Tivoli Gardens does not run on a year-round schedule. It opens for a summer season, closes in late September, reopens for a short Halloween period, closes again, and returns in mid-November for Christmas. Anyone arriving in Copenhagen in the gaps finds a locked gate. That makes the calendar the first thing to check, and the car comes second.

How do you get to Tivoli Gardens by car from Copenhagen Airport?

Tivoli Gardens private tour with a driver is a short trip: Copenhagen Airport is about 8 to 10 km (5 to 6 miles) from the city center, and the drive to Tivoli takes roughly 15 to 25 minutes. The park sits beside Copenhagen Central Station, with entrances on Vesterbrogade and Bernstorffsgade.

The airport is on the island of Amager, south-east of the center, and the road in runs through the city's southern edge. A taxi takes around 20 minutes in normal traffic, while the M2 metro reaches the center in about 13 to 14 minutes, so the chauffeur's advantage on this leg is door-to-door convenience, not speed. It matters most for families with luggage and car seats, for late arrivals, and for visitors who want the car to carry on to a hotel after the park.

The park is a few steps from Copenhagen Central Station and the Vesterport S-train station, both under five minutes' walk according to Tivoli's own information. The driver stops at the closest legal point near the entrance you choose, and you tell the desk when you are heading out, so the car comes to you rather than idling near the gate.

The Tivoli calendar, and what October means

Tivoli's own site lists the Halloween season as 2 October to 1 November. In 2026 the summer season ended in September, and press coverage describes Halloween opening daily from 11:00, with the rides running during the event. Christmas follows from mid-November, with reports giving 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 and a closure on 24 December. Some pages still show last year's Christmas dates, so check the calendar on tivoli.dk before you commit.

That calendar has a practical consequence for a Copenhagen trip planned around the park. A visit between about 2 November and mid-November meets a closed garden. A visit in the second half of October meets crowds of local families in costume, the park decorated with pumpkins, and later dusk. Hours differ by day, and Tivoli has closed on certain holidays in previous seasons.

If your dates fall in a gap, the other sights in this guide, and the walk to Nyhavn described below, give you a day that does not depend on the gate.

Two entrances and the walk from the car

The official instruction is to enter through the main entrance at Vesterbrogade 3 or through the Central Station entrance on Bernstorffsgade. Both are reported to be step-free. Exits for people leaving mid-day include the turnstiles by the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek museum and the Tivoli Castle, and a re-entry stamp is available at the Food Hall exit, though not during major events.

For evening concerts and shows at the Glass Hall Theatre or the Concert Hall out of season, Tivoli directs visitors to H.C. Andersens Boulevard 26 rather than the main gate. If your plan includes a performance, give the desk the venue, not just the word Tivoli, so the driver heads for the right side of the block.

Two tips follow. Choose the entrance by where you want to start: Bernstorffsgade is quicker if you are coming from the station, while Vesterbrogade is the main front. And if the party splits, with some going in early and others arriving later, agree a meeting point inside before you separate, because the park is larger than it looks on the map.

Tickets and passes, without the prices

Tivoli sells an entrance and ride pass as a combined package, ride passes separately, and a Tivoli Pass for repeat visitors. During Halloween, events are included with entry, and a Scary House Combo gives access to both scary houses with one ride in each. Tickets are sold through shop.tivoli.dk. We do not print prices because they change and vary by day.

The decision most visitors face is whether to buy rides at all. Families with children usually do. Adults who come for the atmosphere, the gardens and the dinner may find that entrance alone is enough. The official site's ticket pages explain the differences, and it is worth reading them before you reach the gate.

Parking, if you are driving yourself, is sold through the park with a discount at nearby Q-Park garages. With a chauffeur you do not need a garage. The driver can wait in a legal place nearby and return when you call.

What is worth seeing inside

The park opened on 15 August 1843, and Hans Christian Andersen was among its early visitors, finding inspiration there for a story. Tivoli's own history page records that Walt Disney visited the gardens before and after Disneyland opened in California in 1955, hoping to understand what made the place so enchanting.

A few features carry the most history. The wooden roller coaster, Rutschebanen, opened in 1914 and is one of the oldest wooden coasters still operating, one of only seven in the world with a brakeman on each train. The Pantomime Theatre, built in 1874 in a Chinese style with a fan-shaped curtain and a peacock motif, is the oldest surviving building in the park. Tivoli Lake dates from 1887, when the western ramparts of Copenhagen's fortifications were demolished, and it had been part of the city's moat.

