Three numbers decide a visit to Dunn's River Falls: 8:30, 7:00 and 16:00. The park opens at 8:30 on ordinary days, at 7:00 on the days cruise ships are scheduled to call, and closes at 16:00. Arrive at the gate in the first half hour and you share a river with a handful of people. Arrive at 11:00 on a ship day and you share it with a thousand.

This guide is written for travelers who want a dunn's river falls private tour with driver and need the facts around it: where the transfer starts, how long the road takes from Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Falmouth and Kingston, what the park itself publishes about hours and tickets, and how to turn the falls into a half-day that also includes the rest of the Ocho Rios area.

What exactly is Dunn's River Falls?

Dunn's River Falls is a travertine waterfall on the north coast of Jamaica, near Ocho Rios in Saint Ann. A spring-fed river drops about 55 m (180 ft) over roughly 180 m (600 ft) of natural limestone terraces and runs into the Caribbean Sea. Visitors climb it with guides.

The water is rich in calcium carbonate, which is why the terraces are built up like shallow steps, and why the falls end directly on a beach. The Urban Development Corporation, the Jamaican government agency that lists the attraction, describes it as one of the island's national treasures and as a feature that continually regenerates itself from its river source down to the sea.

For the visitor, the practical consequence is that you will be wet. The official park map shows lockers at several points, a change room near the beach, a nurse's station by the falls and guide dispatch point, and a courtyard where tickets are sold. The park has a zip line, a splash pad in the gardens and a craft market. The climb itself is guided, and the park map shows a Falls Guide Dispatch point beneath a banyan tree, where guides are assigned and where there is wheelchair access to the viewing decks.

Hours, cruise-day hours and tickets, from the official sources

The Urban Development Corporation lists the park as open daily from 8:30 to 16:00, with extended cruise-day hours of 7:00 to 16:00 on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Treat those as the pattern, not a promise, because schedules change on holidays and on days when ships are scheduled. As of 2026 the same listing shows non-resident adult admission at US$25 and child admission at US$17, with lower Jamaican-resident rates that require valid Jamaican ID. Tickets are sold through the park's own site, which also links a waiver and release form.

Check three pages before you go: the Dunn's River Falls official site for tickets, facilities and the waiver; the Urban Development Corporation attractions listing for hours and fees; and the Visit Jamaica page for Ocho Rios for the wider area. The park is also reachable by phone and email via its site, which is the right route for large groups and special requests.

From Montego Bay: the long way round

Montego Bay's Sangster International Airport and the cruise and hotel zone around it are the biggest source of Dunn's River day trips. The road distance from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios is about 101 to 106 km (63 to 66 mi), and the falls are about 3 km (2 mi) farther on the Saint Ann side. A realistic drive time is about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes door to door, and it can stretch past three hours with roadworks, a stalled truck or a bad day through the coastal towns.

Start early. A pickup at 6:30 from a Montego Bay hotel puts you at the Dunn's gate for the opening at 8:30 with a margin and gives you the climb before the sun is high. The return is the part that surprises people: leave the park by 13:30 and you are back in Montego Bay for a late lunch, while a 16:00 departure puts you in the evening traffic through the coastal towns.

The airport's own site lists the taxi, transfer and rental options at Sangster, and you can read them on the Montego Bay airport website. If you arrive on an afternoon flight and plan the falls for the next morning, the booker lets you set both the airport pickup and the dawn departure on the same account. The wider list of gateways is in our airports directory.

From the cruise port at Ocho Rios, and from Falmouth

The ship day is where the cruise-day hours matter. From the Ocho Rios cruise pier the falls are a few kilometers away, about 5 km (3 mi) and 10 to 15 minutes by car depending on the bridge and the town traffic. A private car makes sense here for one reason: you control the time. Shore excursion coaches leave in waves and arrive in waves. If you are on shore at 7:00 on a Wednesday to Friday, you can be at the gate at opening hour and out before the first coach unloads.

Falmouth is a second port of call on this coast, and some cruise passengers come to the falls from there. The distance to Ocho Rios is roughly 70 km (43 mi), and the drive takes 1 to 1.5 hours, so plan on a long round trip and allow generous time before the ship's all-aboard. Our cruise ports directory explains how we handle cruise pickups, including keeping a safe margin before the ship sails. We recommend a return to the pier at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.

