Carcassonne has two halves. Up on the hill is the Cité, a double ring of walls and towers that looks, from the road, like the illustration of a fairy tale. Down by the river is the Bastide Saint-Louis, the working town with the station, the market squares and the Canal du Midi. Most first-time visitors confuse the two, park in the wrong one and arrive at the walls tired. A carcassonne private tour with driver fixes that: the chauffeur brings you to the right gate, you walk in, and the car is waiting when you come out.

For anyone coming by private car, this page answers how to get to Carcassonne by car from Toulouse and its airport, where the car can wait near the walls, what the castle and ramparts ticket involves, and how a day with the Cathar castles of Lastours fits together.

How far is Carcassonne from Toulouse airport by car?

Carcassonne is about 103 km (64 miles) from Toulouse-Blagnac airport, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes on the A61 motorway. From Toulouse city center it is about 96 km (60 miles), around an hour. Carcassonne also has its own small airport, about 3 km from the center.

The local tourist authority lists the main driving times into the Cité: about an hour from Toulouse by the A61 (exit 23) and the D6113, about an hour from Narbonne on the D6113, an hour and a quarter from Perpignan, and about two hours from Montpellier via the A9 and the A61 (exit 24). Follow signs for "La Cité" toward the citadel. Toll charges apply on the A61.

Toulouse is the usual gateway for visitors flying in from Paris or London, while Carcassonne's own airport, Salvaza, is served mainly by Ryanair. There is no Toulouse or Carcassonne page in our directory yet, so start from the airports hub and the Europe directory. If you are connecting through the capital, the Paris Charles de Gaulle page explains the pickup process there.

What is the Cité de Carcassonne?

It is a medieval fortified city, restored and lived in, with narrow streets inside the walls, shops, restaurants and a château, the Château Comtal, at its center. The ramparts can be walked on a ticketed circuit. The Cité is UNESCO-listed and is one of the most visited places in the south of France.

The key distinction for planning: walking the streets of the Cité costs nothing, while the Château Comtal and the ramparts are ticketed. Many visitors only walk the lanes, have lunch and leave, and that is a valid half day. If you want the history, the castle and ramparts take the better part of two hours.

Where can the car stop near the Cité?

The tourism office publishes the car parks for the Cité, all paid in the daytime:

  • P0, Narbonnaise Gate, the closest. The tourist office lists up to two hours at 1 euro per 15 minutes and up to 12 hours at 0.50 euros per 45 minutes, with a fixed night price of 3 euros from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • P1, Narbonnaise Gate, with the same daytime rates and free overnight. Its address is Chemin de Montlegun, about 500 m from the gate, according to the Grand Carcassonne site, which advises against leaving a car there at night.
  • P2, Aude Gate, the same rates, free overnight.
  • Pont Neuf, 30 minutes free then paid, a longer walk to the walls.

Group drop-off is at the "stop minute" bay by the Narbonnaise Gate from September to June. In July and August, drop-off at the gate is not allowed, and groups must park directly in P1. The official pages publish no rules for private vehicles inside the walls. In practice the chauffeur drops you at the Narbonnaise Gate and parks, and the walk in is only a few minutes. These rates are public figures dated 2026; confirm them at the machine.

For guests who find the hill difficult, say so at booking. The walk from the gate into the Cité is a slope on cobbles, and a small tourist train runs between the lower town and the Cité from June to September for a fee per trip, according to the tourism office. City bus lines 2, 3 and 4 also serve the area.

Castle and ramparts: tickets and hours

The Château Comtal and the ramparts are run by France's national monuments body. For the period 1 October to 24 December 2026 and 26 to 31 December, the tourism office lists them as open daily from 9:30 to 17:00. The tourism office shows adult prices that vary between 13 and 19 euros, and the page lists ticket booking online through the national monuments site. Guided tours, lectures or audio guides are available subject to booking, in French, English, Spanish and Italian. The monument is listed as wheelchair accessible.

