Nearly two kilometers of the old Turia riverbed in Valencia are lined with buildings by Santiago Calatrava, the architect from the city, and the result is one of the easiest large attractions in Spain to reach and one of the easiest to plan badly. There are five main venues, each with its own hours, and the biggest of them needs a half-day.
A city of arts and sciences private tour with a driver is therefore less about transport to a single door and more about sequencing: which venue first, where to stop for lunch, and how to move between the complex and the old town without losing an hour to taxi queues.
Is the City of Arts and Sciences worth a full day, and is a driver useful?
Yes if you take the Oceanogràfic, which needs three to four hours, and add one other venue. A driver helps with the 12 km transfer from Valencia airport, the move to and from the old town, and a family's luggage. The site itself is walkable once you are inside.
If you plan only to photograph the buildings from the outside, a taxi from the center is enough and the Umbracle garden and the water pools are open for strolling. The paid venues are where the time goes, and where a plan matters.
The venues, hours and how long to allow
The City of Arts and Sciences is a group of venues rather than a single museum. The Valencia tourism foundation's official page lists them, with approximate times to allow.

| Venue | What it is | Hours listed (high / low season) | Time to allow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oceanogràfic | Europe's largest aquarium, with about 45,000 animals from roughly 500 species and an underwater tunnel | 10:00 to 20:00 / 10:00 to 18:00 | 3 to 4 hours |
| Museu de les Ciències | Interactive science and technology museum | 10:00 to 21:00 / 10:00 to 19:00 | 1 to 2 hours |
| Hemisfèric | Digital cinema under a dome, films of about 45 minutes | 10:00 to 19:00 | About 1 hour |
| Palau de les Arts | Opera and performing arts venue, guided tours need a ticket | Varies by program | About 1 hour |
| Umbracle | Garden of more than 17,000 square meters, free to stroll | Open for walking | 30 minutes |
The Àgora, a multipurpose events building, hosts exhibitions and concerts according to its calendar. The page does not give season dates, so check the venue's website for the dates that apply to your trip. Last entry is usually an hour before closing.
Which ticket to buy
The booking site for the Oceanogràfic, Museu and Hemisfèric offers combined tickets in the standard categories: general for ages 13 to 65, child for ages 4 to 12, senior over 65 with a supporting document, and categories for people with disabilities and for large and single-parent families, which need proof. A combined ticket is valid for two or three consecutive days with one visit to each venue, which is a useful rule: it lets you split the Oceanogràfic and the Museu across two days at a relaxed pace.
Prices are not listed on the booking page used for this guide; check them on the official ticketing site for your dates.
For the Hemisfèric, you choose a time and a film when you buy. The ticket page warns that the Hemisfèric lift was out of service, and that wheelchair access to the Hemisfèric needs supporting documentation and a call in advance. Guests with limited mobility should contact the venue before booking and tell the desk so that pickup and drop-off points can be chosen carefully.
Getting there: distances and drive times
All figures are approximate.
- Valencia airport to the complex: about 12 km (7 miles), roughly 20 minutes.
- Valencia Old Town to the complex: about 3 km (2 miles), 10 to 15 minutes.
- Valencia to the Albufera lagoon and El Palmar: about 12 to 15 km (7 to 9 miles), roughly 20 minutes, the traditional home of the Valencian paella.
- Valencia to Sagunto: about 30 km (19 miles), roughly 30 minutes.
- Valencia to Alicante: about 165 km (103 miles), roughly 1 hour 45 minutes.
- Madrid to Valencia: about 350 km (217 miles), roughly 3 hours 30 minutes by road. Guests arriving at Madrid-Barajas can use the Madrid chauffeur service for the first leg, or the train.
- Barcelona to Valencia: about 350 km (217 miles), roughly 3 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes. See Barcelona-El Prat and the Barcelona chauffeur service.
Valencia's own airport is the gateway for most guests. The Europe directory lists the cities served.
Where the car drops off, and the Old Town restriction
The City of Arts and Sciences address is Avenida del Profesor López Piñero 7, as the tourism site lists it, and the complex is open ground, so a car can reach the roads that border it. The metro line 10 and several city bus lines serve it: bus lines 13, 19, 23, 24, 25, 40, 94 and 95 are listed on the official page.

