What is the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and where does it start?

The Walk of Fame is a free, open-air line of about 2,800 terrazzo-and-brass stars set into the sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard (Gower Street to La Brea Avenue, about 2.1 km / 1.3 mi) and Vine Street (Yucca Street to Sunset Boulevard, about 0.6 km / 0.4 mi). It is open at all hours.

There is no gate, no ticket and no opening time. That is the appeal, and it is also the logistical difficulty: the stars run along two public streets in the middle of one of the busiest tourist districts in North America. If you want a Hollywood Walk of Fame private tour with driver, or just the best answer to how to get to the Hollywood Walk of Fame by car, the useful questions are where the car can stop, which stretch you want to walk, and when the street is closed.

The Walk is administered by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which runs the selection process and the induction ceremonies. Honorees are recognized in categories such as motion pictures, television, recording, radio and live performance, and the stars are free to see at any time. For the history of the Walk and the schedule of ceremonies, use the official Walk of Fame website (walkoffame.com) and the Los Angeles tourism board's Discover Los Angeles page. The visitor address on the Chamber's page is 7018 Hollywood Boulevard.

Getting there by car from LAX, Burbank and downtown

Hollywood sits about 30 km (19 mi) north of Los Angeles International. The usual route is I-405 north, then either the I-10 east and US-101 north, or surface streets through the Mid-Wilshire area. Expect 35 to 50 minutes late at night or very early, and 60 to 90 minutes at the weekday peaks (roughly 7:30 to 10 am and 3:30 to 7 pm). Our Los Angeles LAX transfer page explains terminal pickups, and the Los Angeles limo service page covers city bookings.

From downtown Los Angeles, the distance is about 13 km (8 mi), 20 to 40 minutes via US-101 or Sunset Boulevard. From Burbank (BUR), you travel about 14 km (9 mi) down Barham or Cahuenga, 20 to 35 minutes. From Santa Monica, count on roughly 22 km (14 mi) and 40 to 70 minutes. The tunnels and passes that feed Hollywood are bottlenecks; the US-101 through Cahuenga Pass is the one to watch.

Every airport pickup includes flight tracking, and the driver waits 60 minutes free after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one.

Where a chauffeur can actually stop

Hollywood Boulevard itself has few places where a car can pause for more than a moment. There are bus lanes, taxi stands, driveways and short curb zones, and parking enforcement on the cross streets is active. A good drop-off plan has three parts.

  • Pick the point of entry, not "the Walk". Most visitors want the stretch near the TCL Chinese Theatre (6925 Hollywood Boulevard) and the Dolby Theatre. The easiest drop is on a cross street such as Orange Drive or Highland Avenue, a short walk from the stars.
  • Keep the pickup separate from the drop. Your driver circles or waits nearby and meets you by text when you finish. Hotels and valet entrances along the boulevard are private; a chauffeur does not wait in them.
  • Choose the quieter end if you want photographs. Vine Street is calmer than the Hollywood and Highland area, and the Capitol Records building near the Vine and Yucca end is a good landmark to meet at.

Garages in the Hollywood and Highland area and elsewhere along the boulevard are commercial, and rates and rules are posted at the entrance, so we do not quote them here. If you plan to leave luggage in the car, tell the desk at booking so the driver can stay with the vehicle instead of parking.

The Hollywood Boulevard core, block by block

The easiest orientation is east to west, because the heaviest foot traffic is clustered between Vine Street and Highland Avenue.

  1. Hollywood and Vine. Historic intersection with the Pantages Theatre close by and a Metro B Line station underneath.
  2. Between Vine and Highland. The Egyptian Theatre, the Hollywood Museum on Highland, and a long run of stars. Moderate crowds.
  3. Hollywood and Highland. The densest block: the Dolby Theatre, the TCL Chinese Theatre with its forecourt of handprints and footprints, and a shopping center with views of the Hollywood Sign from the upper courtyard. Costumed characters work this stretch; many expect tips for photographs.
  4. West of Highland to La Brea. Quieter, with fewer visitors and more local businesses. This is the end of the Walk at La Brea Avenue.

The stars themselves are small. A typical stop is a few seconds, because the interest is in finding a name you know. Plan 60 to 90 minutes for a relaxed walk along the Hollywood Boulevard section and a coffee, or two hours if you add a theatre forecourt and a museum.

Vine Street: the shorter and quieter half

Vine Street gets a fraction of the crowds and is often skipped. The stars here run for about three blocks between Yucca Street and Sunset Boulevard, and the street is lined with entertainment-industry buildings. It is a pleasant place for a morning visit, and the cars can stop more easily. For a first visit, walk the Hollywood Boulevard section first; if you have time, add Vine on the way back to the car.

