining the visit with a meal or a show, treat it as a two-hour block.

Wheelchair users should find the deck accessible: elevators are reported to serve every level, with restrooms on the 67th floor. Confirm on the official site, and tell us at booking if you want a closer drop-off.

If low cloud or rain is forecast, ask whether the slot is worth keeping. A low cloud base can hide the skyline from the upper levels, and the enclosed 67th floor is the only comfortable place to wait out a shower. Read the operator's terms before you rely on changing a slot, check the forecast on the morning of the visit and tell the desk early if your plans move, so that the car can follow them.

Rockefeller Center beyond the deck

The tower you ride up is only one building in a complex of Art Deco office blocks, plazas and theatres built around the 1930s. It is worth ten minutes on the ground before or after the deck. The Channel Gardens, the promenade that leads from Fifth Avenue toward the sunken plaza, is lined with planting beds in every season. At the lower end sits the gilded Prometheus statue, which looks over the rink in winter and the café tables in warmer months. Radio City Music Hall stands a few blocks west on the Avenue of the Americas, and its marquee is a classic evening photograph if you are not seeing a show.

Fifth Avenue itself runs right past the complex, with St. Patrick's Cathedral directly across the street from Rockefeller Center and the department stores and flagship boutiques within a few blocks. A short loop on foot from the Channel Gardens to the cathedral steps and back is about 600 m (0.4 mile) and gives you more architecture than a taxi ride could.

Hosting guests and clients

Many of our bookings here are corporate: a client who is in town for one night, a delegation between meetings or a family office that wants a short, impressive outing. The deck works well for that purpose because the visit is brief, the view is easy to talk about and the whole evening can be timed to the minute. A chauffeur can collect the guests from a hotel or an airport, deliver them to the 50th Street entrance in time for the slot and take the party on to dinner.

First Class sedan, rear door

For groups, an Executive Sprinter seats 12 to 14 and keeps a delegation together, while two First Class Sedans or Luxury SUVs suit executives who prefer separate cars. Vehicles and exact models are confirmed at booking, and Maybach, Rolls-Royce and Bentley are available on request, subject to confirmation.

We do not provide security officers. If a principal travels with a protection team, our drivers coordinate routes and arrival points with the team's lead and wait where the team directs. Alias bookings, name-board arrivals under an alternate name and signed confidentiality agreements are available on request. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing can be set up in advance through our contact page, and the fleet page shows the vehicle classes.

A chauffeured evening around Rockefeller Center

  1. Late afternoon: a visit to the Museum of Modern Art, about 0.5 km (0.3 mile) away on West 53rd Street, if you want culture before the view.
  2. Deck at sunset, entering 45 to 60 minutes before the sun goes down.
  3. A walk down Fifth Avenue or through the Rockefeller Center plaza after dark.
  4. Dinner or a show. The Broadway Theatre District guide explains curtain times and pre-theatre logistics, and the Times Square guide explains the plaza.
  5. A second view the next day. The Empire State Building is 2 km (1.2 miles) south and is the building you see from the top.

To keep one car for the whole evening, ask about a private tour with driver, and see the New York chauffeur service page for the rest of what we arrange in the city.

Security, bags and etiquette

Everyone passes a security checkpoint before the elevators. Food, drink and tripods are generally not allowed on the deck, so check the operator's current list. Leave large bags in the car or at your hotel, where your chauffeur can hold them. Keep phones secure on the open levels.

Wind on the top deck is strong and cold in autumn and winter. Carry a layer, wear shoes with grip and keep hats and scarves secure. Give other visitors space at the corners, which are the most photographed spots. Nothing about your evening is photographed or posted by the driver, and a name board under an alias is available at arrivals.

In Midtown, walking or the subway often beats any vehicle for short trips. The chauffeur earns his fare on the long journeys on each side of the visit and in the quiet minutes at the end of the night.
