Is a private transfer from Mexico City airport worth it compared with an authorized taxi?
For most business and family arrivals, yes. The airport is only about 15 km (9 miles) from Polanco, but traffic ranges from 25 minutes to over an hour. A pre-booked chauffeur offers a fixed fare, flight tracking and a driver waiting in the right hall. Authorized taxis are safe and fine for light travelers.
Mexico City International Airport, formally Benito Juárez, is unusual among the great airports of the world in sitting inside the urban fabric, not on its edge. The runways are bordered by neighborhoods, and the roads from the terminals feed straight into the busy ring roads. The city is at about 2,240 m above sea level, so first-time visitors often feel the altitude on the first evening, which is one more reason to arrive into a calm car and not a negotiation.
LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com books Mexico City airport transfers through its 24/7 desk. Each ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur operator from our worldwide directory, and booked, confirmed and invoiced by our desk: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice and one point of contact at any hour.
Two terminals and the arrival halls: where each flight lands
Mexico City has Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and the airport's passenger FAQ sorts international arrivals into named halls by the origin of the flight. In Terminal 1, Hall E1 receives flights from Central America, South America and the Caribbean, Hall E2 receives Europe, Asia and Africa, and Hall E3 receives the United States, Canada and the rest of the world. In Terminal 2, Hall P receives Central America, South America and the Caribbean, and Hall N receives the United States, Europe, Asia and Canada. Domestic arrivals use Halls A and A1 in Terminal 1 and Hall Q in Terminal 2.

This is a more precise system than most airports offer, and it is exactly the sort of detail that makes a meeting go smoothly or badly. If your driver is standing in Hall E2 and you walk out of Hall E3, you will lose each other. When you book, give us the airline and flight number, and the desk confirms the terminal and arrival hall on your confirmation and again on the day.
A free automated train, the Aerotrén, links the two terminals from 05:00 to 23:00 and requires a boarding pass, according to the airport. Terminal-to-terminal moves are rare for a chauffeured trip, but if your party is split across the terminals, tell us.
How the pre-arranged pickup works: the curb rule you need to know
The airport states plainly that private vehicles may stop on the exterior road only to drop off or pick up passengers, and that anyone who wants to wait longer must use the domestic or international car park. A chauffeur car therefore cannot idle outside the doors.
That rule shapes the way we work. Your driver meets you inside the arrival hall, usually with a name board in the add-on service, helps with bags, and walks to the vehicle that is positioned at the right moment. With the name-board option, the board shows your name or an alias for privacy. See the meet-and-greet service page. The exact meeting arrangement is stated on your confirmation, and your driver tracks the flight so the car is ready when you emerge.
The airport also notes that passengers typically come out 20 to 50 minutes after landing on domestic flights and 30 to 60 minutes after landing on international flights. Our 60-minute free waiting period after an international landing is designed to sit around that. If you are held longer by immigration or a customs inspection, tell the greeter or the desk.
Official taxis, touts and why they matter at MEX
The city government's own visitor guidance is blunt: ignore anyone offering transport inside the arrival halls and use only official taxis, buying the ticket at the marked counters. The airport lists a set of authorized taxi companies, and ticket modules sit in the arrival areas: in Terminal 1, Halls E2 and E3 and Door 10 for international arrivals, and in Terminal 2, Hall E and Door 4.
We mention it because the way to avoid trouble is to have a plan before landing. Either buy a ticket at an authorized counter, or have a pre-booked chauffeur waiting. What you should not do is accept an offer from a person who approaches you in the hall. If a message arrives from someone claiming to be your driver, check it against the confirmation from our desk.
Drive times and distances from Mexico City airport
Distances are approximate road distances. Times are for normal traffic and can double in the evening peak or in rain. Tolls and elevated-road charges are included in a fixed fare quote.

