Buy the ticket before you book the car. That is the single most useful rule for anyone planning a manuel antonio national park private tour with driver, because since May 2021 the Costa Rican conservation service, SINAC, has been the only seller of park admission, entry is sold online only, and a valid ID is required. The park is also closed on Tuesdays. A beautiful drive that ends at a locked gate is not a good day.

This guide sets out the facts in the order a visitor needs them: the ticket system, the closed day, the distance and the road, where the car can drop you, what is inside the park, and how to build a day around it. Where a figure varies by source, we say so and point you to the official site.

What is Manuel Antonio National Park and how is it run?

Manuel Antonio is a national park on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast, just south of the town of Quepos in Puntarenas province. Created in 1972 and managed by SINAC, it protects rainforest, four beaches and a headland, and is home to sloths, monkeys and more than 180 bird species.

The park covers about 1,983 hectares of land and roughly 25,634 hectares of sea. Wildlife counts in the public description run to about 109 mammal species and 184 bird species. Sloths, both the brown-throated three-toed and Hoffmann's two-toed, are present. Three of the country's four monkey species live here: the mantled howler, the Central American squirrel monkey, which is listed as endangered, and the white-faced capuchin. Dolphins are occasionally seen offshore, and migrating whales sometimes pass by.

Four beaches lie within the boundary: Manuel Antonio, Espadilla Sur, Tesoro and Playita. Manuel Antonio and Espadilla Sur have tidal pools and are suitable for snorkeling. A hike of roughly an hour from Espadilla Sur reaches the top of the Punta Catedral headland, at about 100 m. A lifeguard program operates, but rip currents occur, so swim where the signs say it is safe.

The park is also the most visited in the country. One public summary notes more than 4.3 million visits between 2012 and 2022, which explains the crowd-management rules.

Tickets, the Tuesday closure and opening hours

The system, as the public record describes it:

Stunning aerial shot of the lush coast and clear water at Manuel Antonio Beach in Costa Rica
Stunning aerial shot of the lush coast and clear water at Manuel Antonio Beach in Costa Rica
  • Closed Tuesdays. The park changed its closing day from Monday to Tuesday in 2021. It stays open on most holidays unless the holiday falls on a Tuesday.
  • Online tickets only. SINAC is the sole seller of admissions, sold online and with a valid ID. The ID you present must match the reservation.
  • Visitor limits. Published figures say the number allowed in the park at one time is capped, with different limits on weekdays and on weekends and holidays. The exact cap is set by the authorities, so check the booking site.
  • Hours. Sources disagree: some give 7:00 to 15:00 and others 7:00 to 16:00. Confirm on the SINAC system when you buy.

The Costa Rica tourism board's national parks page lists Manuel Antonio among the parks with accessible viewpoints and trails and points visitors to the SINAC reservation system for online purchase, with a support address for ticket, refund and complaint issues. The authority's own site is SINAC. We do not quote ticket prices, because the park sets and changes them.

Take the warnings about the car park seriously. Reports from visitors describe touts near the entrance and parking areas who sell tickets or guides. Buy through the official system only, and ask your driver to drop you at the entrance, not beside someone who waves you in.

Book your ticket for a date and time you can keep, and make the car booking fit it. If the park changes a rule or your plans move, tell the desk as early as you can.

How far is Manuel Antonio from San Jose and the airports?

The public record gives about 157 km (98 mi) from San Jose to the park. The road is the Pacific coast route that runs through the Orotina area and the coast highway south, and the driving time from San Jose's international airport is typically 2.5 to 3.5 hours, longer on a Friday evening, a Sunday return or a holiday weekend. From Quepos to the park entrance is about 7 km (4 mi), and the last stretch is the slow one: Route 618 climbs from the town through hotels and restaurants, and in the high season the traffic crawls.

From Jaco and other beach towns on the central coast, the drive is shorter, roughly an hour or a little more depending on the stops. From Liberia airport it is a very long day, so most itineraries break the trip.

The airports directory lists regional gateways, and an SJO pickup can be requested in the booker. In travel terms the sensible plan is to land, sleep near the airport, and drive in daylight, or to take an early flight and go straight to the coast.

Where the car stops, and who waits for whom

A park with a daily limit and online timed tickets rewards punctuality. A chauffeur drops you at the main entrance, usually with a short walk to the gate from the drop-off point, and then parks or waits in a place the driver chooses. Agree a pickup time, and a backup time, because trails and beaches are slow when crowded. Confirm with the desk whether your booking includes a waiting window or a pickup after the walk.

The park is a walking park, not a driving park. Inside, trails lead to beaches and viewpoints, and the public description says the network includes accessibility features, rest areas and viewpoints, with sections adapted for wheelchairs. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, ask the park before you buy and tell the desk about vehicle needs.

