Newport's Gilded Age houses are run by the Preservation Society of Newport County, and in autumn the roster changes week by week. On October 16, 2026, the Society's site showed The Breakers, Marble House and Rosecliff open, The Elms and Chateau-sur-Mer closed until their November reopenings, and half a dozen other properties shut for the season. That is the first thing a newport mansions private tour with driver has to get right: not where the road goes, but which houses will be open on your date. This guide explains how to get to the Newport Mansions by car, where the chauffeur can stop and how to build a day around them with LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com.
How do you get to the Newport Mansions by car?
Newport is on Aquidneck Island, Rhode Island, about 55 km (35 mi) from Providence and 120 km (75 mi) from Boston. The Breakers is at 44 Ochre Point Avenue. Drive in over the Newport Pell Bridge from Jamestown, or over the Sakonnet River Bridge from Route 24, then follow Bellevue Avenue to the houses.
The Preservation Society's headquarters are at 424 Bellevue Avenue, and most of the great houses sit along or just off Bellevue Avenue and Ochre Point Avenue within a few kilometers of each other. The Society lists free onsite parking at all properties except Hunter House and the Breakers Stable and Carriage House, where street parking is available. That is good news for drivers, and for a chauffeur it means the vehicle can wait in a lot at The Breakers or Marble House rather than circling.
From Providence the drive is typically 45 to 60 minutes, mostly on Route 24 and the island's main roads. From Boston it is 1.5 to 2.25 hours, depending on I-93, Route 24 and the bridges. From New York it is about 300 km (185 mi), typically 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
Which houses are open, as of mid-October 2026
According to the Newport Mansions site, the situation on October 16 was:

- The Breakers: open 9 am to 5 pm, last admission at 4 pm.
- Marble House: open 9 am to 5 pm, last admission at 4 pm.
- Rosecliff: open 9 am to 4 pm, last admission at 3 pm, daily from June 26 through November 1, hosting the Revolution Reimagined exhibition.
- The Elms: closed, reopening November 16 with a multi-sensory experience that requires a special timed ticket.
- Chateau-sur-Mer: temporarily closed, reopening November 21 and then open Saturdays and Sundays through January 3.
- Chepstow, Green Animals Topiary Garden, Hunter House, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote and the Breakers Stable and Carriage House: closed for the season.
The practical lesson: a visit after November 1 should be planned around The Breakers and Marble House, with The Elms and Chateau-sur-Mer as additions once they reopen. Tickets are sold at newportmansions.org/tickets, members do not need tickets for general admission, and the site recommends buying ahead for some events.
The Breakers, in detail
The Breakers is at 44 Ochre Point Avenue. Built in 1895 for Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt II and designed by Richard Morris Hunt, it passed to the Preservation Society in 1972, according to the Society's Breakers page. The page calls it a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial pre-eminence in the Gilded Age.
For visitors, the page lists several ways to see the house: a free self-guided audio tour through the Newport Mansions app, for which you must bring your own device and earbuds and download the app beforehand, plus a kids' tour and guide-led programs. Guide-led options include Beneath The Breakers (daily at 10 am and 12 pm) and Third Floor Preservation in Progress (daily at 12 pm and 2 pm), with times subject to change. The house is described as partially accessible with an elevator in service.
One caveat for the current season: the back and south terraces are closed for restoration until November 2026, though the gardens and back lawn remain open. If the terrace and the ocean view are your reason to come, check the page before you commit.
Bellevue Avenue, Ochre Point and the realities of the curb
The houses were built as summer cottages for people who arrived by carriage, and the streets show it: narrow, tree-lined and busy in season. Bellevue Avenue is the spine, and traffic on it slows at weekends and in July and August, when day trippers, wedding parties and tour vehicles all converge.
Three practical points. First, because the Society provides parking at most properties, a chauffeur does not need to find a curb; the car enters the lot, you walk to the door and the driver waits or returns for you. Second, the Breakers' main gates are on Ochre Point Avenue, and on holiday evenings those gates are the entrance for the special-ticket event. Third, in a group of more than a few vehicles, ask the desk to stagger arrivals; narrow gates and small lots do not take a convoy.
Newport mansions private tour with driver: a full day
A driver booked for the day suits Newport because the houses are close together and the day includes a walk. This is a plan for a weekday in October.

- 9:00 am, Marble House. Open from 9, quieter than The Breakers at the start of the day.
- 10:30 am, The Breakers. A short drive of a few minutes. Take the guide-led tour at 10 or 12 if you want depth, or the audio tour if you prefer to move at your own pace.
- 12:30 pm, lunch. Newport's downtown and harbor are roughly 3 km (1.9 mi) away, 10 to 20 minutes by car, and a better place to eat than the mansion strip.
- 2:00 pm, Rosecliff, if open on your date. Last admission is 3 pm in the current schedule, so it is an early-afternoon stop at the latest.
- 3:30 pm, Cliff Walk. See the next section for what is open.

