A Buckingham Palace private tour with driver starts with one fact that most travel pages bury: the State Rooms are not open all year. They are a summer opening, and in October the palace is a working royal residence with a short list of ways in. Knowing what is actually available on your dates decides whether your driver takes you to the Palace forecourt for a photograph, to the south-side entrances for a ticketed visit, or on to somewhere else entirely. This guide is written for travellers who will arrive by private car, and it is straightforward about what the car can and cannot do on this stretch of London.

What can you actually visit at Buckingham Palace in autumn and winter?

Buckingham Palace is the King's official London residence and a working royal palace. Its State Rooms open each summer. Outside that season the palace opens only on selected dates for small-group guided tours, while the King's Gallery and the Royal Mews, both beside the palace, run on their own schedules.

Royal Collection Trust, the charity that runs public visits, states this plainly on its Buckingham Palace page. At the time of writing, in mid-October 2026, the page lists one palace product for the coming months: an East Wing Exclusive Guided Tour running from 6 November 2026 to 31 January 2027. It is led by an expert guide in small groups and is described as the only way to visit the palace during the winter months. The published price is £100 per person as of 2026, and the page notes that tickets for summer 2027 will be released in November.

Two neighbouring venues fill the gap. The King's Gallery is listed as open daily, and its current exhibition, Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style, has been extended to 18 April 2027. The Royal Mews, the working stables and carriage collection where the 260-year-old Gold State Coach is displayed, is listed as open Thursday to Monday. Both are ticketed separately from the palace and are a realistic half-morning on days when the State Rooms are closed.

If your dates fall between early July and the end of September, the picture changes: the State Rooms are the main event and tickets should be bought well ahead. The practical advice below applies in every season because the building, the roads around it and the guard ceremony do not change.

How do you get to Buckingham Palace by car from Heathrow and central London?

From Heathrow the palace is about 24 km (15 mi) away by road, usually 45 to 80 minutes depending on the hour. The route runs along the M4 and the Great West Road, then through Hammersmith, Kensington and Knightsbridge to Hyde Park Corner, which puts you at the western end of the palace's own street layout. The 07:30 to 09:30 and 16:30 to 19:00 weekday windows are the slow ones.

From St Pancras International and King's Cross, expect about 6 km (4 mi) and 20 to 35 minutes through Bloomsbury and Piccadilly. If you land at Heathrow and want to reach the palace on the same morning, our Heathrow chauffeur service tracks the flight, and the driver can take you to your hotel to leave bags before you continue, because security checks apply on entry and large bags slow them.

Everything in this part of London sits inside the central Congestion Charge zone, which Transport for London lists as operating 07:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday and 12:00 to 18:00 on weekends and bank holidays. You do not need to work out zone rules yourself: your fare is fixed and quoted before you book. The wider London chauffeur service page explains how the desk handles city-wide transfers.

Where can a chauffeur car stop near the palace?

This is the question that separates a smooth arrival from a frustrating one. The forecourt facing the Victoria Memorial is a ceremonial and security space, and the roads around it carry restrictions that change for royal events, parades and state visits. There is no general-purpose parking on the approach, and Royal Collection Trust states that there is no coach parking near the palace. For coach groups it says passengers can be picked up after they exit on Grosvenor Place.

For a private car the working pattern is simple. The driver drops you at the kerb nearest the entrance on your ticket, stays on call, and positions the car nearby until you return. The visitor entrances for the Royal Mews and the King's Gallery are on the Buckingham Palace Road side, on the south of the building, so that is where the car should aim for those tickets. Check the Map & Directions tab on your ticket confirmation, because the precise entrance for a given product is stated there and can differ between the State Rooms, the guided tour and the galleries.

If the plan is only to see the building from the outside and watch the guard, the car is best used for the arrival and departure and not for the viewing. Walk the last few hundred metres through St James's Park, and ask the driver to meet you on a quieter side street.

When is Changing the Guard, and how should you plan around it?

The Changing the Guard ceremony, formally Guard Mounting, is a handover between detachments of the King's Guard. The new guard marches to the palace from Wellington Barracks with music, and the ceremony is held at the palace, weather permitting. Royal Collection Trust lists times that vary by weekday and states that the schedule is set by the British Army and is subject to change, so treat any fixed minute you read on a travel site with caution and check the Army's published timetable the week you travel.

Crowds start building well before the ceremony, and the best sightlines go first. One useful trick is to approach from the Wellington Barracks side: the march passes along Birdcage Walk, and spectators at the Birdcage Walk edge of St James's Park see the guard for longer and with less crushing than at the forecourt.

