Most castles ask you to climb to them. Chillon asks you to approach along the water. The fortress stands on a rock at the eastern end of Lake Geneva, with the Savoy Alps across the lake and the road and railway squeezed along the shore behind it. A Chillon Castle private tour with a driver suits that setting: the best way in is a slow drive along the lake, a drop at the gate and a quiet exit afterward.
This guide covers the practicalities for a visit by chauffeur: distances, the gate, opening hours, the 2026 programme and what to pair with the castle.
How far is Chillon Castle from Geneva Airport by car?
About 94 to 103 km (58 to 64 mi) depending on the route, which takes roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes in normal traffic. Central Geneva is a similar distance. Lausanne is roughly 30 km (19 mi) away and Montreux about 3 km (2 mi).
The motorway along the north shore of Lake Geneva is the fastest approach, and the castle is reached from the A9 via the Villeneuve or Montreux exits, according to visitor guides. Journeys from Geneva are usually smooth outside rush hours, and slower on Friday evenings and summer weekends when traffic heads for the Alps.
For arrivals at the airport, see the Geneva private aviation page if you fly by business jet, and the Geneva chauffeur service page for city pickups.
The castle in brief
Chillon is a medieval fortress that grew over centuries, first as a toll point on the route between the Rhône valley and the Alpine passes, and later as a residence and a prison. It belonged to the Counts of Savoy until the Bernese took it in 1536, and it became part of the canton of Vaud in 1798. Its best-known literary link is Lord Byron's 1816 poem The Prisoner of Chillon, inspired by the imprisonment of the reformer François Bonivard in the castle's vaults.

Inside, the visit runs through courtyards, halls, towers and the vaulted cellars. The official site offers self-guided and guided tours, and guided tours run in French, English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Chinese. An explanatory brochure is available in many languages.
The rock itself is the point. The castle is bounded on one side by the lake and on the other by the shore, and from the courtyards and walkways you see the water, the Alps and the long line of the Vaud and Savoy shorelines.
Hours, tickets and the autumn 2026 programme
The Château de Chillon website gives the visit details, and a few points matter for planning:
- Address: Avenue de Chillon 21, 1820 Veytaux.
- April to September: 9:00 to 19:00, last entry 18:00.
- November to February: 10:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:00.
- March and October: shorter days with last entry at 17:00; the site's listing of opening times for these months is ambiguous, so confirm before you go.
- Closed: 1 January and 25 December.
- Tickets: the site asks visitors to buy tickets online. As of 2026, the adult price is CHF 15 and the child price is CHF 7, with discounts listed on the visit page.
The castle also runs a changing programme. In October 2026, the site announces the exhibition Relics of the Future, with installations by students from ECAL, from 16 October, a thematic guided tour and lunch on 18 October in French, and autumn art-of-illumination workshops from 20 October that require booking. Events like these can change the hours, so check the site close to your date.
Coming from Bern, Zurich or the Alps
Chillon also works as a stop on a longer crossing of Switzerland. From Bern it is roughly 90 to 100 km (56 to 62 mi) and a little over an hour by motorway. From Zurich Airport it is about 220 km (137 mi), around 2 hours 30 minutes, which makes it a long but feasible first leg after an overnight flight; our Zurich Airport page explains the arrival pickup. Many guests prefer to land in Geneva for this reason. From the Bernese Oberland, the run down from Interlaken takes roughly 2 hours. Distances are approximate, and the booker confirms the route for your date.
Arriving at the gate: drop-off, parking and the bus alternative
Chillon is a heavily visited site on a narrow strip of shoreline, and the practical approach is simple.

A chauffeur can set you down at the entrance, wait nearby or return at an agreed time. Visitor guides report parking in front of the castle with a ticket-window permit, and roadside spaces above and below, but these arrangements vary and are not confirmed on the castle's own pages, so we plan the drop-off with the driver rather than relying on a parking spot. In busy weeks, a drop-off and a short wait is easier than a hunt for a space.
The alternatives are good if you want a lighter day:
- Bus 201 runs from Montreux, Vevey and Villeneuve, with a stop named Chillon directly outside the castle. From Montreux the ride is about 14 minutes, and buses come every 10 to 20 minutes, according to third-party guides.
- Train to Veytaux-Chillon station, about a 7-minute walk along the shore.
- On foot from Montreux, roughly 3 km along the lake, which takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on your pace.
Lavaux on the way: the vineyard terraces
If you are driving from Geneva or Lausanne, the best option is not the motorway for the whole way. Between Lausanne and Vevey, the road climbs through Lavaux, a landscape of steep vineyard terraces falling to the lake. The area is inscribed by UNESCO as Lavaux, Vineyard Terraces. The lower roads run slowly through villages, and a chauffeur can take that scenic route when time allows and the motorway when it does not.
A good plan: leave Geneva after the morning peak, take the motorway to Lausanne, drive the upper road through the terraces, then descend to the lake and Chillon. In clear weather the combination of vines, water and mountains is the visual reason to choose the car over the train.
The Montreux Riviera tourism site covers the wider area, including the lakeside promenade and events in the towns around the castle.
How long to allow inside
The castle's own site links a plan-your-visit section for current details. As a planning rule, allow around two hours for a self-guided visit with time for the courtyards and cellars, a little more if you join a guided tour or add a coffee. Avoid trying to squeeze the castle into a 45-minute gap: the stairs, the towers and the vaults reward slow pacing, and the last entry is an hour before closing in summer.
Visitors with limited mobility should check the site in advance. A medieval fortress has steps and uneven floors, and not every area is reachable by every visitor. Tell us at booking if anyone needs step-free routes, and we will arrange a drop-off as close as the road allows.
A Lake Geneva day with Chillon at the centre
This is a good shape for a first visit from Geneva.

