The Cotai Strip is not a street you stroll down. It is a corridor of large resort complexes built on reclaimed land between the islands of Taipa and Coloane, and almost everything in it is a building you enter from a covered driveway. That makes it one of the friendliest places in Asia for a private car, and one of the hardest to explore on foot in the heat. A Cotai Strip private tour with driver is mostly about three things: how you arrive, which entrance each resort expects you to use, and what happens when you cross the border from Hong Kong.

This guide covers the approach from Macau International Airport, from the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and from the ferry terminals, and then the practicalities once you are inside Cotai: light rail, show timings, etiquette and a chauffeured day.

How do you get to the Cotai Strip by car from the airport or Hong Kong?

Macau International Airport is only about 4 km (2.5 miles) from the Cotai Strip, typically 10 to 15 minutes by car. From Hong Kong, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge covers about 42 km (26 miles) between Hong Kong Port and Macao Port in roughly 40 minutes, before border formalities and the short run on to Cotai.

The 42 km and 40-minute figures are from the bridge's official site. The airport distance and the final run to Cotai are approximate and depend on traffic, and the border clearance on each side is not included in any published road time. Treat a Hong Kong to Cotai journey as a two-hour block rather than a one-hour drive.

What the Cotai Strip is, and what it is not

Cotai is the reclaimed area linking Taipa and Coloane, and the Strip is the cluster of integrated resorts along it. The complexes include the Venetian Macao, the Parisian, Studio City, City of Dreams, Galaxy Macau, Wynn Palace and MGM Cotai, among others. Each one combines hotels, a casino, restaurants, shopping and entertainment under one roof, and each has its own driveway, valet and taxi rank.

The point for a visitor is that the buildings are the destination. The roads between them are wide and fast, there is little to see from the pavement and the heat in summer is real. Moving between resorts by car or rail, not on foot, is the normal pattern. For Macau's historic center on the peninsula, a different part of the city, plan a separate half-day.

From Macau International Airport

The airport stands in Taipa, next to Cotai. The official airport site lists its own transport products, including an express link service, a limousine service and meet-and-greet, and it also lists public car parks for private cars. The airport is expanding on reclaimed land, and the site notes adjustments to night flight schedules from late October 2026, so check Macau International Airport for the current timetable if you land at night.

A pre-arranged chauffeur adds flight tracking, 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing and a vehicle sized to your party and bags. The desk confirms the exact pickup point. If you hold a reservation at a resort, tell us the hotel's name and the entrance you were told to use, since the large complexes each have more than one.

Crossing from Hong Kong: the honest version

Many visitors reach Cotai from Hong Kong International Airport, which stands on Lantau beside the bridge's Hong Kong Port. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is described on its official site as a 55 km system with a 12 km Hong Kong Link Road, a 29.6 km main bridge and a 13.4 km Zhuhai Link Road. It operates 24 hours a day. Hong Kong Port to Macao Port is about 42 km and roughly 40 minutes, with Zhuhai also on the route.

Here is the part that is easy to overlook. The Hong Kong government has explained that cross-boundary vehicles using the bridge are subject to a quota system, with exemptions that include cross-boundary shuttle buses. Its reply to the Legislative Council, published on info.gov.hk, describes the permits quota holders need. In practice, a private car cannot simply be sent across because it is available. The vehicle must hold the right permissions, and many visitors cross on a shuttle bus between the ports and take a car on the Macau side.

For that reason, the plan for a Hong Kong to Cotai trip depends on what the operator can field. The two usual versions are a through car with the right permits, or a pickup at the Hong Kong airport followed by a transfer at the border and a second car waiting in Macau. The desk confirms which is available and quotes one fixed fare before you book. Allow time for passport control at both ports. The Hong Kong chauffeur service page and our Hong Kong International Airport page explain the Hong Kong end.

Entry rules for Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China are separate and depend on your passport. Check each before you book, starting with the Macao Government Tourism Office.

From the ferry terminals, the peninsula and Hengqin

Ferries from Hong Kong arrive at the Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal on the peninsula and at the Taipa Ferry Terminal. The Taipa terminal is a short drive from Cotai, around 3 km (2 miles), and is the better choice if you are staying on the Strip. The peninsula is about 8 km (5 miles) from Cotai, usually 15 to 30 minutes by car depending on the bridge and the time of day.

An airport terminal

Hengqin, the island across the border to the west, connects to Cotai by a short rail link and by road. The official light rail site shows a Hengqin line running from Lotus Station, a transfer point with the Taipa line, with a journey of about two minutes. That matters if your plans include the mainland side, but border formalities apply and a separate vehicle may be needed.

Where the car goes: entrances and drop-offs

Each resort has a covered drive-up for cars and taxis, and a separate area for tour buses and shuttles. A chauffeur is allowed to use the guest driveway, which is why you can be dropped at the lobby door in the rain or heat. Ask the hotel which entrance to use if you are meeting someone or going to a specific venue, since the larger resorts have several.

