Kew is the London attraction where the choice of gate genuinely changes your day. The garden is large, the four entrances sit on different sides of it, and the two most famous buildings, the Palm House and the Temperate House, are a long walk apart from some of them. A Kew Gardens private tour with driver therefore begins with a gate decision. Choose well and you are inside the glasshouses in five minutes; choose badly and you spend the first half hour walking along a lane in the rain.

Which Kew Gardens gate should a chauffeur use?

For most visitors the driver should use Victoria Gate, the main entrance on Kew Road, which is the quickest route to the Palm House and the Temperate House. Elizabeth Gate on Kew Green is Kew's coach drop-off point. Brentford Gate sits beside the garden's own car park, and Lion Gate is closest to Richmond.

Kew's own guidance, summarised on its visit page, says all four gates can be reached by rail, bus or river and that parking is limited. The pre-visit information describes Victoria Gate as the main entrance, with a café, a shop and a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Kew publishes walking times from Victoria Gate: about 5 minutes to the Palm House, 10 minutes to the Temperate House and to The Hive, and 20 minutes to the Great Pagoda.

Elizabeth Gate is the practical choice when the plan is a river or rail arrival, or when a driver wants a quiet set-down that avoids Kew Road. Brentford Gate is the one to request if you are leaving by car late in the day or if a guest has mobility needs and you have a parking reservation. Lion Gate works if you are coming from Richmond town and want to start with the woodland and the lake area. Tell the desk which attraction you most want first, and the driver will propose the gate.

How far is Kew from Heathrow, and how does that shape the day?

Kew is among the closest major sights to Heathrow, about 13 km (8 mi), typically 25 to 45 minutes depending on the A4, the M4 spur and the Chiswick and Kew Bridge approaches. That makes it a natural first-day stop for a long-haul arrival: you can land in the morning, drop bags at a hotel or keep them in the car, and be among the glasshouses before lunch. Our Heathrow chauffeur service page explains the meet-and-greet, and flights are tracked so the driver adjusts if the aircraft is early or late.

From central London, for example Hyde Park Corner, Kew is about 14 km (9 mi) and takes 35 to 60 minutes. From Windsor Castle it is about 25 km (15.5 mi), 35 to 55 minutes, which makes a Windsor and Kew pairing possible on a long day. The garden lies outside the congestion-charged centre, so the city-centre charge zone is not a factor. Our London chauffeur service page covers wider options for city arrivals.

What are the opening hours, and why do the glasshouses close early?

Kew's visit page currently lists daily opening from 10:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:00, though the hours change by season. The detail that surprises visitors is that the glasshouses close one hour before the gardens, so a late-afternoon arrival can miss the main buildings altogether. Treat 16:00 as the practical cut-off for the Palm House and the Temperate House in the colder months, and confirm the time for your date.

The Palm House needs a note. Kew states that it remains open but that it is being prepared for a planned renovation in 2027, and plants are being moved out of the glasshouse. Check the garden's news page before your visit so you know what the building looks like on the day. The Temperate House, described by Kew as the largest surviving Victorian glass structure in the world, was restored between 2013 and 2018, and it makes a good rain-day anchor.

How do tickets work, and does the car park matter?

Kew sells tickets through its ticketing page and at the gate, and online costs less. As of 2026 the adult peak-period price from 2 September to 31 October is £25 online or £28 at the gate, and the off-peak period from 1 November to 31 January is £17 online or £20 at the gate. Children aged 4 to 15 pay a lower price, and members, concessions and groups of 15 or more have their own rates. Bring the ticket on a phone or printed, together with any membership card or concession ID.

Parking is the constraint. Kew's car park at Brentford Gate (Ferry Lane, TW9 3AF) is for advance booking only, and Blue Badge holders can park free there subject to availability. Group organisers cannot add parking to a group ticket. That is why a driver is so useful here: your chauffeur drops you at the gate of your choice, and the car does not need a space inside the garden.

What does a three-hour chauffeured route look like?

Kew rewards a loop rather than a straight line. A good route starting at Victoria Gate looks like this:

  1. Walk to the Palm House (about 5 minutes) and spend 30 minutes among the tropical plants.
  2. Continue to the Temperate House (about 10 minutes from the gate) for 30 to 40 minutes.
  3. Walk on to The Hive, the aluminium and steel installation designed by Wolfgang Buttress, which opened in 2016, for 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Climb the Treetop Walkway, which rises 18 metres above the ground and has 118 steps, if the weather allows, and note that Kew asks visitors to leave buggies at ground level.
  5. Finish at the Great Pagoda if energy remains: it stands ten storeys and nearly 50 metres high, with a staircase of 253 steps.

