Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y, and Bellagio sits exactly at the fork, on the promontory that separates the western arm toward Como from the eastern arm toward Lecco. That position explains everything practical about a Lake Como and Bellagio private tour with a driver: the lake is long and narrow, the best roads follow the shoreline with little room to pass, and the quickest way between two villages is often a boat rather than a car. A chauffeur who knows which shore to take, and when to switch to a ferry, turns a tiring drive into a loop.

This guide is for travelers arriving from Milan or Malpensa who want a day or a transfer on the lake, or a base in a lakeside hotel. When you know the date, you can check your fare for the road leg and tell the desk where your boat tickets or villa slots fall.

How do you get to Bellagio from Milan by car?

Bellagio is about 75 to 80 km (47 to 50 miles) north of central Milan and takes roughly 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours by road, longer on summer weekends. From Milan Malpensa the drive is about 80 to 90 km (50 to 56 miles). The last stretch is a narrow lakeside road, and Bellagio's centre restricts traffic.

Two routes are normal. The first takes the SS36 expressway from Milan toward Lecco and then follows the lakeside road along the eastern shore of the Lecco arm to Bellagio. The second goes to Como and follows the Strada Lariana (SS583) along the eastern shore of the Como arm, which is the more scenic and the slower of the two. The chauffeur chooses between them according to traffic, which can build around Como on weekday evenings and at weekends. LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com runs a 24/7 booking desk, and every ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur operator from our worldwide directory, so the person at the wheel drives these roads regularly.

Which airport and which city page

Most international visitors fly into Milan. Milan Malpensa is the nearest major airport to the lake: roughly 50 km (31 miles) from Como and 80 to 90 km (50 to 56 miles) from Bellagio. Flights are tracked on every airport pickup, and international arrivals get 60 minutes of free waiting after landing (30 minutes domestic). The desk can add a name-board meet-and-greet inside arrivals if you want one.

If you are staying in Milan first, the Milan chauffeur service page explains the city side, and two of the city's most popular visits sit close to a lake day: the Milan Cathedral and The Last Supper. Many travelers combine them with a lake day on different mornings, because the Last Supper's timed slot is fixed in advance and the lake is flexible.

The shape of the lake in practice

You will hear four place names constantly. Como is the city at the southern tip of the western arm, with the cathedral, the lakefront and the funicular up to Brunate. Bellagio is the village at the fork. Varenna faces Bellagio across the water on the eastern shore, a short ferry hop away. Tremezzo and Menaggio lie opposite on the western shore, with Cadenabbia a few minutes from Menaggio by road.

The reason this matters: Bellagio to Varenna, Cadenabbia and Menaggio are the only crossings where cars can ride the ferry, according to the operator's own notes. Elsewhere on the lake the boats take passengers only, so a car must drive around.

The ferries, in detail

The lake's public boat and ferry service is run by Navigazione Laghi, and the timetable pages are the only authoritative source. They list three Lake Como timetables: Como to Colico by ship and fast service, Bellagio to Lecco by ship, and the Bellagio–Cadenabbia–Varenna–Menaggio ferry with separate weekday and Sunday or holiday schedules. The operator's autumn timetable is in force from 5 October to 1 November 2026, and the previous summer one ran to 4 October, so the choice of sailings is smaller now than in July.

Practical notes from the operator: arrive about 20 minutes before departure, buy tickets at the dock offices where they exist or on board where there is no office, and expect bad weather or rough water to suspend routes. Events such as sailing regattas can also stop service, with replacement buses.

Our desk can plan the car around the sailings, but we cannot book the boats. The tickets are bought at the dock or from the operator, and the chauffeur simply times the pickup to the arrival.

Bellagio: parking, traffic and the village itself

Bellagio's centre is a limited traffic zone, enforced by cameras, and in general only residents, taxis and public transport are allowed in. Car parks sit at the edge of the village. In practice the chauffeur stops in the permitted area, you walk the last stretch, and the car waits in the designated spot or returns at a time you agree. Hotels sometimes register guests' number plates for access, so mention the hotel name at booking and ask the hotel what it can arrange.

The village is a maze of stepped lanes running down to the waterfront. Allow time for the steps and carry luggage you can lift. The best use of an hour is a walk along the lakefront and up one of the stepped lanes, then lunch with a view across to the mountains.

Villa Carlotta, Villa del Balbianello and the western shore

The villas are the other half of a Lake Como day, and they are on the western shore, across the water from Bellagio.

Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo has gardens and an art collection; the official site lists hours of 10:00 to 19:00 with the last ticket at 18:00 and refers to its 2026 opening season, so check which months are open before planning a late-autumn visit.

Villa del Balbianello near Lenno is run by the FAI, Italy's national trust. It stands on a wooded promontory and is reached by a footpath from Lenno or by boat, not by car. The FAI page links to the ticket shop; confirm opening days and boat access there, because both are seasonal.

