Antelope Canyon is the photograph that sends people to northern Arizona: a slot of sandstone, twisted by water into curtains of orange and violet. It is also one of the most tightly managed places in the region. The canyon is on Navajo land, tours are guided and permit-based, and the nearest town, Page, is hours from the cities most visitors fly into, so an Antelope Canyon private tour with driver starts with the road and the booking.

This guide is for travelers searching for an Antelope Canyon private tour with driver or asking how to get to Antelope Canyon by car. It covers the rules, the booking sequence, the distances, the time-zone trap that catches visitors from Las Vegas, and how to build a day or two around the canyon.

Can you visit Antelope Canyon without a guided tour?

No. Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation states that tour guides are mandatory at all Antelope Canyon locations, and visitors enter through authorized Navajo tour operators. The entry fee listed by the Navajo Nation is $15 per person, per location, per day, and tour companies add their own fees.

That rule shapes the whole trip. You are not choosing a time to turn up at a gate; you are booking a tour slot with a company on the official list and arriving at its office on time. Chauffeured travel fits well because the booking is the fixed point and the driver builds the rest of the day around it.

The operators and the permit: how the booking works

The Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation page lists the authorized companies. For the Upper Canyon, it names six; for the Lower Canyon, two; and it lists other slot canyons in the area separately. The page also notes that closures may be possible in bad weather and that visitors enter at their own risk.

The sequence in practice is:

  1. Choose Upper or Lower and an operator from the official list.
  2. Book a slot, usually weeks ahead for peak seasons. One Upper Canyon operator's page notes that slots open only one to two months in advance.
  3. Pay the tour fee and the permit. As an example from one authorized Upper Canyon operator in 2026, the standard tour is listed at $85 plus a $15 Navajo permit, with processing fees and tax extra. Prices differ by operator and by time of day, so check the one you choose.
  4. Arrive early. The same operator asks guests to check in 30 minutes before the tour time and states there are no refunds for late arrival.

The operator we looked at runs a 4x4 truck from the tour office, about 3 miles (5 km) east of Page off Highway 98, to the mouth of the canyon, with a total tour of about 90 minutes including a 60-minute canyon visit. Your driver cannot take the vehicle into the canyon, so the car waits at the tour office.

How to get to Antelope Canyon by car: Page is the base

Page sits beside Lake Powell. The numbers below are approximate, rounded from published road distances:

FromDistanceTypical driveNote
FlagstaffAbout 135 miles (217 km)2.5 hoursUS-89 north, two-lane highway
PhoenixAbout 276 miles (444 km)About 4.5 hoursI-17 to Flagstaff, then US-89
Las VegasAbout 280 miles (450 km)4.5 to 5 hoursI-15 north, then Utah and US-89
Grand Canyon Desert ViewAbout 115 miles (185 km)About 2 hoursAZ-64 east, then US-89 north
Horseshoe BendAbout 5 miles (8 km)10 minutesUS-89 south of Page

Plan generously. Services are limited on US-89, and the road is not lit at night, with animals crossing in the dark. The advice from local guides is to fuel in Kanab or Flagstaff. A driver who knows the route will already be topped up.

Why a Las Vegas day trip is a hard day

Las Vegas to Page and back is 9 to 10 hours of driving, not counting the tour. It can be done, but it leaves little room for delay. A tour slot at 10:40 a.m. means leaving the Strip around 4:30 a.m., and the return would reach the city after dark.

A better version has two options:

  • Overnight in Page. Drive on day one, take a morning slot, see Horseshoe Bend at sunset or the next morning and return the following day.
  • Drive in two directions. Start at Las Vegas, go east through Zion, stay in Page, and finish at the Grand Canyon or in Phoenix. Our Zion National Park guide covers the first leg.

If you are based in Phoenix or Flagstaff, the day is much easier: Flagstaff to Page is about 2.5 hours, and the return can be built into a loop through the Grand Canyon.

The clock problem: Nevada, Utah and Arizona

Time zones catch visitors from Las Vegas. Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year. Nevada and Utah both observe daylight saving time. The Page-area tour operators state their tour times in Arizona time, and one lists its slots as Phoenix time.

A car on a scenic road
A car on a scenic road

That produces two cases:

  • From the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November, Las Vegas (Pacific daylight time) and Arizona (Mountain standard time) show the same clock reading. Utah, which you cross on the way from Las Vegas, is an hour ahead of both.
  • From November to March, Arizona and Utah share a clock, and both are one hour ahead of Las Vegas. A tour at 10:40 a.m. in Page is 9:40 a.m. in Las Vegas, and a departure that looked comfortable on the Strip clock can leave you late.

The tour office is strict about arrival, so confirm which clock your voucher uses and set your driver's schedule in that clock. The Navajo Nation outside Page observes daylight saving, which is another reason the confirmation matters.

Upper, Lower and what changes by season

The Upper Canyon is entered at ground level and tours move in a group with a guide. Lower Antelope Canyon is entered by steep stairs, so it suits fewer visitors with limited mobility. Operators set their own accessibility guidance: one Upper Canyon operator says its tour is not wheelchair accessible and not recommended for limited mobility, so ask before you book if anyone in your group needs step-free access.

Light changes the experience. Operators describe midday beams of light in the Upper Canyon as a seasonal feature and say the best time varies through the year. Photographers should ask each company which slots suit the effect they want, because that is the operator's expertise, not ours.

