Most people who arrive in Siem Reap are told the same thing: be at Angkor Wat before dawn. The advice is not wrong, but it hides the part that decides whether the morning goes well. The temple is a walk of several hundred meters from where cars stop. The pass has to be in your hand before you reach the gate. And the light you came for is only one of several good reasons to be in the park. An Angkor Wat private tour with driver is about removing the small frictions: a car that is warm, cool or dry as needed, a driver who knows which parking area is closest to which temple, and a person to meet at the end of a long walk in the heat.

This guide is written for travelers flying into Siem Reap, often via Bangkok, and for those who have already booked a hotel and now want the ground plan. Our fares for the car are quoted by our booking desk before you pay. They are not printed here.

What Angkor Wat is, in a paragraph

Angkor Wat is a Khmer temple built in the first half of the twelfth century, the best-preserved and largest structure in the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It faces west, which is why the Tourism Cambodia site notes that its best light is in the afternoon, while sunrise visitors see the five towers as silhouettes against the eastern sky. It is one of more than fifty temples reachable on the standard Angkor pass, and it is the only one that most visitors have seen photographed before they arrive.

How do you get to Angkor Wat from Siem Reap by car?

Angkor Wat is about 6 km (4 mi) north of central Siem Reap, a drive of 15 to 25 minutes. The road from town passes the main ticket checkpoint, where your pass is checked, then continues to parking areas near the west causeway. Visitors cannot drive onto the causeway; the final stretch is on foot.

Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) lies outside the town, and transfers into the center typically take 45 to 60 minutes, so allow for the longer drive when you plan a morning-of arrival. From the town center the road north to the park is straightforward: a main avenue, a ticket checkpoint and then a signposted route to the temple. Before sunrise the road is quiet. By 7:00 a.m. it is busy with minibuses and tuk-tuks, and by 11:00 the parking areas are full.

The practical consequence is simple. If your priority is a calm Angkor Wat, you arrive in the dark with a pass already bought, and you finish by mid-morning. If your priority is comfort, you go in the afternoon, when the west-facing front is lit and the crowds have thinned. The middle of the day is for lunch and air conditioning.

Angkor passes: what to buy and when

Tickets for the park are sold by the Angkor Enterprise, the official operator. The official ticket page lists these passes as of 2026, in US dollars: a one-day pass at $37, a three-day pass at $62 valid within seven days, and a seven-day pass at $72 valid within 30 days. Entry opens at 5:00 a.m. and closes at 6:30 p.m. according to the same page. Individual temples may close earlier, and tourism authorities list Banteay Srei at 5:00 p.m. and Kbal Spean at 3:00 p.m.

Buy through the official website at angkorenterprise.gov.kh rather than through a third party. A photo is taken at the checkpoint when you buy in person, and passes are checked at park entries and at major temples; the fine for travelling without one is significant. Sites outside the standard park, including Koh Ker, Beng Mealea and Kbal Spean, have separate tickets, and Phnom Kulen has its own fee.

If you are comparing, the one-day pass is enough to see Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom with the Bayon, and Ta Prohm on a long day. A second day is worth it for the further temples; a third for the Grand Circuit and Banteay Srei. Do not buy the seven-day pass unless you plan to spend a week there.

The sunrise plan, as a chauffeur runs it

The sunrise plan has fewer moving parts than it seems, but each one matters.

  1. 4:15 a.m. Pickup at the hotel. The pass is already on your phone or printed.
  2. 4:35 a.m. Passing the checkpoint. Cars queue briefly on busy mornings, and the chauffeur positions the vehicle so that the line moves rather than the car idling in it.
  3. 4:50 a.m. Drop at the parking area nearest the west causeway. Walk across the moat on the stone causeway, about 10 minutes at a steady pace. Take a small flashlight or use the phone light; the stones are uneven.
  4. 5:15 a.m. to sunrise. Find a spot at the reflection pools to the left of the entry path, or stay on the causeway for a wider frame.
  5. After sunrise. Enter the temple and climb the upper level while the sun is still low. Many visitors go back to breakfast in town at this point, which is why entering the temple at 7:00 a.m. is quieter than the sunrise itself.
  6. 9:30 a.m. The chauffeur is waiting at the same parking area or a nearby one, whichever you choose to agree on.

Our desk gives you a meeting point and a mobile contact in the confirmation. Drivers wait in the car park area, not at the temple gate, so agreeing a location before you walk in avoids the common problem of looking for the wrong white car in a row of identical ones.

Dress, heat and etiquette

Angkor Wat is a working religious site for Cambodians as well as an archaeological park. Shoulders and knees should be covered for entry to the upper level and to temple sanctuaries; a lightweight scarf or long shorts handle most of the problems. Remove hats when you enter a sanctuary. Do not touch relief carvings, and do not climb on structures marked as closed.

The climate shapes the day. Cambodia can be visited all year, with a cool season from about November to March at around 23 to 29°C, a hot season from March to May at around 27 to 37°C, and a rainy season from May to October at about 24 to 33°C with high humidity, according to the Ministry of Tourism. In the hot months, plan the strenuous part of the visit before 10:00 a.m. and keep the hours around noon for the hotel. Water in the car is helpful; a cool towel is even more so.

For notes on seasonal conditions across the province, see the Ministry of Tourism travel guide for Siem Reap, and for the park itself the Tourism Cambodia page on Angkor.