If you want both villas in a day, plan the order by boat sailings rather than by distance, and book the timed slots in advance. A chauffeur can then drive the western shore road between the two in about half an hour each way depending on traffic.

A loop from Milan that returns by a different shore

This is the routing we would suggest for a full day with a driver, starting from a Milan hotel.

  1. Milan to Como. About 50 km (31 miles), 45 to 70 minutes. Time in Como for the lakefront and, if you like, the funicular.
  2. Como to Bellagio along the Strada Lariana. Slow and scenic; allow roughly an hour or more.
  3. Bellagio on foot. Lunch and the lanes.
  4. Ferry Bellagio to Varenna. A short crossing on the car ferry, with the car aboard, and a stop in Varenna.
  5. Varenna to Milan. Back on the eastern side via Lecco and the SS36, about 75 km (47 miles), in roughly an hour and a half.

If you prefer the villas, replace step 3 and 4 with a ferry to Tremezzo or Cadenabbia and the western road. For a chauffeured day that includes more than one lake, the Lake Garda guide covers the next lake east, about 130 km (80 miles) from Milan. For the whole picture, see private tours with a driver and the Europe directory.

Como and Varenna as stops of their own

Como rewards a slower hour than most day trippers give it. The lakefront promenade, the cathedral and the old town grid sit a short walk from the boat landings, and a funicular climbs the hillside to Brunate for a view back over the lake. Parking in the centre is limited, so the chauffeur drops you near the lakefront and meets you where you agree.

A grand railway station hall
A grand railway station hall

Varenna is the easier of the two eastern stops for travelers with luggage, because it has a railway station on the Milan to Tirano line and a ferry landing within a few minutes of each other. It is a small, steep village of pastel houses; allow an hour for the walk down to the water and a coffee. If you end the day here, the road back to Milan along the eastern shore is the straighter of the two.

Straight from Malpensa to a lake hotel

For a first night on the lake after a long flight, the simplest plan is a direct transfer. From Malpensa to Como is about 50 km (31 miles) and takes under an hour in light traffic; Bellagio takes 1 hour 30 minutes or more. Ask the desk to set the vehicle to your party: an Executive Sedan or First Class Sedan for up to three passengers, a Luxury SUV for up to six, or an Executive Sprinter for larger groups. Lakeside hotel roads are narrow, so for big parties the chauffeur may stop at a nearby point and a hotel porter completes the last stretch.

Best time to go

Spring and early autumn give the best balance of open villas, running ferries and manageable crowds. July and August bring traffic on the lakeside roads and long queues for the car ferry at weekends. From November most villas close for the winter and the ferry timetable shrinks, and a winter day on the lake is quiet, misty and beautiful for travelers who do not need the gardens. Whatever the month, leave Milan early: the best light and the least traffic are before 10:00.

The train and boat is the lowest-cost and arguably the most enjoyable way to arrive if you travel light and have no schedule. The chauffeur is better for luggage, for a party of four to six in a Luxury SUV, for a group in an Executive Sprinter, or for a day that mixes villas and a long lunch.

What to wear and bring

Bring shoes that handle steps and wet stone, a light waterproof jacket, and a layer for the boat, which is cooler than the shore. Villas have dress expectations typical of gardens and houses, but nothing formal. If you are heading to a restaurant or hotel with a dress code, mention it to the desk and the chauffeur will leave time for a change.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Bellagio from Milan by car?

About 75 to 80 km (47 to 50 miles), roughly 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. From Milan Malpensa Airport the distance is about 80 to 90 km (50 to 56 miles). Summer weekends are slower, particularly near Como and on the lakeside road.

Can cars drive into Bellagio?

Only a limited number. The centre is a traffic-limited zone enforced by cameras, and entry is generally for residents, taxis and public transport. A chauffeur stops at the permitted point at the edge of the village and you walk the last stretch.

Do car ferries run on Lake Como?

Yes, between Bellagio, Varenna, Cadenabbia and Menaggio, according to the operator, Navigazione Laghi. Other routes carry passengers only. Timetables change by season, so check the operator's site before you plan a loop.

Can I do Lake Como as a day trip from Milan with a driver?

Yes. A loop from Milan through Como and Bellagio and back through Varenna and Lecco fits a day with time for lunch. Start before 09:00 for the best traffic.

Are Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello open all year?

No. Both are seasonal. Villa Carlotta lists a 2026 opening season on its site, and Villa del Balbianello is run by the FAI with its own calendar. Check each official page for the month you travel.

Is it better to stay in Bellagio or Como?

Bellagio is quieter in the evening and more picturesque, but the traffic-limited centre complicates luggage. Como is a real city with a railway station and easier road access, and it works well as a first night.

Do you offer child seats for the lake roads?

Yes. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking, which matters on winding lakeside roads.

What if the boat I planned to take is cancelled?

Bad weather can suspend routes, as the operator notes. Tell the desk your plan; the chauffeur can drive around the lake instead, which takes longer but keeps the day on track.