What to bring and what to leave

Rules vary by company, and you should read yours. The operator we checked requires transparent bags that staff can see into, allows cameras but not tripods, monopods or selfie sticks, and asks for car seats or boosters for children aged five and under, which families bring themselves. Dress for sun and sand, wear closed shoes and carry water.

Navajo Nation parks generally prohibit drones and dogs, and camping, rock climbing and littering are banned in tribal park lands. Treat these rules as the baseline and follow your guide's instructions. The canyon is a place of cultural importance, and guides interpret it for visitors.

Weather, flash floods and closures

The Navajo Nation page warns that closures may be possible in inclement weather. Slot canyons can flood from storms many miles away, and summer monsoon thunderstorms are the main risk. Operators cancel or reschedule when conditions are unsafe, and the cancellation terms of the operator, not ours, apply to the tour itself. Check the forecast the day before and build a buffer into your itinerary.

Horseshoe Bend, the other half of the day

Horseshoe Bend overlooks a tight curve of the Colorado River and is about 5 miles (8 km) south of Page, off US-89 between mile markers 544 and 545. According to the National Park Service, the trail is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) round trip on a hardened path. There is a viewing platform with railings but no railing along the trail, much of the rim is exposed to a drop of roughly 1,000 feet, and there is no water or toilet on the trail.

The parking lot is on city land, and the City of Page collects the fee. National Park Service passes do not apply to it. Vehicles parked along US-89 are subject to towing. A driver can drop you at the lot and wait, and a late-afternoon visit combined with a morning tour is the usual pattern.

For a first-time visitor, the combination of an Upper Canyon morning and a Horseshoe Bend evening makes a full, unhurried day.

An Antelope Canyon private tour with driver: one day or two

A sensible two-day plan from Las Vegas or Phoenix looks like this:

  1. Day one: Drive to Page via Zion or Flagstaff. Check in. Horseshoe Bend at sunset.
  2. Day two, morning: Antelope Canyon tour at your slot. Lunch in Page.
  3. Day two, afternoon: Drive to the Grand Canyon's East Entrance at Desert View, about 115 miles (185 km) and two hours, and continue along the rim. See our Grand Canyon South Rim guide for the rim rules.
  4. Evening: Overnight at the rim or continue to Sedona for a longer loop.

Travelers starting in Las Vegas may also want the shorter Grand Canyon West Skywalk, which does not require an overnight. Our Las Vegas limo service and Phoenix and Scottsdale limo service pages cover the city legs, and the Harry Reid and Phoenix Sky Harbor airport pages cover arrivals.

Fuel, food and signal on the road to Page

The highway between Flagstaff and Page runs through open country with few services. Fuel before you leave Flagstaff or Kanab, carry water and snacks, and do not rely on a signal for navigation in every stretch. Your driver will carry the confirmation and the tour office details offline. If a crash or a weather event closes a stretch, the driver re-routes, and the 24/7 desk can be reached to pass a revised arrival time to the operator.

A note for photographers and film crews

Professional photography and filming in tribal parks normally needs separate permission from the land manager. If your trip includes commercial work, ask Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation before you travel, and tell the desk so the vehicle, the timing and the number of seats are arranged around your equipment. Photographers should also check whether their chosen tour includes extra time or a smaller group, because slots differ between operators.

If cost is the main concern, a rental car shared among several travelers is the lowest per head. A coach tour removes the driving. A private car makes sense when you want to link Page with the Grand Canyon, Sedona or Zion on your own timetable, or when the group includes people who should not spend four hours behind a wheel.

Respect and accessibility

Antelope Canyon belongs to the Navajo Nation, and Navajo guides interpret it. Follow their instructions, keep to the group and treat the walls with care. Tell the desk if anyone needs step-free routes, extra rest stops or a child seat, and we will plan the drop-offs and the schedule accordingly. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a guide to visit Antelope Canyon?

Yes. Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation states that tour guides are mandatory at all Antelope Canyon locations, and tours are run by authorized Navajo operators.

How much does it cost to enter Antelope Canyon?

The Navajo Nation lists an entry fee of $15 per person, per location, per day. Tour companies charge their own fees on top, and one authorized Upper Canyon operator listed a standard tour at $85 plus the $15 permit in 2026.

How far is Antelope Canyon from Las Vegas?

About 280 miles (450 km) by road, 4.5 to 5 hours each way. A same-day round trip is 9 to 10 hours of driving, so most visitors stay overnight in Page.

How far is Antelope Canyon from Phoenix?

About 276 miles (444 km), roughly 4.5 hours via I-17 and US-89.

What time zone is Antelope Canyon in?

Page and the tour operators use Arizona time, which does not change for daylight saving. Nevada and Utah do, so the offset from Las Vegas is zero in summer and one hour in winter.

Can I take a tripod into Antelope Canyon?

Rules vary by operator. One Upper Canyon operator allows cameras but not tripods, monopods or selfie sticks, and requires transparent bags. Check your operator's rules.

Can I visit Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon on the same day?

Yes. Horseshoe Bend is about 5 miles (8 km) south of Page, a 10-minute drive from the town, and the trail is 1.5 miles round trip. Many visitors do the canyon in the morning and the overlook at sunset.

Is Antelope Canyon wheelchair accessible?

It depends on the operator and the canyon. One Upper Canyon operator says its tour is not wheelchair accessible and not recommended for limited mobility. Ask before you book.

Can a limousine drive into Antelope Canyon?

No vehicle goes into the canyon itself. Tour operators carry guests by their own trucks from the tour office, and the car waits at the office.
