Èze is two places with one name. One is a railway halt and a small beach on the Basse Corniche, at sea level. The other is a stone village on a rock above it, with a garden at 429 meters above the Mediterranean. Mixing them up is the reason some visitors turn up at a station and look for a village that is a steep kilometer overhead. An Èze Village private tour with driver starts by choosing the right one, and then deciding how to approach it: by the Moyenne Corniche from Nice, or on foot from the sea.

How do you get to Èze Village by private driver?

Èze Village is about 12 km (7.5 mi) east of central Nice, roughly 25 to 30 minutes by the Moyenne Corniche. The village is pedestrian-only, so the chauffeur parks in a paid car park below the center and you walk up the lanes to the garden.

From Nice airport the run is about 18 km (11 mi), 30 to 40 minutes. From Monaco it is roughly 9 km (5.6 mi), 15 to 25 minutes. Enter your pick-up point in the booker and the fare is shown before you confirm. The route and timing are easy to fit around a Nice or Monaco base, which is why Èze is usually a half-day stop rather than a day of its own.

Two Èzes, one cliff

Èze-sur-Mer (also called Èze Bord de Mer) sits at the coast road and the railway station. The village, Èze Village, sits on the rock above, at the end of a hairpin road. The Nice Côte d'Azur tourist office keeps an office in each; the village office opens, in October 2026, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00 and on Saturday from 9:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00, shifting to shorter winter hours from November, according to the office's own page. The sea-level office is at Place du Général de Gaulle.

Tell the driver which Èze you mean. "Èze Village, Jardin Exotique" is unambiguous. "Èze station" is the sea.

The three coast roads

Between Nice and Menton three roads run along the coast at three heights. The Basse Corniche stays near the water. The Moyenne Corniche climbs through the hills and passes Èze. The Grande Corniche, the highest, runs along the ridge above. For a chauffeur the Moyenne Corniche is the right road for the village: it is slower than the motorway, but it is the road that reaches the village and it gives the views that justify the detour.

Leave Nice by the Moyenne Corniche in the morning and return by the Basse Corniche, or the reverse, and you see two coastlines with one trip. The motorway tunnels are for speed, not for scenery.

Where the car stops

The tourist office describes Èze Village as a pedestrian village. A chauffeur does not drive through its lanes; the car goes to a paid public car park at the edge. The office names two close to its village desk: Place Figuiera and Place de la Colette, both within about 200 meters of the office. They are busy in high season, so the tourist office advises arriving early or using alternative transport. That is where an early start helps.

From the car park the climb is on foot through stepped lanes between stone houses. It is short, but it is uphill and cobbled, so wear flat, grippy shoes. Guests with limited mobility should say so at booking, because the village is not step-free.

Large vehicles are limited by the village roads. A Mercedes-Benz E-Class, S-Class or V-Class is comfortable on the Moyenne Corniche; a Sprinter or a coach needs more planning for the last bends, so ask the desk to confirm the drop-off point for a group.

The Jardin Exotique

At the top of the village, in the ruins of a medieval fortress, is the Jardin Exotique d'Èze. The metropolitan tourist site, explorenicecotedazur.com, gives these details for 2026:

Executive Sprinter van, passenger cabin
Executive Sprinter van, passenger cabin
  • Hours: 9:00 to 18:30 daily from 1 to 31 October; 9:00 to 16:30 from 1 November to 31 December. The garden is closed on 25 December.
  • Admission: a guided tour is listed at 15 euros as of 2026, children under 12 enter free, and the garden is included in the French Riviera Pass. The page does not list a separate price for unguided entry, so check before you go.
  • Address: Rue du Château, 06360 Èze.
  • Altitude: 429 meters above sea level.
  • Time needed: about an hour for an individual visit.
  • Accessibility: the garden is not accessible by wheelchair.

The collection is mostly succulents from several continents, with a strong Central American group, and a themed trail through the fortress ruins. From the summit the view covers the Mediterranean as far as Saint-Tropez, and on a clear day Corsica may appear. Light haze is common in summer, so autumn mornings after rain give the longest views.

The Nietzsche path from the sea

The Chemin de Nietzsche is a steep footpath that links the seaside at Èze-sur-Mer with the village. The regional tourism listing describes it as open all year but not wheelchair-accessible and not recommended for small children, with hiking shoes advised. A guide on the route gives roughly an hour uphill and about 40 minutes downhill.

A chauffeur makes this a good one-way walk. Drive to the sea-level end, walk up (or down), and arrange for the car to meet you at the other end. The path starts opposite the Èze station and, in the village, comes out between the Fragonard shop and the entrance to the Château de la Chèvre d'Or hotel. Going down is easier on the knees if you prefer a shorter effort: take the car up to the village, walk down, and meet the car at the station.

Avoid the path in the heat of the day in July and August. Carry water; there is little shade.

What the driver watches on the Moyenne Corniche

The road to Èze is a mountain road with a coastal view, and it demands attention that a visitor in the rear seat never notices. Tour coaches use it, scooters filter through bends, and the hairpins mean oncoming vehicles sometimes need to wait for each other. A local operator knows where the road widens, where parked cars narrow it and which turn-offs lead to the car parks. In heavy rain or a storm warning the plan can change, so the desk will contact you if a different approach is safer.

