Why does a Suvarnabhumi airport transfer take 40 minutes at midnight and 90 at 5 pm?
Suvarnabhumi is about 30 km (19 miles) east of central Bangkok. The road is not the problem; the traffic is. A late-night car can reach Sukhumvit in 40 minutes, while a weekday rush can take 90 or more. A fixed-fare private transfer takes the pricing uncertainty out of that swing.
Every visitor to Bangkok learns the same lesson in the first hour: distance in this city is measured in time, and time is set by the hour of the day. The expressways that carry airport traffic towards Sukhumvit, Silom and the river fill at predictable moments, and a driver who knows which expressway to choose at 17:30 on a Friday is worth the booking by himself.
LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com books Suvarnabhumi airport transfers through its 24/7 desk. Each ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur operator from our worldwide directory, and our desk books, confirms and invoices it: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice and one contact who answers at any hour.
One terminal, several levels: how Suvarnabhumi is laid out for ground transport
Unlike airports that split arrivals over several buildings, Suvarnabhumi's passenger operations sit in one main terminal, and its ground transport is organized by level. According to the airport operator's transport pages, public taxis operate around the clock from Level 1 between Gates 4 and 7 on the inner curb, and you must take a queue ticket first. Electric VIP taxis use the middle curb. Grab, the ride-hailing app, has a pick-up point at Level 1, Gate 4, outer curb.

The airport's official limousine partner has service counters on Level 2 for both domestic and international arrivals, and the operator's published meeting points are on Floor 2 of the arrival zone, at Exit A, Exit B-C, Entrances 3-4 and Entrances 9-10. Smaller vans and a 27-seat limo bus operate from Level 1 near Gate 8. The Airport Rail Link station is on Level B1, and the airport also runs a free shuttle between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang for passengers connecting between the two airports.
A pre-booked chauffeur from another operator does not use those counters. The driver meets you in the arrivals area according to your confirmation and, with the name-board option, holds a board with your name or an alias. The exact meeting point is stated in your booking, because Thai airport layouts and gate numbers are reorganized from time to time. See our meet-and-greet service page for details.
Entering Thailand: the Digital Arrival Card
Thailand introduced the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, or TDAC, for all non-Thai nationals entering the country from 1 May 2025, by any mode of transport. It is completed online, free, on the government's official portal, and sources describing it say it can be submitted only within three days before arrival. You receive a QR code by email, which immigration may ask to see together with your passport.
The practical advice is to complete it the day before you fly, keep a screenshot, and ignore any third-party site that charges a fee. The official portal is tdac.immigration.go.th. Rules differ by passport for visas and exemptions, so check the Thai government or your embassy for your own situation.
Once you are through immigration and customs, your driver is waiting. Our free waiting period after an international landing is 60 minutes, which covers ordinary immigration queues and baggage collection. Queue times at Suvarnabhumi vary widely with the number of flights arriving together, so we do not promise a number, and we do track the flight so the pickup follows your real landing.
Suvarnabhumi drive times and distances
Distances are approximate road distances. Times are for normal traffic and use the expressways, and they stretch badly in the weekday morning and evening peaks. Expressway tolls are included in a fixed fare quote.
| Destination | Approx. distance | Typical drive time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sukhumvit (Asok, Phrom Phong) | about 30 km (19 mi) | 40 to 80 minutes | Heaviest traffic in the evening |
| Siam, Pratunam, Ploenchit | about 30 km (19 mi) | 40 to 80 minutes | Central shopping and hotel belt |
| Silom and Sathorn | about 35 km (22 mi) | 45 to 90 minutes | Business district |
| Riverside hotels | about 40 km (25 mi) | 50 to 90 minutes | Charoen Krung and the Chao Phraya |
| Grand Palace and Old City | about 40 km (25 mi) | 55 to 100 minutes | Dress code applies to the palace |
| Don Mueang Airport | about 45 to 50 km (28 to 31 mi) | 50 to 90 minutes | Allow extra time for connections |
| Ayutthaya | about 100 km (62 mi) | 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes | Day trip or transfer north |
| Pattaya | about 120 km (75 mi) | 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours | East coast, motorway |
The shorter end of each range is a late-night or midday figure. If you must be at a meeting by a fixed hour, tell the desk; we can set the pickup earlier and plan the expressway option.
Taxi, rail link, bus or private chauffeur: the honest comparison
Bangkok has real alternatives, and in one case the cheaper option is clearly better.