Kew also publishes an Art and Architecture trail. Its main route is about 4.35 km and takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours; the shorter version, from the Temperate House back to the Palm House via King William's Temple, is 2.75 km and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. If the weather is bad, shorten the walking and keep the glasshouses at the centre of the visit.

How do you manage distance, steps and mobility?

Kew is flat in places and unexpectedly long in others. The land train, called the Kew Explorer, runs a full tour in about 30 minutes and is useful for guests who tire. Kew also lends wheelchairs at entry, according to its pre-visit guide, and its accessibility map labels most main paths as fully accessible with a few lawn and steep paths to avoid. The Treetop Walkway and the Great Pagoda are stair climbs, so they are not suited to every guest, and the Palm House has a wheelchair-accessible entrance at the south end.

If a member of your party cannot walk far, tell the desk and the driver will drop you at the gate nearest the glasshouses and collect you from the gate that suits the return. The pre-visit guide lists the Brentford Gate toilet as a fully accessible facility with a hoist, which is a useful detail for some guests.

What is the difference between autumn, winter and spring visits?

October and early November bring autumn colour in the arboretum and are the busiest weeks of the peak-priced period. Winter days are short, and with glasshouses closing early, a late-morning arrival is better than a late-afternoon one. Kew runs festive events in the Christmas season with their own entry guidance, so read the event's page if you are travelling in December.

Spring is the strongest season for the gardens themselves, with blossom and bulbs in bloom, and summer brings long evenings. The best strategy at any time of year is the same: arrive early, do the glasshouses first and leave the outdoor circuits for the end, when you can shorten them if the weather turns.

What are the local roads like around Kew?

The approach is a mix of main road and village lanes. Kew Road carries the traffic that serves Victoria Gate and Lion Gate, Kew Bridge is a recurring bottleneck on the way in from the north, and Kew Green is a conservation setting where the lanes are narrow and waiting is not welcome. A driver with local knowledge will keep the stop at Elizabeth Gate to a minute or two and reposition afterwards. If your plan includes Kew Pier, remember that the river boats depend on season and tide, so confirm the operator's timetable before building a return by water into the day.

On a dry weekday the whole transfer is routine. At weekends and in school holidays Kew Road can slow noticeably, so add 15 minutes to the central London journey times if you are travelling in those periods.

What should you wear and bring?

Kew is an outdoor garden with indoor interludes, so dress in layers. The Palm House is humid and warm, and Kew's pre-visit guide notes that the damp air can fog glasses, while the Temperate House is cooler and the outdoor paths can be breezy. Waterproof shoes help more than an umbrella in autumn. Bring water, a charged phone for the ticket and any membership or concession card you booked with, and keep valuables light. Your driver can carry coats and bags in the car, and you can swap layers at the gate if the weather changes during the visit.

How does Kew compare with the train and the river?

Kew is one of the few London sights that is easy to reach by train and by river as well as by road, so the comparison is real.

OptionTypical journeyCost noteBest for
District line or Overground to Kew Gardens35 to 50 minutes from central London, then 0.5 km walkLowestVisitors staying centrally with light bags

Rideshare35 to 60 minutesSurge-priced at peakAd hoc trips without bags
Private chauffeur25 to 45 minutes from HeathrowFixed fare via the bookerAirport arrivals, families, mobility needs

If you are staying in central London and travelling light, the train to Kew Gardens station, which Kew lists as 0.5 km from Victoria Gate, is the better value. A chauffeur is worth it for airport arrivals, for guests who cannot manage a station walk and for days that link Kew with a second sight.

Where does Kew fit into a longer day?

Kew pairs with Windsor, the Thames-side palaces and the central landmarks. Windsor Castle is the strongest combination for a full day, with Kew in the morning and the castle in the afternoon, since the castle's St George's Chapel closes at 16:00. Buckingham Palace is 12 km (7.5 mi) back into the city, 25 to 45 minutes, and the London Eye is about 14 km (8.7 mi), 30 to 55 minutes, so a sunset ride after a day in the garden works well.

Kew is a UNESCO property, and UNESCO lists Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew as a World Heritage property. If you are planning a longer stay in the capital, our guide to private tours with driver and the Europe directory show how the desk plans multi-stop days.
