There are two ways to see Multnomah Falls. One is to stop at the I-84 exit and walk through a tunnel to the lodge. The other is to treat the Columbia River Gorge as a day: a drive along a historic road, several waterfalls, a viewpoint, lunch in a river town. A multnomah falls and columbia river gorge private tour with driver is built for the second, partly because the first has become awkward in summer.

The Forest Service describes the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area as a spectacular river canyon, about 80 miles (130 km) long and up to 4,000 feet deep, and the only sea-level route through the Cascade Mountains. The west end has lush conifer forest and the east end grassland, because the mountains cast a rain shadow. Multnomah Falls is the best-known stop on the western stretch.

Do you need a permit to stop at Multnomah Falls?

In 2026, the I-84 Exit 31 parking lot required a Timed Use Permit between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily from May 22 to September 7, booked on Recreation.gov. The permit season has ended; details for 2027 had not been posted when we checked, so confirm before you travel.

The Forest Service's Recreation.gov page for the permit explains the 2026 system. Permits were required daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., sold only online, in one-hour slots, with a limit of two per day; they released 14 days before arrival at 7 a.m. Pacific time, with a second release two days before. A permit covered one private vehicle and its occupants, and, importantly, did not guarantee parking: the page directs visitors to Oregon's TripCheck cameras to see whether the Exit 31 lot has room. Bicycles did not need a permit, and riders on shuttle services such as the Columbia Gorge Express, Gray Line and Sasquatch Shuttle did not need one.

The Oregon Department of Transportation page says that outside the permit season there is no timed-use requirement, and that 2027 details will be posted on the ODOT site and at recreation.gov. Because today is October 16, 2026, the permit window is closed. Visitors who travel in 2027 summer should check Recreation.gov and the ODOT waterfall corridor permits page well in advance.

One question the Forest Service page does not answer is how a chauffeur-driven commercial vehicle is classified. It describes the permit for private vehicles and notes that tour operators with questions should contact the Forest Service. We therefore ask the desk to check the arrangement for your vehicle class and date at booking, rather than assume.

Distances from Portland and the airport

Multnomah Falls is on Interstate 84 at Exit 31, east of Portland. From Portland International Airport it is roughly 40 km (25 miles) and 30 to 40 minutes via the freeway; from downtown Portland about 48 km (30 miles) and 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic. Hood River is a further 50 km (31 miles) east, about 35 to 40 minutes. Rush hours on I-84 and I-205 are heavy, and a crash at the Sandy River crossing can add an hour. Seattle is a separate, long drive north; for the Washington side of the Cascades, see our guides to Mount Rainier, the Space Needle and Pike Place Market. Our airports directory lists the terminal guides we have published, and the North America directory lists city services.

The falls themselves

The Falls plunge in two tiers, a combined drop commonly given as 620 feet (189 meters). A paved trail of roughly a quarter mile (400 meters) climbs to Benson Bridge, which spans the lower tier and offers a close view of the upper drop. The lodge at the base dates from the 1920s and houses a Forest Service information center, a gift shop and a restaurant. A Forest Service alert posted on the Gorge page said the Multnomah Falls restrooms were closed for renovation through November 2026, so plan comfort stops accordingly.

The walk to the bridge is steep enough to wind some visitors but short enough for most. Longer trails continue above the bridge for hikers; ask the information center about conditions and closures before setting out. In winter, ice on the bridge and trail is common, and fallen rock or trail damage can close sections.

The Historic Columbia River Highway option

Instead of the freeway, the Historic Columbia River Highway (US 30) winds through the forest above the river, with views and short waterfall stops. The Forest Service page states that timed-use permits were not required on the Historic Columbia River Highway in 2026, but the small paid lot at Multnomah Falls on that road has limited spaces and no waiting is allowed when full. ODOT warns that parking on the shoulder is prohibited and that vehicles may be ticketed or towed, and that construction was underway on the highway.

For a chauffeur-driven day, the Historic Highway is attractive for its scenery but unreliable for stopping. A common compromise is to drive the old road past waterfalls and viewpoints, stop where the vehicle can legally pull in and use the freeway where time matters. Your driver will check TripCheck and the day's conditions rather than commit to a single plan. Check the Forest Service Gorge page for alerts.

What else belongs in a Gorge day?

A highway at night
A highway at night
  • Other waterfalls on the corridor. Several smaller falls sit along the Historic Highway between Troutdale and Multnomah; the Forest Service page names Wahclella Falls and Fairy Falls among the Gorge's highlights. Roadside access changes with construction and closures.
  • Viewpoints. Crown Point and its Vista House overlook the river west of the falls on the Historic Highway; check Oregon State Parks for hours and access.
  • Cascade Locks and Hood River. River towns with food, breweries and orchards, about 30 and 50 km east of the falls respectively.
  • Columbia Gorge Express. A shuttle service connecting Gateway Transit Center in Portland, Multnomah Falls, Cascade Locks and Hood River, per ODOT.