Ceremonies, premieres and closure days

The Chamber holds star ceremonies throughout the year, usually around midday on weekdays, and they are open to the public. The street in front of the star is blocked by crowd barriers for an hour or so, and traffic on the nearby side streets slows. The Chamber's official site lists scheduled ceremonies, so check it before planning a visit if you hope to see one.

Larger closures matter more. Hollywood Boulevard around Highland Avenue is closed to vehicles for film premieres at the theatres and for the days before the Academy Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre, and there are parades and festivals during the year. On closure days your driver will use a detour and a drop point several blocks away. Tell the desk if you are traveling in March or if you are attending an event; confirmation texts carry the final drop-off location.

Hollywood Boulevard is an active public street with sidewalk vendors, performers and heavy pedestrian traffic. Keep valuables out of sight and let the driver handle bags; chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips.

Best time of day and how long to allow

  • Early morning (7 to 9 am). The quietest hours. Shops are closed, but the stars and the boulevard are open and the light is flat and easy.
  • Midday. The busiest period on summer weekends and school holidays, and the hottest.
  • Late afternoon to early evening. Golden light, and the theatre areas fill up around film showtimes.
  • After dark. The signs and the Dolby Theatre are lit; the street is lively and the crowds are heavier near Highland.

Allow 60 to 90 minutes if the Walk is the only stop, or add a half day if you are combining it with other Hollywood sights.

Once you are in Hollywood, Metro's B Line is the easiest way to reach the Walk: the Hollywood and Vine and Hollywood and Highland stations are on the Hollywood Boulevard route, and the official Metro site has the current map and fare information. If you are staying in Hollywood already and only want to see the stars, the Metro or a walk is the sensible choice. A chauffeur makes sense when the Walk is part of a longer day, when you have bags, or when you need a discreet exit after an evening event.

Seeing the Hollywood Sign from the car

Many visitors who come for the stars also want the sign on the hillside, and it is worth knowing what is realistic. The sign stands in Griffith Park's hills and is not open to visitors, so the goal is a good view, not a visit. The upper courtyard of the Hollywood and Highland center frames it well and is only steps from the stars. The terrace of the Griffith Observatory gives a closer, higher view, and Lake Hollywood Park, on the northern side of the hills, is another established viewpoint.

Streets in the hillside neighborhoods are narrow, residential and signed with parking restrictions. Please do not ask a driver to stop on them for a photograph; a chauffeur who knows the area will choose a legal viewpoint and keep traffic moving. If the sign is the priority, say so when you book, and the itinerary can put the Observatory or the Highland courtyard first, when the light and the haze are best.

An evening visit and a discreet exit

The stars look different after dark, with the theatre marquees lit and the sidewalks busy. Premieres and evening events are also when Hollywood Boulevard is hardest to enter by car. For an evening at the Dolby Theatre or a nearby hotel, ask the desk for a pickup point on a quieter side street and a text message when you are ready; the driver can arrive within minutes. If privacy matters, the booking can be made under an alias, and the chauffeur will not photograph you or post about the trip. We are a chauffeur service, not a security company, so if your party has its own security team, the chauffeur works alongside it.

A half-day Hollywood circuit by car

This is a realistic four-hour schedule that links several nearby sights. The distances are approximate road distances.

A car on a scenic road
A car on a scenic road
  1. 9:00 am, the Walk of Fame. Park-and-walk the Hollywood and Highland area, then Vine Street if you wish. About 90 minutes.
  2. 10:45 am, the Griffith Observatory. About 7 km (4.5 mi), 15 to 25 minutes via Franklin and Vermont Avenues. Note that the Observatory is closed on Mondays and that the car cannot wait on its grounds.
  3. 12:45 pm, lunch in Los Feliz or on Hollywood Boulevard.
  4. 2:00 pm, Universal Studios Hollywood. About 7 km (4.5 mi) over Cahuenga Pass, 15 to 30 minutes.

If you prefer shopping to theme parks, switch step 4 for Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, about 11 km (7 mi) and 20 to 35 minutes away. A longer full-day tour is described on our private tours with driver page, which lists the ways the desk can build a day. Also see the attractions hub for other guides in the region.

Accessibility and etiquette

The pavement along the Walk is level and curb-cut, though the sidewalks can be crowded. The Metro B Line stations are step-free. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles can be requested at booking. Please treat memorial stars with respect; fans leave flowers on stars that honor people who have died, and these should not be moved or trampled.