- Morning pickup in Geneva. Leave after the commuter peak.
- Lausanne and Lavaux. About 30 km (19 mi) to Lausanne, then the terraced vineyards.
- Chillon Castle by late morning, when the courtyards are quieter and you have time before the lunchtime coach groups.
- Lunch in Montreux or Vevey. The lakeside promenade at Montreux is a pleasant walk, and you can return to the car by bus or on foot.
- Optional afternoon. Continue along the Rhône valley toward the Alps, or return to Geneva by the motorway, about 95 km (59 mi).
The loop is roughly 190 km (118 mi) round trip from Geneva, with about 3 hours of driving, plus the visit. Swiss motorways require a vignette, which is already on the vehicle. For a longer trip, continue to Zermatt up the Rhône valley, to the Bernese Oberland via Interlaken, or across the border to Chamonix and the Aiguille du Midi. Cross-border trips follow local cabotage rules, and the desk confirms what applies to your itinerary. Our private tours with driver page explains how a day like this is arranged.
After the castle: Montreux on foot
Montreux is three kilometres away, and it is easy to continue there once the castle is finished. The lakeside promenade runs along the shore, and the Montreux Riviera tourism site is the place to check for events, markets and seasonal programmes. A chauffeur can wait at the castle while you walk, then meet you in town, so you do not retrace your steps. If you have time for only one extra stop, make it a lakeside coffee in the town rather than a second museum, because the walk back along the water is the pleasant part.
Families with young children should plan for stairs, towers and uneven floors. A compact stroller is easier than a large one, and the audio brochure and the guided tours help keep restless children engaged. If you are travelling with older relatives, the bus and the car both make short work of the approach, and a drop at the gate saves the walk from the station.
When to go
The castle opens all year, and the experience changes with the season. Summer has the longest days and the highest crowds, with the courtyards busiest in the middle of the day. Spring and autumn offer softer light and fewer visitors, and the vineyards turn colour in autumn. Winter days are shorter, with a 10:00 to 17:00 schedule, but the lake can be dramatic in storms and the castle is quieter.
For photography, the lakeside path toward Montreux gives a good angle on the castle from the shore without needing the gate, and the light is often softest early and late in the day. If the weather is stormy, the lake is at its most dramatic, and the courtyards are quiet.
Ways to reach Chillon compared
| Mode | Typical time | Cost note | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train from Geneva Airport to Montreux, then bus 201 or Veytaux-Chillon | About 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes to Montreux, plus the last leg | Lowest | Solo travelers with light bags |
| Bus 201 from Montreux | About 14 minutes | Low | Visitors already based in Montreux |
| Walk from Montreux | 30 to 45 minutes | Free | Fit visitors on a fine day |
| Taxi from Montreux | Short ride along the shore | Metered | Short hops only |
| Rental car | About 1 hour from Geneva Airport | Fuel and parking | Confident drivers |
| Private chauffeur | About 1 hour from Geneva Airport | Fixed fare via the booker | Groups, luggage, a multi-stop day |
The train is the better value if you are staying in Montreux or Vevey and have nothing to carry. The chauffeur makes sense when you arrive at the airport with luggage, when the party is three or more, or when you want Lavaux and Chillon in one flexible day.
Booking the Chillon transfer
Tell us the pickup address, the time of the castle slot you have booked and the number of passengers, and the desk confirms the vehicle. A sedan suits couples and small families; a Luxury SUV suits four to six with luggage; an Executive Sprinter suits larger groups. Seats for children of any age can be added at booking.
Official tourism boards and visitor bureaus can use a LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com trade account to book chauffeur services for their visitors. The Europe directory lists the other cities we serve, and the attractions hub lists more guides like this one.