A day plan: early start, park, beach, sunset

A relaxed day from a Quepos or Manuel Antonio hotel looks like this:

A luxury hotel lobby
A luxury hotel lobby
  1. Early. Be at the gate shortly after opening. Wildlife is most active early, and the heat builds later.
  2. Trails. Walk the main route toward the beaches, stopping for sloths and monkeys. A guide helps spot animals that a visitor often walks past.
  3. Beach. Manuel Antonio or Espadilla Sur for a swim, within the lifeguard areas.
  4. Punta Catedral. An optional hour-long hike from Espadilla Sur to the headland.
  5. Lunch and a siesta. Outside the park, in Quepos or on the hillside above the beaches.
  6. Sunset. A restaurant on the hillside with a view over the bay.

The park's sloths and monkeys are wild animals. Do not feed them, even if others do. Take your rubbish out, and leave the beach as you found it.

Check your fare to Manuel Antonio

The hill road between Quepos and the park

The last 7 km (4 mi) deserve their own paragraph. Route 618 leaves Quepos, climbs a ridge and winds past hotels, restaurants and small shops, narrow, with a steady flow of buses, taxis and delivery trucks. In the high season the road can move at walking pace around mid-morning and again around mid-afternoon, and a pickup that looked generous on paper can disappear in traffic. We plan for it. The driver leaves early, takes the route that suits the hour, and tells you when it makes sense to walk the last part rather than sit in a queue.

If your hotel is on the hillside, the drive to the gate may be only a few minutes, but the climb back at the end of the day is slower than it looks on a map. If you are staying in Quepos itself, you have the advantage of restaurants and a marina nearby and the disadvantage of the full length of the hill road each way. Tell the desk the name and address of your hotel and we plan the timing from there.

What to bring and how to behave around the animals

The park is hot and humid, and the trails are a mix of boardwalk, packed earth and steps. Closed shoes or sturdy sandals, a hat, water and insect repellent are the basics. Bring a swimsuit and a dry towel if you plan to use the beaches, and keep your phone in a waterproof pouch. Ask at the gate about current rules on food and bags, since the park sets these and they can change.

Wildlife behaves best when you do. Keep your distance from sloths and monkeys, do not feed them, and do not use flash. Monkeys are quick to take unattended bags, so zip everything shut and keep it on your body. If a guide is with you, follow the guide's lead on where to stand. A licensed naturalist is a different professional from a chauffeur, and the person who spots a sloth in a tree you walked past will usually be the guide, not the driver.

A coastal extension: Quepos, the estuary and the next beach

Manuel Antonio is the headline, but the surrounding coast fills a second day. Quepos has a working waterfront and restaurants, and boat operators run estuary and mangrove trips from the area. Beach towns to the north and south of the park offer different kinds of surf and quieter sand. A chauffeur can sequence these around a single park day, and the desk can arrange a series of short transfers on one account, so that you do not have to negotiate each ride on the street.

If your itinerary also covers the north of the country, our attractions hub lists the guides we have written for each region. For a very different Caribbean-side beach day, our Saona Island guide explains a boat-based excursion, and the blog index lists everything in the series.

The public bus and the shared shuttle are the honest low-cost options, and for a solo traveler on a budget they are good ones. A private chauffeur is better for families with children, for groups of three or more, for travelers with surfboards or large bags, and for anyone who wants to stop on the way.

Stops on the road from San Jose

The route from the capital to the coast passes several places worth a pause. The Tarcoles river bridge, a short distance off the highway, is a well-known place to look down on crocodiles. Beach towns such as Jaco offer lunch and surf. A chauffeur can tell you which stops are safe for parking and which are not, and can keep your luggage in sight while you walk to a lookout. Keep valuables out of sight in any parked vehicle in the region, and let the driver advise which stops are secure.

If your plans include the northern end of the country, our guide to Arenal Volcano explains the reverse journey. The Costa Rica tourism board has the national overview. For a city day in Central America, see Panama Canal Miraflores Locks. The Latin America and Caribbean directory lists every guide, and our private tours with driver page explains the day-hire structure.

Surfboards, strollers and seats

A beach-and-rainforest trip comes with awkward luggage: boards, strollers, dry bags. A sedan covers one to three travelers with ordinary cases; a Chevrolet Suburban-class SUV takes up to six with room to spare, and a Sprinter handles a larger group. Ask for child, toddler or booster seats when you book, and the exact vehicle is confirmed then.

The booking sits with our worldwide desk, which is staffed around the clock, and the driving is done by a local operator that we have vetted for licensing and insurance. Your flight is tracked on airport pickups, and the fare is fixed and quoted before you pay. A trade account lets tourism offices and hotel concierges book chauffeur services for their visitors.