The practical points:
- Drop-off. A chauffeur sets you down on the road beside the venue you visit first; ask the desk to confirm the entrance for your first ticket.
- Waiting car or return. A paid car park is available at the complex according to third-party listings, but for a long visit most guests simply agree a return time.
- Old Town. Valencia's Ciutat Vella has areas with restricted vehicle access, so if you plan to combine the complex with a morning in the historic center, the chauffeur will drop you at the edge and you will walk. Check the city's rules for the date.
- Heat and shade. There is little shade between venues. In summer, plan the Oceanogràfic first thing, when it opens at 10:00, to keep the walk between venues out of the midday sun.
Best season, day and hour
Valencia is mild for much of the year, and the outdoor character of the complex favors spring and autumn. July and August are hot, and the complex stays open later in high season, which helps for evening photography. Weekends and school holidays are crowded at the Oceanogràfic.
The best single hour for the buildings is just before sunset, when the white structures catch warm light and reflect in the pools. Fallas, the city's festival, usually runs from 15 to 19 March and fills the streets; plan transfers early in those days.
A full day with a chauffeur: sample plan
This plan assumes a family of four arriving by morning flight.
- 9:00 airport pickup. The chauffeur tracks your flight, and the car takes 20 minutes to the hotel to drop luggage.
- 10:00 Oceanogràfic at opening time. Allow up to four hours, with lunch inside.
- 14:30 the Umbracle and the pools on foot, a rest in the shade.
- 16:00 Museu de les Ciències or the Hemisfèric film, with a time chosen at booking.
- 18:30 pickup for dinner in the old town, a short hop of about 3 km (2 miles).
Second day, if you have a combined ticket valid for two days: begin with the Museu, then take a 20-minute run to the Albufera for a paella lunch and a sunset view. Visitors on a longer Spanish trip can link Valencia with the Prado Museum in Madrid or the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, each about 350 km (217 miles) away. Our private tours with driver page explains the multi-day approach.
Beyond the complex: the Turia gardens, the old town and the Albufera
The complex stands on the former riverbed, which was turned into a park after the river was diverted. The Turia Garden is a green route of about 9 km (5.6 miles) that crosses the city from west to east, and the City of Arts and Sciences sits near its eastern end. The Valencia tourism site recommends it for walking and cycling, and it is the easiest way to connect the complex with the center on a fine afternoon: about 3 km (2 miles) on a flat path.

The old town offers a different register. The Lonja de la Seda, the former silk exchange, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Central Market, the Cathedral and the El Miguelete tower are the classic stops. They are close together, so a driver is useful only to get you there and back; the rest is on foot. The Valencia tourism site lists the main sights and the tourist card options.
South of the city, L'Albufera Natural Park lies about 10 km (6 miles) away and offers boat rides and paella in El Palmar. It is the best half-day to pair with a morning at the complex, because the lagoon is quietest and most beautiful at the end of the day.
Evenings, performances and the Palau de les Arts
The Palau de les Arts is a working opera house, and its season brings a different kind of visitor to the complex: evening dress, a performance start and a return after the final curtain. If you have tickets for a performance, tell the desk the curtain time and the end time so the car is waiting when the audience leaves, when taxi queues are longest. The venue also offers guided tours of the building on a ticket, which suits a daytime visit.
The Umbracle garden hosts an open-air nightclub in summer, according to the tourism foundation's description, and the area is busy on warm nights. For that kind of evening, a fixed pickup time is the simplest way to leave.
Practical notes for families and groups
- Children. The Oceanogràfic is the family anchor, and the ticket categories begin at age 4 for children. Plan a break at lunch, and allow the youngest an hour of rest in the afternoon before the Museu or the Hemisfèric.
- Strollers and mobility. Open ground between venues is flat, but the Hemisfèric lift has been reported out of service, so check before you plan around it.
- Bags. Leave heavy luggage at the hotel or in the car if the vehicle is waiting, and carry water.
- Meals. Cafés operate within the venues. For a sit-down lunch, the old town and the Albufera offer far better choices than the complex.
- Photography. The best exterior views are from the pool edges and from the Umbracle terrace, and they need no ticket.
Ways to reach the complex compared
| Option | Time from the airport or center | Cost note | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metro line 10 or city bus | Varies; transfers likely from the airport | Lowest | Solo travelers with light bags |
| Taxi | About 20 min from the airport; 10 to 15 min from the center | Metered | Short, one-off trips |
| Rideshare | Similar | Surge-priced at peak times | Flexible short hops |
| Rental car | About 20 min from the airport | Rental plus parking | Travelers continuing along the coast |
| Private chauffeur | About 20 min from the airport | Fixed fare via the booker | Families, luggage, mobility needs, multi-stop days |
For a single traveler with a day bag, the metro is the lowest-cost route and easy. A taxi is the sensible choice for a quick hop from the center. The private car makes sense when luggage, children, a wheelchair or a second-day plan are involved.
Family travel, seats and meeting points
An aquarium day usually means a family, so start with the seats. Child, toddler and booster seats can be requested at booking, and a V-Class or a Luxury SUV gives a family of four room for strollers, bags and the souvenirs. Two or three adults without children can use an E-Class or S-Class; larger parties take a Sprinter. The fleet page describes the classes, and the exact model is confirmed at booking.
Flight tracking applies to the airport pickup, with 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing. The attractions hub links the rest of the series.