The castle's own page shows a 13 euro adult price as of 2026, with free entry for visitors under 26, so check which season rate applies to your date. Do not rely on a reseller for the ticket: buy from the castle's official site or its ticketing portal.

A licensed guide is a separate professional from your chauffeur. If you want a guided walk of the walls, book it in advance through the castle's visit program or the tourist office.

The lower town and the Canal du Midi

The Bastide Saint-Louis, the lower town laid out on a grid, is the part of Carcassonne where people live and shop. It has a station, markets and cafés, and it is where most visitors with a hotel will actually sleep. The Canal du Midi runs along its edge and is a calm contrast to the fortress above; a short walk by the water after the castle is a good way to end a hot afternoon. The chauffeur can drop you at the Cité and collect you in the lower town, saving the walk back up the hill.

If you want the best view of the walls rather than the view from inside them, ask the driver to stop on the far side of the river, where the whole silhouette of the Cité rises above the old bridge. It is the photograph on every postcard, and it works best in the early morning or just before dusk.

Lastours and the Cathar castles

The Cathar castles are a separate subject from the Cité, and Lastours is the easiest introduction from Carcassonne. Sources place it roughly 12 to 18 km from the city, so a 15 km (9 miles), 20-minute drive is a fair planning figure. The site is a group of ruined hilltop fortresses, reached by footpaths from the village, and a viewpoint gives a look at all of them together. Wear proper shoes, because the paths are steep and rocky, and check the opening arrangements on the site's own page for your date.

This is the part of the day where a chauffeur adds the most. Cathar country is made of small roads and long views, and distances between sites are short but the routes are not obvious. If you want to go farther, the Aude valley has more castles and villages, but each one adds an hour or more, so treat Lastours as the single add-on for a one-day trip.

Best day and time of year

Carcassonne is crowded in July and August, when the lanes inside the walls are packed and the heat on the ramparts is severe. Spring and early autumn are the best seasons, with mild temperatures and better light on the stone. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, though the days are short and the castle closes at 17:00. Early morning and evening are the best times for photographs, when the walls turn gold and the crowds have gone.

How long to allow

Allow two hours for the castle and ramparts, another hour for the lanes and a lunch, and more if you add a visit to the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire inside the walls or a stroll in the lower town. A half day is enough for the Cité alone. The full day adds a drive to the Cathar castles at Lastours, about 15 km (9 miles) to the north, or a stop on the Canal du Midi.

The train is a real alternative: the station is about 2 km from the Cité, roughly 30 minutes on foot, or a short bus ride. If you are traveling alone and staying in the lower town, the train and a walk is the lowest-cost and most direct. The chauffeur is best when you arrive by air with luggage, travel with a group, or want to add Lastours. Pick the vehicle by party size and luggage; the fleet page lists the sedan, SUV and Sprinter classes, with the exact model confirmed at booking.

A chauffeured day

  1. 8:30 Pickup at Toulouse airport or your hotel. Drive about an hour.
  2. 9:45 Arrive at the Narbonnaise Gate; park in P0 or P1.
  3. 10:00 Walk into the Cité; castle and ramparts, with a ticket booked online.
  4. 12:30 Lunch inside the walls. Cassoulet is the local dish; book the table.
  5. 14:30 Drive to Lastours, about 15 km north, for the four Cathar castles and the viewpoint.
  6. 16:30 Return to Carcassonne or continue to Toulouse.
  7. 18:00 Arrive at the airport or hotel.

If the south of France is your theme, the Roman and papal sites to the east make a natural second trip: the Pont du Gard and the Palais des Papes in Avignon are each a long day's drive away, so most guests make them a separate trip. For other regions see our private tours with driver page.

Accessibility and what to wear

The Cité is built on a hill, with cobbled lanes and steps in many places. The castle is listed as wheelchair accessible and the tourism office also notes label for hearing and mental disabilities and sign language among spoken languages, but the ramparts involve stairs. Wear flat, grippy shoes. Summer shade is limited, so bring water and a hat. Dogs are common in the Cité; check each venue's rules.
