The usual problem with Museum Island is not how to reach it. It is deciding what to do once you have, because the island holds five major museums and one of them, the Pergamon, is closed until mid-2027. A Museum Island Berlin private tour with a driver therefore starts with a short editing exercise: which collections do you actually want, and in what order?

The chauffeur's part is simple by comparison.

What is Museum Island, and what is open now?

Museum Island is a cluster of museums on the northern tip of Berlin's Spree Island, inscribed by UNESCO in 1999. It comprises the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode-Museum and the Pergamonmuseum, with the James-Simon-Galerie as the central entrance building.

The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (the Berlin state museums) list the island's venues as the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Altes Museum, the Bode-Museum, the James-Simon-Galerie, the Neues Museum and the Pergamonmuseum, plus a Pergamonmuseum "Panorama" presentation. The ensemble was built between 1830 and 1930, and the museums are celebrating the island's 200th anniversary over several years.

The current state of play, from the museums' own site:

  • Neues Museum: the permanent Ancient Egypt exhibition includes the bust of Queen Nefertiti, and the museum also shows prehistory and early history. Special exhibitions currently listed include "Destiny in the Stars," on the beginnings of the zodiac, to 10 January 2027.
  • Bode-Museum: a portrait exhibition of Angela Merkel runs from 1 July 2026 to 3 January 2027.
  • James-Simon-Galerie: closed all day on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. On that day the Neues Museum is reachable only through its own entrance.
  • Pergamonmuseum: closed for renovation, see below.

Read the official Museum Island page for current exhibitions and any date-specific notes.

Is the Pergamon Altar open?

Not yet. The Pergamonmuseum announced that it "will reopen to the public on 4 June 2027" after years of renovation. When it does, the renovated North Wing and central building will show the Pergamon Altar, the Hellenistic Hall of the Antikensammlung and the full Museum für Islamische Kunst, including objects such as the Aleppo Room, the Mschatta Facade and the Alhambra Dome. The main holdings of the Vorderasiatisches Museum, the Near Eastern collection, stay in the South Wing, which remains closed. The museums' announcement points to a planned presentation in 2037, with an interim showcase in the meantime.

The practical advice: if the Altar is the reason for your trip, postpone the trip. If you are in Berlin in 2026 and want Egypt, sculpture and 19th-century painting, the island is very much worth visiting now. Group bookings for the reopening were expected to be available from 1 July 2026, according to the museums' announcement.

How far is Museum Island from BER, and how does the car get there?

From Berlin Brandenburg Airport the island is roughly 28 to 30 km (about 17 to 19 miles) by road, normally 35 to 50 minutes depending on the inner-city approach. From the Brandenburg Gate it is about 1.5 km (1 mile), a drive of 10 minutes or a walk of about 20 minutes along Unter den Linden. From Potsdam it is roughly 35 km (22 miles), around 45 minutes.

The island is a pedestrian-oriented historic site, and the exact kerb depends on the day. In general:

  1. The chauffeur drops you on the streets at the edge of the island, near the Lustgarten and the bridges, a few minutes' walk from the James-Simon-Galerie.
  2. The car does not wait at the entrance. It stays nearby, or in a car park, and you message at the end.
  3. On event days, such as the Festival of Lights when the neighboring cathedral hosts concerts, the plan shifts to a different approach.

Public transport references help set pickups: the museums' neighborhood is served by S-Bahn at Hackescher Markt and by buses stopping at the Lustgarten, according to a 2022 museum-night listing, so check current routes with the transit operator.

How do tickets and timed entry work?

The state museums sell tickets online, and several of their venues have required time slots in recent years. The museums' own page links to "Prices & Admission" and special opening hours for public holidays, so check them for your date. A few practical rules hold regardless:

  • Book online before you travel for the Neues Museum, where the Nefertiti bust draws the longest queues.
  • Use the James-Simon-Galerie as the central entrance, except on days it is closed, and confirm which museum you enter through.
  • Check the closed day of each museum. The state museums do not all close on the same weekday.
  • Look at the Museum Pass if you will see several state museums over a few days. Prices change, so we have not quoted them; the pass is listed on the museums' site.

Ask each venue about concessions and free admission for children, and reserve a ticket for every child where a time slot is required.

Three realistic Museum Island days

The Egypt and antiquity morning (3 hours). Neues Museum at its opening for Nefertiti and the prehistory floors, then the Altes Museum for classical antiquities, and lunch in Mitte. This is the best fit if the Pergamon's closure bothers you.

A car on a scenic road
A car on a scenic road

The sculpture and painting day (4 hours). The Bode-Museum for sculpture and its current exhibition, a break by the water, then the Alte Nationalgalerie for 19th-century painting. Quieter than the Neues Museum.