Keep the morning loose: arrive about 45 to 60 minutes before the ceremony, then allow 20 to 30 minutes for the exit, because the roads fill with coaches and pedestrians the moment the guard has formed up.

How do tickets and booking work at Buckingham Palace?

All palace entry is sold by Royal Collection Trust on its own site, and this is the one place to buy. Our desk does not resell tickets and does not recommend any other seller. Group bookings of 15 or more must be pre-booked.

Two rules from the official page matter to people travelling with a driver. Guiding is not allowed at the palace: visitors use a free multimedia tour available in nine languages, so a private guide cannot walk you through the State Rooms. And accessible parking can be arranged by the Specialist Sales team subject to availability, but must be requested at least three full working days before the visit.

If you want a guide for the wider context, a licensed Blue Badge guide can meet you outside, walk the exterior and Westminster with you, and hand you to the ticket queue. That is a separate professional booked separately from your car. Our desk can coordinate timings around the guide's schedule so the driver is where the plan needs him.

Which ways of reaching the palace work best?

The honest answer is that the palace is one of the easiest central London sights to reach without a car, and a chauffeur makes most sense at the edges of the day or with luggage, children, mobility needs or a tight schedule.

Way to goFrom HeathrowCost noteBest for
Elizabeth line plus UndergroundAbout 60 to 75 minutes with one changeLowestLight luggage, flexible timing
Piccadilly line to Green ParkAbout 55 to 70 minutesLowestSolo travellers who like trains
Black cab45 to 80 minutes door to doorMetered, traffic dependentShort hops once in the city
Rideshare45 to 80 minutesSurge-priced at peakAd hoc trips, no luggage
Private chauffeur45 to 80 minutes door to doorFixed fare via the bookerFamilies, luggage, mobility needs, schedules

If you are travelling light and the weather is dry, the underground is the better value and the walk from Green Park through the park is part of the experience. The chauffeur option wins when the day includes an airport pickup, a hotel drop for luggage, a second site such as Windsor, or a guest who cannot manage steps and long walks.

What does a half-day chauffeured route around the palace look like?

A good morning combines the guard, a ticketed venue and one nearby stop without back-and-forth. Start with a pickup at your hotel at roughly the time that puts you near Birdcage Walk about an hour before the ceremony. After the guard, the driver collects you from a side street and takes you the short distance to the Buckingham Palace Road entrances for the Royal Mews or the King's Gallery. Both are quick enough, usually an hour each, to be finished by lunch.

For the afternoon, Westminster Abbey is a drive of about 1.2 km (0.7 mi), around 8 to 15 minutes, and pairs well because it keeps you in the same ceremonial London. The London Eye is about 2.5 km (1.5 mi) beyond, 10 to 20 minutes depending on Westminster Bridge, and works well at sunset. If the day suits a quieter rhythm, Kew Gardens is 12 km (7.5 mi) to the south-west and about 25 to 45 minutes away.

Can you add Windsor Castle to the same day?

Yes, and for many travellers it is the strongest pairing. Windsor Castle is about 35 km (22 mi) from the palace, usually 50 to 80 minutes by road. Windsor is open Thursday to Monday on the Royal Collection Trust listings, so check that the day you choose is one of them. Our guide to Windsor Castle by chauffeur covers the entrance, the guard march and the hours that apply as autumn moves into winter.

A realistic plan is to leave central London by 08:30, visit the castle for around two hours, lunch in the town and be back in the city by late afternoon.

What about accessibility, security and dress?

Royal Collection Trust offers concessionary rates for disabled visitors and a free access companion ticket, which can be booked online. The State Rooms tour is indoors across two floors and exits via a long outdoor gravel path through the garden, and the page warns that it can become hot inside during summer. Assistance dogs are welcome, and an audio-descriptive guide is offered for blind and partially sighted visitors.

Security checks apply on entry, so travel light. The palace is a working residence and smart casual is the sensible standard. If your visit coincides with a state event, nearby roads can close at short notice, so give the driver a flexible window.

Booking the car for a Buckingham Palace private tour with driver

Reservations go through our desk, which is staffed around the clock. A vetted, licensed and commercially insured local operator from our worldwide directory then delivers the ride, so the paperwork for the whole day is a single confirmation and invoice. Give us the arrival flight, the ticketed products and the stops in order. For an airport pickup the driver follows the flight and waits an hour without charge after an international landing, and can take your bags to the hotel before the palace visit.

One to three guests suit a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or E-Class, four to six with luggage suit a V-Class, and larger parties travel in an Executive Sprinter, with the exact model confirmed at booking. Hotel concierges, DMCs and visitor bureaus can use a trade account, and the tourist offices page explains how official offices book for their visitors. For wider planning, see private tours with driver and the Europe directory.