From Kingston and from Ian Fleming Airport

From Kingston the road distance is roughly 100 km (62 mi), and two hours is the working figure, more at rush hour. It is a viable day trip for business travelers who want a half-day in the hills, and the driver can wait at the park while you climb.

A private jet on the apron

If you are flying into the north coast's small airport at Boscobel, Ian Fleming International, the falls are only about 20 km (12 mi) and 25 to 30 minutes away. That makes a private jet or charter arrival, followed by a morning at the falls and an afternoon in the hotel, the easiest version of the trip. Our private aviation directory covers the FBO side of the service.

Shuttle, coach, taxi or private car: the trade-offs

Be honest about the budget choice here: from Ocho Rios town the falls are close enough that a short taxi or shared van is the sensible way, and for a solo traveler it is the lowest-cost option. A private car wins for groups of three or more, for early starts from Montego Bay, for ship-day timing and when you want a driver to wait while you climb.

A half-day plan: climb first, everything else after

The falls are best done as the opening act. A simple half-day:

  1. Gate at opening. Collect your ticket, lockers and guide, and climb at the front of the day.
  2. Beach and wash-down. The park has a beach with lifeguards and change rooms, so you can leave in dry clothes.
  3. Local stops. The official Ocho Rios page lists several nearby attractions: Dolphin Cove, the Green Grotto Caves, Prospect Plantation with its guided estate tours, Shaw Park Gardens and the Mystic Mountain attractions. All are short drives, and the driver can sequence two of them without a backtrack.
  4. Lunch in Ocho Rios and a drive through the greenery of Fern Gully on the way out, if the route fits.

Bob Marley's mausoleum, also listed in the area, is a longer separate excursion into the hills, so treat it as its own half-day rather than an add-on.

Season, weather and timing the road

Jamaica's north coast is warm all year, so the question is rain rather than temperature. The drier months, roughly December to April, give the most predictable days. In the wetter months mornings are usually the clearer part of the day, which is one more argument for the gate-opening start. After heavy rain the river can run higher and stronger, and the park decides on the day whether and how the climb runs, so ask before you travel if the weather has been wet.

The road has its own calendar. Montego Bay to Ocho Rios traffic is lightest before 8:00, builds through the late morning, and tightens again between 15:00 and 18:00 when day-trippers head back west. If your flight leaves Montego Bay in the evening, we recommend finishing at the falls by midday and treating the return as a fixed commitment, not a buffer you can spend on one more stop. The desk will warn you if a plan looks too tight for a departure.

What to carry, what to leave in the car

You will be barefoot or in water shoes on wet rock. Bring a swimsuit, a towel, a dry set of clothes and a waterproof bag for your phone, and expect to use the lockers shown on the park map. Leave valuables, jewelry and a tablet in the vehicle. The chauffeur stays with the car in the lot. The park lists barrier-free restrooms and entry at its car park, and the viewing decks near the guide point are accessible, but the climb itself is physically demanding and not suitable for everyone. Ask the park about conditions if anyone in your group has mobility limits, and read the waiver before you buy.

For children, the splash pad in the central gardens is a calmer alternative to the full climb. Child, toddler and booster seats for the road legs are available on request when you book, and we recommend telling the desk the ages at booking.

How the booking works

Reservations go through our worldwide desk, which is open around the clock, and the drive itself is done by a licensed, commercially insured Jamaican chauffeur operator chosen from our worldwide directory. You receive one confirmation and one invoice. On this road most parties choose a Luxury SUV for up to six guests, such as a Chevrolet Suburban or GMC Yukon Denali, or an Executive Sprinter for a larger group, all "or similar". The fare appears in the booker before you pay.

Hotel concierges and tourism boards can open a trade account to book chauffeur services for their visitors. The day-hire format is set out on our private tours with driver page. For other Caribbean guides, see Harrison's Cave in Barbados, The Pitons in Saint Lucia, or the full Latin America and Caribbean directory.

How long should I allow?

A realistic visit is two to three hours at the park, plus the road. From Montego Bay the whole day is roughly six to eight hours with a stop in Ocho Rios.

Can I combine the falls with other Ocho Rios stops?

Yes. Dolphin Cove, Green Grotto Caves, Prospect Plantation, Shaw Park Gardens and Mystic Mountain are all listed for the Ocho Rios area. Ask the desk to sequence two or three around your climb.