The two-hour sampler. One museum of your choice, a walk across the Lustgarten and a look at the exteriors. This suits a traveler on a tight corporate schedule between meetings.

For a first Berlin day, the sequence that works is museum slot first, then lunch, then the Reichstag dome at a registered afternoon time, then the East Side Gallery while the light is good. The same island fits a longer Germany trip: the Dresden Frauenkirche guide covers a 190 km (118 mile) day, and the private tour with a driver page covers other multi-stop days.

The best time to visit Museum Island

  • First slot on a weekday: the shortest queues and the best chance of a quiet Nefertiti room.
  • Late-opening evenings: check whether your museum keeps a late night, since it can spread the crowd.
  • Weekends and school holidays: the busiest, with shared entrances backing up.
  • Winter: a good season for indoor visits, with quieter galleries and the Lustgarten bare.
  • October: the Festival of Lights runs 9 to 18 October 2026 and lights landmarks across Berlin in the evenings, so evening traffic is heavier in the center.

Beyond the five museums: the Cathedral, the Lustgarten and the Humboldt Forum

Three neighbors turn a museum visit into a fuller day, and all sit within a few minutes' walk of the island.

Berlin Cathedral. It stands near the Lustgarten, close to Museum Island, the German Historical Museum and the Humboldt Forum. The cathedral's website sells visitor tickets online, and the visit includes the dome. It lists free short guided tours with a visitor ticket on its schedule, and daily services, vespers and devotions open to all, which can affect visiting times. In October the cathedral also hosts concerts within the Festival of Lights, running from 13 to 17 October 2026 this year, according to the festival's site. See the Berlin Cathedral site for the time of your visit.

The Lustgarten. The open park in front of the island is where most visitors orient themselves and where the chauffeur is likely to aim for a drop. It is a good place to meet the car again, since it is easy to describe and easy to find.

The Humboldt Forum. Located at Schlossplatz in the rebuilt Berlin Palace, it presents exhibitions including ethnological collections and Asian art, as well as concerts and talks. Its website describes outdoor spaces including the Schlüter Courtyard, the riverside by the Spree and a passage between the Lustgarten and Schlossplatz, and a roof terrace for which visitors are asked to book a ticket. Specific areas were closed on specific dates, such as the Palace Cellar from 5 to 16 October 2026, so verify the part you want on the Humboldt Forum site.

Common planning mistakes on Museum Island

Visitors who plan from guidebooks written before the Pergamon closed tend to make the same errors, and a chauffeur's desk sees them often.

A concert crowd under stage lights
A concert crowd under stage lights
  • Planning around the Altar. It is not on display until the reopening on 4 June 2027, so itineraries that treat it as the highlight need a new anchor.
  • Booking too many museums. Two major museums in a day is a good target; three is possible only with short stays, and four exhausts nearly everyone.
  • Arriving at the wrong entrance. Most visitors use the central entrance building, but on 20 October 2026 the Neues Museum is only reachable through its own entrance. Always read the notice for your date.
  • Setting a pickup too close to the end time. Allow 15 to 20 minutes after your last gallery for the cloakroom, the walk to the car and the shop.
  • Forgetting the Festival of Lights or other events. On busy evenings the traffic around the Lustgarten and Unter den Linden is heavier.

A rainy-day and cold-day plan

Berlin weather is changeable, and Museum Island is one of the best weather-proof stops in the city. In wet or cold conditions, the car stays close to the edge of the island with the heating on, and you pass between museums on foot only as far as necessary. A day built around two indoor visits and a long lunch in Mitte is comfortable at any time of year, and the chauffeur's role is to keep the transitions short.

Is the island accessible?

The newer entrance building was designed to bring all visitors into one foyer, and the museums publish access information per venue. Individual rooms in older buildings vary, and some older rooms have steps. Contact the museum before the visit if a guest uses a wheelchair, and tell the desk so the drop-off is planned for the shortest and flattest route from the nearest open kerb.

How do the options compare?

For a traveler with one bag and time to spare, public transport is the lowest-cost way in, and the island is a short walk from the stations. A chauffeur earns its fare when luggage, a group or a tight timetable is involved. The booker shows the fixed fare before you confirm.

Zone rules, vehicle classes and trade accounts

Per the city, only vehicles with a green sticker may enter central Berlin's low-emission zone, and foreign-registered vehicles need one too; the visitBerlin page explains. Museum days involve cloakrooms and bag restrictions, so travel light and keep the rest in the vehicle: a First Class Sedan for up to three passengers, a Luxury SUV for up to six, a Sprinter for a study group or delegation. See the fleet page; exact models are confirmed at booking. For wider routing, use the Europe directory and the attractions hub. Travel agents, DMCs and tourist offices can set up a trade account with LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com to book chauffeur services for their visitors; see the Europe tourist office page.
