The only airport you land at inside a national park

Most national parks make you earn the first view with a long drive. Grand Teton hands it to you through the aircraft window. Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) says on its own website that it is "located within Grand Teton National Park", and describes itself as the world's first airport certified as an International Dark Sky Place. The runway lies in the valley floor, with the Teton Range filling the western horizon, and the town of Jackson is roughly 7 miles (11 km) south of the terminal.

For a Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park private tour with driver, that geography changes the whole plan. There is no rental-car counter queue in the way, no bus timetable and no need to carry luggage up a hotel staircase before your first look at the mountains. Our desk books a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur operator, tracks your flight, and the driver meets you at the terminal. One booking, one confirmation, one invoice.

The airport's website notes that parking may be limited at peak times and lists curb pickup areas, which is a further reason to arrange a driver rather than circle for a space.

What is the best way to get from Jackson Hole Airport into Grand Teton National Park?

Experience the majestic Grand Teton Mountains and vast wilderness under a clear sky. Perfect for nature lovers and adventurers
Experience the majestic Grand Teton Mountains and vast wilderness under a clear sky. Perfect for nature lovers and adventurers

A private chauffeur is the simplest: Moose, the park's southern hub, is a short drive north of the airport, and the Teton Park Road continues to Jenny Lake and Signal Mountain. Jackson town is about 11 km (7 mi) south. A fixed-fare transfer lets you start sightseeing straight from arrivals.

The park is a long, narrow strip, so think in terms of one spine. Highway 26/89/191 runs north from Jackson through the valley, the Teton Park Road breaks off at Moose and hugs the base of the mountains, and the highway carries on to Moran Junction, Colter Bay and, farther north, the road into Yellowstone. The National Park Service says the park has four road entrances, and several of them close or have limited vehicle access from November to May.

Rough distances for planning, from Jackson town: Moose about 19 km (12 mi); Jenny Lake about 32 km (20 mi); Colter Bay about 64 km (40 mi); Yellowstone's South Entrance about 92 km (57 mi). Allow an extra margin in summer, and note that NPS has construction under way across the park in 2026, with delays expected.

Fees and passes for 2026

As of 2026, the NPS fees page for Grand Teton lists a private-vehicle entrance pass at $35 for seven days, $20 per person for those arriving on foot, bicycle or ski, and a $70 annual park pass for US citizens and residents. Visitors who are not US residents pay an additional $100 per person at age 16 and over, unless they are admitted with an annual or America the Beautiful pass (the non-resident annual is listed at $250).

Commercial groups are charged on a different schedule: sedans (1 to 6 seats) $25 plus $20 per person, vans (7 to 15 seats) $125, minibuses $200 and motor coaches $300, valid for seven days with the same passenger manifest. A chauffeured vehicle is a commercial operation, so expect that schedule to apply, and plan on the non-resident surcharge for each adult passenger where it applies. These are NPS figures, not ours, and you should confirm them on the page before travel.

One detail trips up first-time visitors: a Grand Teton pass does not cover Yellowstone. Anyone driving through Grand Teton to or from Yellowstone must pay a separate Yellowstone entrance fee, as the NPS notes. Our Yellowstone guide lays out that schedule.

Reading the valley: the five places worth a stop

Visitors who have a single day should be ruthless. These are the stops drivers recommend, in the order they work geographically:

  1. Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center at Moose. One of three visitor centers (the others are Jenny Lake and Colter Bay). Rangers here know the day's road conditions.
  2. Snake River Overlook and the oxbows. Pullouts where the river bends toward the peaks, a classic photograph.
  3. Jenny Lake. The shuttle boat and Hidden Falls trail make this the park's busiest corner; arrive early.
  4. Mormon Row and Antelope Flats. The weathered homestead barns that photographers love, on a road that closes seasonally, according to the NPS roads page.
  5. Oxbow Bend and Jackson Lake. Good for moose, elk and water birds at dawn.

Teton Park Road, the scenic route past Jenny Lake, is closed to vehicles from November 1 to April 30 between the Taggart Lake trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge, and is groomed for skiing and snowshoeing from mid-December to mid-March. Moose-Wilson Road is closed from November 1 until mid-May, depending on conditions. A driver checks the NPS road page before every departure.

A half-day chauffeured circuit from the airport

If your flight lands in the morning, this half-day works well:

A highway at night
A highway at night
  • Meet your driver at arrivals and load bags into the Luxury SUV.
  • Drive north to Moose for a stop at the visitor center (about 10 to 15 minutes).
  • Follow Teton Park Road to Jenny Lake for 90 minutes, longer if the lake trails are on your list.
  • Continue to Signal Mountain Road for a high-angle valley view, then return via the highway.
  • Finish in Jackson, about 45 to 60 minutes from the last viewpoint depending on traffic, at your hotel.