Three small suggestions:

  • Give the desk the exact destination. "The Venetian" is a resort with several entrances and multiple car parks; the hotel name, tower or venue is better.
  • Agree the pickup point. Departures from the lobby fill up around show times and on weekends, so choose a quieter exit or a side entrance if one exists.
  • Keep the driver's number handy. Large complexes are easy to get lost in, and a text saves you ten minutes.

Light rail or car?

Macau's light rapid transit is a real option within Cotai. The operator's route page lists the Taipa line with stations including Cotai East and Cotai West, and it also serves the airport and the Taipa Ferry Terminal. Service runs from 06:30 to 23:15 Monday to Thursday and from 06:30 to 23:59 on Fridays to Sundays and public holidays, with trains about every 5 to 10 minutes, and a full-line journey of about 28 minutes, according to the Macau Light Rapid Transit site. The Hengqin line runs about every six minutes.

For a traveler with a light bag and a day to spare, the train is the lowest-cost and quite adequate way to hop between stations near the resorts. A car is the better choice with luggage, with children or older relatives, in the heat, or when the schedule is fixed, for example a show at 8 pm and a late flight. Many resorts also run their own shuttles from the border gates and ferry terminals, so ask your hotel before you assume you need a taxi.

Shows, attractions and timing

The resorts keep their own schedules and ticketing, and these change often, so use each resort's site to confirm. One example: the Venetian Macao's site lists teamLab SuperNature Macao as open daily from 11:00 to 19:00, with last entry at 18:15. Treat that as an example of the sort of detail that varies, and check the date you plan to go.

Most visitors build a Cotai day around one or two anchors, such as a show, a visit to a specific resort, a long lunch or a spa, and let the car handle the transfers. Midweek is the quietest. Friday evening, Saturday and public holidays bring the heaviest traffic and the longest queues at drive-ups. Chinese holiday periods, when large numbers of visitors cross the border, are the slowest of all, and a booking made well ahead saves a great deal of waiting.

Casino floors: what to expect

Gaming floors have their own rules. There are minimum ages, identification requirements and limits on photography and on what you can carry, and the operators and the regulator set them, not us. Check the resort's site before you plan to enter, carry your passport, and ask the hotel if anyone in your group is under the age limit. The chauffeur waits outside and does not enter the casino.

Our drivers do not photograph clients or post about trips. If you are traveling privately, NDAs are signed on request, and alias bookings are available.

A chauffeured day in Macau and Hong Kong

A full day that links two cities needs a firm border plan. One workable pattern:

  1. 08:00 Pickup in Hong Kong, a stop at the airport if you are flying in, then the bridge.
  2. 10:30 Arrive in Macau after the border, transfer to the local car and head to your first resort.
  3. 12:00 Lunch at a resort or in Taipa Village.
  4. 14:00 Free time on the Strip, with the car at an agreed point.
  5. 18:30 Early dinner, then a show or an evening walk through the resort.
  6. 21:00 Return to the border, with the Hong Kong car waiting on the far side.

Allow extra time on the return. Border queues vary, and the last bridge shuttles and ferries have their own cut-offs.

If you are staying in Hong Kong, three of our guides fit naturally into the same trip: Victoria Peak for the skyline, the Tsim Sha Tsui Harbourfront for the evening light show and the Tian Tan Buddha on Lantau, which is near the airport and the bridge. For another skyline resort complex, see Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. Our private tours with driver page explains day bookings, the Asia-Pacific directory lists every city we cover and the tourist offices page explains how tourism boards can book for their visitors through a trade account.

Typhoons, weather and closures

The Pearl River Delta is typhoon territory. When a strong signal is raised, ferries, bridge shuttles and some attractions can suspend service, and flights are disrupted. Heavy summer rain and heat are also common. If a typhoon is forecast for your dates, tell the desk so it can plan the border crossing around the weather and rebook rather than leave you at a closed gate.

The lower-cost options are good ones. The light rail is clean and frequent, and a resort shuttle can be the lowest-cost option if your hotel runs one. The chauffeur wins where bags, a party or a fixed deadline matter, and where the Hong Kong end and the Macau end need one plan. Which Cotai resort should I choose?

That depends on what you want: shows, shopping, dining or a quieter stay. The Strip includes the Venetian Macao, the Parisian, Studio City, City of Dreams, Galaxy Macau, Wynn Palace and MGM Cotai, and each resort's site has current details.

Do I need a visa for Macau?

It depends on your passport. Check the Macao Government Tourism Office and your nearest Chinese consulate before booking.

Can I visit casinos with children?

Gaming floors have minimum-age rules set by the operators and regulator. Check the resort's site, and plan other activities for younger family members.