| Option | Typical time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport Rail Link City Line | A fixed-schedule ride to Phaya Thai, then BTS or taxi | Lowest | Light luggage, hotels near BTS, avoiding road traffic |
| Public taxi | 40 to 90 minutes | Metered plus an airport surcharge and tolls | Spontaneous arrivals, short stays |
| Ride-hailing (Grab) | 40 to 90 minutes | Surge-priced at peak | Travelers with a local data plan |
| Airport limousine counter | 40 to 90 minutes | Fixed by vehicle class | Walk-up bookings at Level 2 |
| Private chauffeur | 40 to 90 minutes | Fixed fare via the booker | Groups, luggage, late arrivals, executives |
The Airport Rail Link is the better choice at rush hour if your hotel is near a BTS station: it ignores the expressways, the City Line ends at Phaya Thai, and the airport lists its operating hours as 05:30 to midnight. Its limitation is the last mile; many luggage-laden travelers still need a taxi at the other end.
The airport states that public taxis require a queue ticket, that the meter starts at a fixed base, and that an airport surcharge is paid directly to the driver. That is a perfectly good system. What it does not give you is a price before you sit down, a driver who has your flight number, or a pickup that tracks a delayed aircraft. That is what pre-booking buys.
Arriving late or very early at Suvarnabhumi
Suvarnabhumi receives many long-haul flights in the late evening and in the early hours, and the Rail Link does not run through the night. Taxis operate 24 hours, and so do the airport's published limousine pickup points. A chauffeur is the calm answer when you land at 01:00 after a day of travel, because you do not have to join a queue at the curb or bargain with anyone.
If you land at dawn and your room is not ready, ask the desk about an hourly booking from the airport. The driver can take you to breakfast, to a meeting, or to see the temples while your hotel prepares the room. See our hourly chauffeur service page.
Changes of plan are simple. Flight tracking adjusts the pickup when you land early or late. Cancellation terms: more than 72 hours' notice no charge, 72 hours or less 10%, 48 hours or less 50%, and 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time.
From the airport to the temples: a first day in Bangkok by car
Bangkok's major sights are close together but not close to the airport, and a chauffeur makes the day efficient. The Grand Palace requires modest dress with covered shoulders and knees, and visitors are expected to behave respectfully inside; the guide covers dress and timing. Across the river, Wat Arun is best at the end of the day when the light is low.
Outside the city, Ayutthaya Historical Park is the classic day trip, and the Damnoen Saduak floating market is a morning outing. Where a site requires or recommends a licensed guide, we say so, since a chauffeur drives and can suggest stops but is not a guide. Our private tours with a driver page explains the format, and the Bangkok chauffeur service page covers city hire and day trips.
Vehicles, luggage and who rides with us
For one or two passengers, a First Class Sedan (Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar) seats up to three with two large and two cabin bags. A Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon Denali or similar) seats up to six with five to six large bags. An Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter) seats 12 to 14 passengers and carries 12 bags for a wedding party or a delegation. In Asia we describe sedans by Mercedes-Benz E-Class and S-Class and vans by V-Class where available. Exact models are confirmed at booking, and Maybach, Rolls-Royce and Bentley are available on request with availability confirmed at booking. See the fleet page for classes.

Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking, and most vehicles have water and phone chargers. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, NDAs are signed on request, and alias bookings are standard. We are a chauffeur service, not a security company, and we work alongside your own security team. Alcohol is never promised on board, and local law applies.
Business, trade and conference arrivals
Bangkok hosts large conferences and trade events, and a delegation arriving on several flights is a common brief. The desk can schedule staggered pickups against flight numbers, assign one coordinator for the group, and invoice the organization on a single account. See conference transportation and the events page, and for ongoing programs our corporate car service page.
Official tourist offices, tourism boards and visitor centres can book chauffeur services for their visitors with LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com through a trade account. See the tourist offices of Asia Pacific for the regional overview.
Related airports and planning pages
Travelers building a regional itinerary often compare Bangkok with Singapore Changi and Hong Kong International. The airports hub lists all of them, and the Asia Pacific directory lists regional pages. The operator's own transport pages are the best reference for current gate and level details: see the ways to transport page and the AOT Limousine page.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Suvarnabhumi Airport from central Bangkok?
About 30 km (19 miles) to the Sukhumvit and Siam area and 35 to 40 km (22 to 25 miles) to Silom, the river and the Old City. Drive time ranges from about 40 minutes at night to 90 minutes or more at peak.
How long does it take to get from Suvarnabhumi to Sukhumvit by car?
Typically 40 to 80 minutes. A late-night arrival can be at the lower end, and a weekday evening can be longer. Tell the desk if you have a fixed appointment so the pickup can be planned with margin.
Do I need the Thailand Digital Arrival Card?
Non-Thai nationals entering Thailand have needed the TDAC since 1 May 2025, completed free on the official government portal within three days before arrival. Check the portal and your embassy for your own case.
Where does my chauffeur meet me at Suvarnabhumi?
According to your confirmation. The driver tracks your flight and meets you in the arrivals area. With the name-board option, a representative holds a board with your name or an alias.
Is the Airport Rail Link better than a car?
At rush hour, if you are traveling light and your hotel is near a BTS station, often yes. A car is better for multiple bags, groups, children, late-night arrivals and hotels far from stations.
Can you take me from Suvarnabhumi to Pattaya?
Yes. Pattaya is about 120 km (75 miles) away, and the trip takes 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic. Tell the desk your hotel so the driver can plan the route.
Can you transfer me between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang?
Yes. The distance is roughly 45 to 50 km (28 to 31 miles) and the time varies widely, so allow generous margin if you have a connecting flight. The airports also run a free shuttle for connecting passengers.
How long will the driver wait after landing?
For an international arrival, 60 minutes free waiting after landing. Other pickups carry 15 minutes. Flight tracking adjusts for delays.