If you prefer to drive in one direction only, ask for a one-way transfer to the village and a separate pick-up from the sea-level station after a walk down. Fares for each leg are shown before you confirm.

Seasons and closures worth knowing

The garden's hours shorten sharply after the clocks change, and the tourist office's village desk also moves to winter hours from November. The tourist office lists exceptional closures on 1 November and 11 November 2026, and the garden is shut on 25 December. Summer evenings are long, but the main season crowds peak between June and September. October and the early spring give the best combination of clear air, open doors and room in the lanes. You can read the office's own opening-hours page at the Bureau d'Èze Village listing.

Choosing the hour

  • Before 10:00: the car parks have space, the lanes are quiet and the garden is almost empty. This is the best slot for photography and for guests with mobility concerns.
  • 11:00 to 15:00: coach tours arrive. The lanes are narrow, so crowds feel larger than they are.
  • After 16:00 in summer: the heat eases and the light warms the stone. In winter the garden closes at 16:30, so afternoon visits are short.

Dinner at one of the village terraces is a classic end to the day, but the return drive is on narrow bends in the dark, and a chauffeur removes the question of who drives after wine. Mobile signal can be weak at the top of the village, so agree the pick-up time and car park before you climb.

If the day turns overcast or windy, do not write Èze off. Stone lanes hold soft light well, and the village is pleasant for a slow walk when cloud hides the sea. The garden's views are what suffer, so save that for a clear morning and give a grey day to the lanes, a long lunch and the drive on to Monaco. The chauffeur can watch the forecast and the traffic on the Moyenne Corniche and suggest swapping the order of your stops.

An Èze half day from Nice or Monaco

A simple order:

  1. 09:00. Leave Nice by the Moyenne Corniche. Park below the village by 09:30.
  2. 09:30 to 12:00. Lanes, the garden at opening and coffee.
  3. 12:30. Drive down to Monaco, about 9 km (5.6 mi), 15 to 25 minutes.
  4. 13:00 to 15:00. Lunch in Monaco, then the Casino; the Monte-Carlo Casino guide explains the morning visit and the afternoon rules.
  5. 16:00. Return to Nice along the coast.

Or go the other way: start with the walk on the Promenade des Anglais, then climb to Èze for the afternoon. For guests using Cannes as a base, the La Croisette guide covers the city, and Èze is about an hour east along the A8 and the coast roads. The Monaco Grand Prix week is the one time to avoid this road; see the Monaco Grand Prix guide.

Lines 82 and 112 run from Nice according to the tourist office, and line 83 runs from Beaulieu-sur-Mer and serves the Èze railway station. The bus is the better choice for a lone traveler with no luggage and a flexible day. A car pays for itself when you add Monaco or a restaurant dinner.

Accessibility, shoes and small print

Èze is stepped and cobbled. The garden is not accessible by wheelchair, according to the metropolitan tourist site, and the Nietzsche path is a mountain footpath. Guests with mobility needs can still enjoy the setting by taking the car to the car park, walking a short distance in the lower lanes and having lunch on a terrace near the entrance. Say so when you book and the driver will pick the closest practical stop.

Practical notes: bring a light layer, since the wind rises on the rock; avoid strong perfume near the garden; and carry the printed or saved garden ticket, because mobile data can be patchy at the top. Request child seats when you book.

For the wider Riviera plan read the Nice and Monaco chauffeur service page, the Nice Côte d'Azur private aviation guide if you arrive by jet, and the private tours with driver overview. Operators in this region are listed in the Europe directory. More local information is at the Èze tourist office.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Èze Village from Nice?

About 12 km (7.5 mi) east of central Nice, which takes roughly 25 to 30 minutes by the Moyenne Corniche. From Nice airport allow 30 to 40 minutes. From Monaco it is about 15 to 25 minutes.

Can a car drive into Èze Village?

No. The village is pedestrian-only. A chauffeur uses a paid car park near the center, such as Place Figuiera or Place de la Colette, and you walk up the lanes.

What are the Jardin Exotique d'Èze opening hours?

For 2026 the metropolitan tourist site lists 9:00 to 18:30 daily from 1 to 31 October and 9:00 to 16:30 from 1 November to 31 December, closed on 25 December. Check the site before you travel.

How long should I spend in Èze?

About an hour for the garden and one to two hours for the lanes and lunch. A half day including the drive from Nice is comfortable.

Is the Jardin Exotique wheelchair accessible?

No. The metropolitan tourist site states that the garden is not accessible in a wheelchair, and the village is stepped. Discuss options with the desk before you book.

How long is the Nietzsche path?

A guide on the route gives about an hour uphill and about 40 minutes downhill. It is a steep footpath, open all year, with hiking shoes advised and not recommended for small children.

Is Èze better with a driver or by bus?

For one traveler with a flexible day the bus is the lowest in cost. A driver is better with luggage, a group, a dinner in the village or a link to Monaco on the same day.

Can I visit Èze and Monaco on the same day?

Yes. Èze to Monaco is about 9 km (5.6 mi), 15 to 25 minutes. A morning in the village and an afternoon in Monte Carlo is a standard plan.

Where should I tell the driver to meet me after the walk?

Agree one named car park, Place Figuiera or Place de la Colette, before you set off, and message the desk if your plan changes. Mobile signal can be weak at the top of the village, so a fixed meeting point and time work better than a call from the lanes.