Evening is when the park changes. The lights come on, and in Halloween season the decorations are at their densest. Dinner inside is part of the experience for many visitors, and a table booked in advance saves a wait.

An October evening at Tivoli, hour by hour

Dusk in Copenhagen falls around 18:00 in mid-October and earlier by the end of the month, so the best plan starts in the afternoon and lets the park change around you. Arrive at the gate between 15:00 and 16:00. Spend the first hour on the gardens and the lake while there is still daylight, and use the next hour for rides or the scary houses if your party wants them, when queues are shorter than at the evening peak.

Around dusk the lights come on and the park looks its best. Eat early or book ahead, because tables fill on Halloween weekends. Leave the last hour for the Pantomime Theatre area and the lake, which are quieter after the rides close. Message the desk 15 minutes before you want the car, and the driver will be at the entrance you used or at the other one if the crowd makes that easier.

Children tire sooner than adults expect after a day of travel. If you are arriving from a long flight, treat Tivoli as an evening plan after a rest at the hotel, not as something to do straight from the airport.

Plan for the weather as seriously as for the ride queues. October in Copenhagen can bring rain and wind off the water, and most of the park is outdoors, so waterproof jackets, hats and gloves belong in the day bag. The car is a useful dry base: leave spare layers, a stroller you do not need and any afternoon shopping in the vehicle and ask the driver to hold them until you leave. If rain arrives while you are inside, tell the desk and the chauffeur can move closer to the exit you plan to use. Families with small children often find that a short break in the warm car, with a snack and dry socks, rescues the evening.

Next door: City Hall Square and the Glyptotek

Tivoli's boundary touches two other stops. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, an art and sculpture museum, shares a wall with the park, and the park even has an exit at its turnstiles. City Hall Square and the pedestrian street Strøget begin a few minutes' walk from the Vesterbrogade gate. For a day with a gap before the park opens in the afternoon, the museum or a walk along Strøget fills the time without needing the car. The driver can then collect you from the park gate in the evening, and your bags stay in the vehicle meanwhile.

The M2 is quick, cheap and perfectly good if you travel light. On a short airport trip, we say so plainly. The car makes sense when you carry bags, travel with small children, arrive late at night, or want one vehicle to cover the airport, the park and the hotel.

Low-emission zone and parking rules

Copenhagen's environmental zone applies to older diesel vehicles, including cars, vans, trucks and buses, and since 1 March 2025 it has covered the whole municipality. It is enforced by cameras reading license plates. The rule targets older vehicles without particulate filters, and a late-model chauffeur vehicle is not the target. If you are considering renting a car for the trip, ask the rental company how it complies.

Parking near Tivoli is mostly in garages, and prepaid parking through the park offers a discount. The chauffeur does not need any of it. In the busiest weeks, such as Halloween weekends and the opening of the Christmas season, stopping on the streets around the gate is harder, and the driver may use a side street a few minutes away.

Pairing Tivoli with Nyhavn and the old center

Tivoli sits at one end of the walkable center, and the colored harbor houses of Nyhavn lie about 2 km (1.2 miles) away, which is a 5 to 10 minute drive or a 25-minute stroll along the pedestrian streets. The usual pattern is to visit Tivoli in the afternoon and evening, and Nyhavn earlier in the day, or to do Nyhavn at dusk and take the car to Tivoli for dinner.

If you are extending a Scandinavian trip, the Swedish capital sits about 650 km (400 miles) from Copenhagen, around seven hours by road and about an hour by air. The Gamla Stan guide and the Vasa Museum guide cover the two sights most visitors choose there. For wider planning, the Europe directory lists the regional pages and the airports hub shows the terminals we serve.

Accessibility and families

The two main entrances are step-free, but not every ride is accessible, and older parts of the park have gravel and cobbles. Check the official site for ride details if you travel with a wheelchair. Strollers are common. Family bookings can include child, toddler and booster seats on request, and the desk can plan the pickup so a tired child is not waiting in the cold. October evenings are cold in Copenhagen, so pack coats and hats.

The private day around the park

If you want the car for the whole day, the private tours with a driver page shows how that works; the attractions hub lists the other guides. For official detail, use the Tivoli site, its history page, its plan your visit page, and the Visit Copenhagen entry for Tivoli. The low-emission rules are on miljoezoner.dk.