If you only have time for one or two houses
The Breakers is the obvious first choice: it is the Vanderbilt house, it has the widest range of tours and it has its own parking and audio guide. Marble House is the natural second, and open on the same hours. Rosecliff is worth adding while its Revolution Reimagined exhibition runs through November 1, though its last admission is earlier in the day. If your party has strong views, choose by what each person wants rather than by name: architecture and scale at The Breakers, a quieter visit at Marble House, an exhibition at Rosecliff.
As a planning rule of thumb, allow about two hours per house with a guide-led tour and about 90 minutes with the audio guide, plus the walk from the car. Three houses in a day is possible; four is tiring and the last one will not get the attention it deserves.
Weather, light and the seasons
Newport sits on the ocean, and the wind on Ochre Point is real even in a sunny week. Dress for the walk between the car and the front door, and carry a light layer in the shoulder seasons. Summer weekends are busy, and the road and the lots follow; spring and autumn weekdays are quieter and give the best chance of a calm visit. In winter the days are short, so a morning start matters, and the holiday events shift the whole schedule toward evening. The dates and hours quoted here describe October 2026, so check the Society's site for your own date.
The Cliff Walk: check it before you plan it
The Cliff Walk is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) one way along the shoreline between the mansions and the sea, from Easton's Beach in the north to Reject's Beach in the south. It is public and free, and it is the best way to see the back of the houses.

It is also not fully open. A report dated October 13, 2026 says the section near Salve Regina University has been fenced off since a collapse in March 2022, and that the city is meeting with the Coastal Resources Management Council to discuss repairs. A separate section south of that has also been closed in the past because of a sinkhole. No official 2026 list of open and closed sections turned up, so check the City of Newport's website or social media on the day. For a chauffeured walk, the safest approach is to enter at one of the open access points and ask the driver to collect you at a different one.
From Providence, Boston, New York and the airports
T.F. Green Airport in Warwick, serving Providence, is the closest commercial airport at about 45 km (28 mi), roughly 40 to 60 minutes. Boston Logan is about 120 km (75 mi) away, 1.5 to 2.25 hours, and is the airport page in our series for this trip. From New York the drive is about 300 km (185 mi).
Airport pickups include flight tracking, and the free wait is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one. Greeters with a name board inside arrivals are an optional add-on. For a long day trip from Boston, the Aquidneck Island roads are the variable: the Newport Pell Bridge and the Sakonnet River Bridge both feed a small number of roads, and a wedding, a regatta or a festival weekend can lengthen the last 10 km.
Bus, rental or chauffeur: reaching Aquidneck Island
| Mode | Providence to Newport | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rhode Island Public Transit bus to Newport | 1 to 1.5 hours from Providence | Lowest | Independent travelers with time |
| Rental car | 45 to 60 minutes from Providence | Fuel and any bridge toll; parking at the houses is free | Self-drivers |
| Metered taxi | 45 to 60 minutes from Providence | Metered, long fare | Rarely practical |
| Rideshare | 45 to 70 minutes from Providence | Surge-priced; return trips can be scarce | One-way trips |
| Private chauffeur | 45 to 60 minutes from Providence; 1.5 to 2.25 hours from Boston | Fixed fare via the booker | Day trips, groups, wedding parties, luggage |
If you are staying in Newport and the houses are your only destination, a short ride or a rental bicycle covers the distance. A chauffeur is better for a day trip from Boston or Providence, for a group, for a wedding party moving between a venue and a house and for any itinerary with more than two stops.
The holiday season and the house calendar
The Preservation Society builds its autumn calendar around the houses that reopen in November. The Elms reopens on November 16, and the Newport Symposium, titled What Makes It American, runs on November 5 and 6. Newport County Days, free for county residents, fall on November 14 and 15. Sparkling Lights at The Breakers is a holiday event that requires its own timed ticket for a specific date and entry time, with entry every half hour from 4 pm to 6 pm and the grounds closing at 8 pm. Regular Breakers tickets are not accepted after 3 pm on Sparkling Lights days.
If you are planning a holiday visit, treat it as a different trip from a daytime house tour: evening arrival, a booked entry window, cold weather and early darkness. Tell the desk the ticketed time and allow a margin for the Ochre Point Avenue gates. The destination's tourism site, Discover Newport, carries a visitor guide, parking information and a calendar of seasonal events.