| Destination | Approx. distance | Typical drive time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Historic centre and Zócalo | about 8 to 10 km (5 to 6 mi) | 20 to 45 minutes | Pedestrian streets limit drop-off |
| Reforma, Condesa, Roma | about 12 km (7 mi) | 25 to 50 minutes | Central hotels and business |
| Chapultepec and Polanco | about 15 km (9 mi) | 25 to 60 minutes | Over an hour at rush hour |
| Santa Fe business district | about 18 to 22 km (11 to 14 mi) | 45 to 80 minutes | Crosses the city |
| Coyoacán, Frida Kahlo Museum | about 20 km (12 mi) | 40 to 70 minutes | South of the centre |
| Xochimilco | about 30 km (19 mi) | 50 to 90 minutes | Far south, weekends are busy |
| Teotihuacán | about 45 to 50 km (28 to 31 mi) | 55 to 90 minutes | Mexico-Pachuca highway |
The shorter end of each range assumes off-peak hours. Weekday evenings between roughly 17:00 and 21:00 are the slow window, and heavy rain slows everything further.
Taxi, Metrobús, bus or chauffeur: comparing the choices
The comparison favors different options for different travelers.
| Option | Typical time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metrobús Line 4 | Varies, stops along the way | Lowest | Light luggage, historic centre, Bellas Artes |
| Public airport bus | Varies by route | Low | Budget travelers with time |
| Authorized airport taxi | 25 to 70 minutes | Prepaid ticket by zone | Single travelers, one or two bags |
| Ride-hailing | 25 to 70 minutes | Surge-priced at peak | Travelers who know the local pickup rules |
| Private chauffeur | 25 to 70 minutes | Fixed fare via the booker | Groups, executives, families, late arrivals |
The authorized taxi system is orderly and a sound choice for a light traveler heading to a central hotel: you buy a ticket at a counter, you get a car, and you are on your way. The cheaper public options are better if you are alone, traveling light, and heading to a place the line serves. A chauffeur is better when you have luggage, a meeting to reach, children, or simply do not want to do any of that in an unfamiliar city after a long flight.
Entering Mexico: the tourist permit and what to check
For air arrivals, reports describe the Forma Migratoria Múltiple, or FMM, tourist permit as now largely digital and completed at the immigration desk, with the fee normally included in the airline ticket as a tourism tax. Some airports, Mexico City among them, have automated gates for eligible travelers. The rules, the fee and the eligible nationalities change, and a passport card is not valid for air travel.
Check the National Migration Institute pages on gob.mx for your own passport and keep your return ticket and hotel details handy. A number of nationalities also need a visa arranged in advance. Our job starts after you clear immigration and collect your bags, and we can tell you only that the airport describes typical exit times of 30 to 60 minutes after an international landing.
Night and early-morning arrivals
Mexico City is a city that never quite stops, but its public transit does. The Aerotrén runs to 23:00, and the late hours belong to taxis and cars. A pre-booked transfer is particularly valuable on a midnight arrival, because the driver is already assigned, the price is agreed, and the hotel is expecting you.

If you land early with a room that will not be ready until the afternoon, ask the desk about an hourly booking from the airport. A chauffeur can take you to breakfast in Roma or Condesa, to a meeting, or on a first circuit of the city. See our hourly chauffeur service page. Cancellation terms are simple: more than 72 hours' notice no charge, 72 hours or less 10%, 48 hours or less 50%, 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time.
A first day in Mexico City by private car
Mexico City rewards a driver who knows the closures and the parking. The historic centre is partly pedestrianized, so the plan matters; our guide shows where cars can stop. Chapultepec Castle sits in the large park to the west, and the Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoacán is best planned for a defined time slot. Xochimilco is a half-day trip to the southern canals.
For a full day, Teotihuacán lies about 45 to 50 km (28 to 31 miles) to the north and can be combined with a morning start from the airport or your hotel. Where a site requires or recommends a licensed guide, we say so; a chauffeur drives and can suggest stops but is not a guide. See private tours with a driver and our Mexico City chauffeur service page.
Vehicles, luggage and discretion
For one to three passengers, a First Class Sedan (Cadillac CT6/Lyriq, Mercedes-Benz S-Class or similar) or an Executive Sedan seats up to three with two large and two cabin bags. A Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon Denali or similar) seats up to six with five to six large bags and is the common choice in Mexico City, for comfort and ground clearance. An Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) seats 12 to 14 and carries 12 bags. Exact models are confirmed at booking, and Maybach, Rolls-Royce and Bentley are available on request, with availability confirmed at booking. See the fleet page.
Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking, and most vehicles carry water and phone chargers. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, NDAs are signed on request, and alias bookings are standard. We are a chauffeur service, not a security company; we work alongside your own security team and do not provide armed drivers or bodyguards.
Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing are available, and official tourist offices, tourism boards and visitor centres can book chauffeur services for their visitors with LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com through a trade account. See the tourist offices of Latin America and the Caribbean for the regional overview.
Where to read the official detail
The airport's own pages are the authority for halls, doors and taxi counters: see the passenger FAQ, the authorized taxi list and the Aerotrén page. For other airports in the region, the Latin America and Caribbean directory and the airports hub list our coverage, including Cancún and São Paulo Guarulhos.