The Gorge is a working landscape, with more than 75,000 residents in 13 urban areas across six counties in Oregon and Washington, according to the Forest Service. That is why traffic, roadworks and local restrictions matter.

Why the Gorge changes so much from west to east

The Forest Service explains the landscape in one line: the Cascades create a rain shadow. Drive east from Portland and you pass from wet, mossy conifer forest around Multnomah Falls to drier oak and grassland near Hood River and beyond, all within about an hour. That means you can plan a morning in damp forest and an afternoon in sun without leaving the same day trip. It also means you need two sets of clothes: a rain layer for the falls and sun protection for the east. Wind is a regular feature of the Gorge, which is why Hood River draws windsports crowds in summer, and gusts can be strong on the freeway near the river.

Accessibility and comfort

The paved trail from the lodge toward Benson Bridge is the main route to the falls and is steep in places; it is not a flat stroll. Visitors with limited mobility often enjoy the viewpoint at the base of the lower falls, which is close to the lodge, and leave the bridge for others. The Forest Service alert said the Multnomah Falls restrooms were closed for renovation through November 2026, so ask at the information center on the day about current facilities. The Historic Highway has limited accessible parking, ODOT notes only two ADA spaces in the small Multnomah lot on US 30 for valid placard holders. A chauffeur can drop you as close as legally possible and park elsewhere.

Child, toddler and booster seats can be fitted on request. Dress children in shoes with grip: the paths are wet for much of the year.

Arriving in Portland and going straight to the Gorge

Many visitors fly into Portland and want to see the falls before checking in. That works well if you arrive in the morning: the drive from the airport to Exit 31 is 30 to 40 minutes, and the falls can fill the gap before a hotel is ready. Luggage stays in the vehicle, and the lodge area is small, so travel light for the walk. If you arrive late in the day, the falls are better saved for the following morning, when light and crowds are kinder.

For groups arriving together, an Executive Sprinter seats up to twelve to fourteen with luggage, and a Luxury SUV takes up to six. Remember the Exit 31 lot is small, and large vehicles are harder to place when it is busy, so your driver may drop the party at the entrance and wait elsewhere. For corporate groups the Gorge is an easy half-day between meetings: the lodge makes a convenient meeting point and the Hood River stretch suits a lunch.

Winter, fire and landslide conditions

The Gorge has suffered wildfire and landslide damage in recent years, and some trails and roads have closed for long periods. Winter storms can bring snow and ice to I-84, especially east of Multnomah Falls, and freezing fog can reduce visibility on the Historic Highway. These are normal Gorge conditions rather than rare events. We recommend checking ODOT's travel information and the Forest Service alerts on the morning of travel, and we will tell you if the day needs shortening. A confirmed booking can still be adjusted within the terms on your confirmation.

Best season and best hour

Waterfalls run strongest in winter and spring, and a wet-weather visit rewards those who dress for it. Summer brings the largest crowds, warm weather and the permit system. Autumn can be spectacular and quieter, with color along the river. Weekday mornings are calmest; weekends in summer fill the lot early. Fog and low cloud can hide the upper falls, so check the forecast the night before.

Winter driving on I-84 can be affected by snow and ice, especially toward Hood River and the east. A chauffeur will watch ODOT travel information and may recommend delaying or shortening the day.

A full day from Portland

  1. 8:00 a.m. Depart Portland by I-84; reach Exit 31 around 8:45 a.m., ahead of the lot filling.
  2. 9:00 a.m. Walk to Benson Bridge and the lodge. Allow about 90 minutes.
  3. 11:00 a.m. Drive the Historic Highway westward for viewpoints and smaller falls, as conditions allow.
  4. 1:00 p.m. Lunch in Hood River, 35 to 40 minutes east on the freeway.
  5. 3:00 p.m. Orchard or riverfront time; return to Portland by 5:30 p.m.

If you prefer a shorter outing, stop at Multnomah Falls for the morning and return to Portland for lunch. Our private tours with driver page explains how multi-stop plans are built.

If you are alone and happy with a fixed schedule, the shuttle is the lowest-cost and arguably simplest way to see the falls in summer, and riders did not need a permit in 2026. A chauffeur is better for groups, multi-stop routes, airport arrivals and winter weather.

Etiquette, safety and what to carry

  • Stay on the trails. Wet rock and steep drop-offs have caused serious accidents.
  • Carry water and a rain layer. The Gorge weather changes quickly.
  • Keep valuables out of sight in parked vehicles; break-ins occur at popular trailheads.
  • Respect closures. Wildfire damage and landslides have closed trails for long periods.

No client photography, no posts, NDAs on request: that is how our drivers handle privacy on a busy waterfall corridor. Interpretive guides are separate licensed professionals, and a client's own security team is welcome alongside our chauffeur. Seats for children can be added at booking.

Frequently asked questions