For a full day, add Mormon Row at sunrise and Oxbow Bend before breakfast. Early light matters in this valley: the east-facing peaks glow before sunrise colors fade, and wildlife is most active around dawn and dusk.

Jackson itself: antler arches, the elk refuge and how cars work in town

Jackson's Town Square is bordered by arches built from shed elk antlers, a landmark of the place. Cars park on the surrounding streets rather than inside the square, and it is easy to wander on foot between galleries, restaurants and the Western-style storefronts. The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce is at 175 East Deloney Avenue, and the National Elk Refuge and Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center is at 532 North Cache Street, according to the chamber's website. The Jackson Hole Chamber is a sensible first stop for current events and local alerts.

The elk refuge is a winter story: herds gather on the valley floor in the cold months and the refuge offers sleigh rides. That is a different season and a different type of day from summer hiking, and it is why a good driver asks when you are traveling before suggesting an itinerary.

Four seasons, four different trips

Summer (June to early September) is peak season. Roads are open, the lake boats run, and the lots at Jenny Lake fill before many hotels serve breakfast. Start before 7 a.m.

Autumn (September and October) brings golden aspens and elk rutting activity. The days are shorter, services begin closing, and the first snows can arrive on the passes.

Winter (December to March) is the ski season at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, plus snowshoeing on the closed Teton Park Road and wildlife viewing at the elk refuge. Chains or winter tires and a driver used to ice are essential. Our desk assigns operators accustomed to local winter conditions.

Spring (April and May) is mud season: some roads remain closed, lakes thaw, and it is the quietest time to visit. Check road dates carefully; Moose-Wilson Road in particular does not open until mid-May in the NPS notice.

Combining Grand Teton with Yellowstone

This is the pairing most travelers ask about. The NPS directions page describes the link from the Yellowstone side: travel south to Grant, then about 20 miles (32 km) to the south entrance of the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway. Jackson to Yellowstone's South Entrance is roughly 92 km (57 mi), 75 to 90 minutes with a viewpoint stop, and Old Faithful lies about the same distance again inside the park, so Jackson to Old Faithful and back in one day is too much. A better plan is a two-night itinerary: day one in Grand Teton, day two in Yellowstone's southern half, a night inside the park or in West Yellowstone.

If your trip is about ski-town style rather than wildlife, our guide to Aspen and Snowmass covers a very different Rocky Mountain resort, in Colorado.

Arrival logistics at the terminal

The Jackson Hole Airport is small, and that is its charm and its constraint. Flights bunch together, curb space is short at peak hours, and a driver who tracks your flight will time the approach so you are not circling. Name-board meet-and-greet inside arrivals is an add-on, and an alias on the board is available if you prefer privacy. On international arrivals the first 60 minutes of waiting after landing are free; on domestic arrivals, 30 minutes.

Luggage matters here. Ski bags, camera cases and hiking poles ride better in an SUV or Sprinter than in a sedan boot. Say what you are bringing when you book and the desk will match the vehicle.

Pace, altitude and traveling with children

The valley floor sits above 6,000 feet (1,830 m) and Jenny Lake is higher still, so the first afternoon is not the time for a punishing hike. Drink water, wear sun protection and keep the day loose enough to adjust. Families should know that child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking, and most vehicles carry water and phone chargers. Drop-off points at the visitor centers and overlooks are close to paved paths, so a driver can set down older relatives near the viewpoint and wait.

If you are staying in the town of Jackson and plan one outing, a guided group tour is the lowest cost per person. A chauffeur wins once you have bags, children or a schedule built around light.

What to bring, wear and expect

Weather changes in minutes at altitude, and the valley floor is above 6,000 feet. Layers, a windproof jacket and sunglasses are standard even in July. Bear spray is recommended in the Teton backcountry, though not needed for the roadside stops. Wildlife rules mirror Yellowstone: stay far from bears and keep a safe distance from bison, elk and moose. Your driver will not stop in the roadway and will use pullouts.

Our vehicle classes, all "or similar" and confirmed at booking, are the Executive Sedan, First Class Sedan, Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban or GMC Yukon Denali, up to 6 passengers with 5 to 6 large bags) and the Executive Sprinter for groups of 12 to 14. For ski luggage and camera gear, the SUV or Sprinter is the right call. See the fleet page.