A day with a chauffeur: the Small Circuit, then a long lunch

The park is arranged around two loop roads. The Small Circuit, roughly 17 km, takes in Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom with its South Gate and the Bayon, Ta Keo, Ta Prohm and the Terrace of the Elephants. The Grand Circuit, roughly 26 km, adds Preah Khan, Neak Pean, Ta Som and East Mebon. Both are distances along the loop, not from town.

A day that works well for most travelers:

  • 5:00 to 8:30 a.m. Sunrise at Angkor Wat, then the interior.
  • 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Angkor Thom: the South Gate causeway, the Bayon with its stone faces, and the Terrace of the Elephants. The Bayon is in the center of Angkor Thom.
  • 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Ta Prohm, known as the jungle temple. The Tourism Cambodia site notes that photographs work well when sunlight comes through the foliage, which means late morning for many trees.
  • 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. Lunch in town and a break at the hotel.
  • 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. Return to Angkor Wat for the west-facing light, or visit Preah Khan, which Tourism Cambodia places about 2 km northeast of Angkor Thom on the Grand Circuit.

A licensed guide is a separate professional and is worth hiring for the Bayon reliefs and the architecture of Angkor Wat; a chauffeur drives and can suggest stops but does not interpret the carvings. Ask our desk if you want a guide arranged alongside the car, and say so when you book.

Beyond the main circuits

Three further destinations suit travelers on a second or third day, and each depends on the car rather than on a tuk-tuk.

Banteay Srei, a small red sandstone temple, is about 35 km (22 mi) from Siem Reap and closes at 5:00 p.m. according to tourism authorities. Allow one hour each way.

Kbal Spean, a river carved with images, lies about 50 km northeast of town and closes at 3:00 p.m. It needs a short uphill walk through forest. The ticket is separate from the standard pass.

Phnom Kulen, a sacred mountain about 60 km from Siem Reap, has its own fee and is best planned on a day without a hard deadline. Rainy-season roads can be slow. The Ministry of Tourism warns that in the last two months of the rainy season, some rural roads may be impassable, so check conditions before leaving.

Stairs, surfaces and who should skip what

Angkor Wat is not step-free. The causeway stones are uneven, the galleries have raised thresholds, and the climb to the upper level is by steep stone stairs that many visitors find demanding in the heat. Check the current access arrangements on the day, because upper-level entry is managed and can involve a queue. If a member of your party cannot climb, the lower galleries, with their long bas-reliefs, are rewarding on their own, and the Bayon and Ta Prohm both involve level walking over short distances. Tell the desk about mobility needs at booking and we will place the meeting point at the closest practical parking area.

For a quieter afternoon, travelers sometimes pair the temples with a boat visit to Chong Kneas, a floating village on the edge of the Tonle Sap, which the official Angkor Enterprise site also highlights. The Ministry of Tourism describes the lake as the largest freshwater reserve in Southeast Asia, and its level changes strongly between seasons, so ask about boat access before you commit.

How to reach Angkor Wat: the honest comparison

Way to goTime from central Siem ReapCost noteBest for
Tuk-tuk20 to 30 minutesLowest, agreed in advanceSolo travelers, short visits, cool mornings
Hotel shuttle20 to 30 minutesIncluded or lowTravelers on a fixed hotel schedule

Private chauffeur car15 to 25 minutesFixed fare via the bookerFamilies, groups, heat-sensitive travelers, long days

A tuk-tuk is the lowest-cost way and suits many people. Its drawbacks are heat, dust, and slow progress on the longer circuits. A chauffeur is worth considering if you travel with older relatives, small children, or you intend to reach Banteay Srei or Kbal Spean.

Planning around the rest of your trip

Most visitors arrive via Bangkok, and our notes on Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport and the Bangkok chauffeur service page cover the stop before Cambodia. If you are seeing Thai temples before or after Angkor, our guides to the Grand Palace, Wat Arun and the ruins at Ayutthaya form a natural sequence. For another major Buddhist monument in the region, Borobudur in Central Java is the one travelers most often compare with Angkor. The full list of destinations is on our Asia-Pacific directory, and the way we organize guided days is described on private tours with driver.

Tourist offices and tourism boards can book chauffeur services for their visitors with LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com through a trade account.

About 6 km (4 mi) north of central Siem Reap, typically 15 to 25 minutes by car, depending on traffic and the hour.

Can a car drive right up to Angkor Wat?

Cars stop at parking areas near the temple. The west causeway across the moat is walked on foot, which takes about 10 minutes.

How much is an Angkor Wat ticket?

As of 2026, the official ticket page lists $37 for a one-day pass, $62 for a three-day pass and $72 for a seven-day pass. Buy through the official site and check the page before travelling.

The official ticket page lists entry from 5:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for the park. Individual temples can close earlier, so check before building your schedule.

Cover your shoulders and knees. A light scarf is an easy fix, and comfortable closed shoes are better than sandals on the steep upper stairs.

What is the best time of year to visit Angkor?

The cool season from November to March is the most comfortable. March to May is hot, and May to October is the rainy season, though mornings are often clear.

Is a private driver better than a tuk-tuk?

A tuk-tuk is the lowest-cost option and works well for a short, local visit. A private car suits long days, further temples, families and travelers sensitive to heat.

Can I hire a guide through the same booking?

A guide is a separate licensed professional. Tell our desk when you book and we can arrange a guide alongside the car.
