Piraeus transportation: the port is big enough to get lost in
Piraeus is the main port of Athens and one of the busiest passenger harbors in the Mediterranean. It is also a working city, with ferries to the islands, container operations and cruise berths all within the same waterfront. The Piraeus Port Authority (PPA) describes its cruise operation as three passenger terminals and 11 berths that can take even the largest ships, with duty-free shops, a customs office and a tourist police office inside the terminals. A traveler who arrives at the wrong gate, or in the wrong half of the port, can lose half an hour with luggage in the sun.
LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com books Piraeus transfers between the cruise terminals, Athens International Airport, central Athens hotels and the coast. Our 24/7 booking desk is open around the clock, worldwide. Every ride is delivered by a vetted, licensed and commercially insured local chauffeur operator from our worldwide directory, and is booked, confirmed and invoiced by our desk: one booking, one confirmation, one invoice, one point of contact at any hour.
This guide is written for the traveler deciding how to handle the airport leg, the hotel night and the cruise day. For the wider service see cruise transfers and the cruise port directory.
Which Piraeus cruise terminal will your ship use?

Piraeus has three passenger terminals: A (Miaoulis, the main terminal), B (Themistocles) and C (Alkimos). Cruise lines publish Gate 11 for Terminal A and Gate 12 for Terminals B and C. Assignments can change at the last minute, so rely on your cruise documents and the signs at the entry point.
The port authority's cruise terminal page confirms three passenger terminals and 11 berths, a free PPA shuttle between the anchoring areas, passenger terminals and ships, and open parking for 240 tourist coaches. Terminal names and the gate numbers above come from the port's earlier presentation material and from cruise-line embarkation guides, so treat them as a guide and not a guarantee.
Your chauffeur receives the terminal from your documents and re-confirms it on the day. If the plan changes, the desk reroutes the car while you are in transit.
How far is Athens International Airport from the Piraeus cruise port?
The airport is about 47 km (29 miles) from the port, according to the Athens transport information site athenstransport.com. By road, plan on 45 to 70 minutes. Morning and late-afternoon traffic on the Attiki Odos and the approaches to Piraeus can push a transfer to the top of that range, and ship-turnaround days add pressure at the port gates.
There are several ways to make the trip, and the right one depends on your luggage and your day.
| Option | Typical time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport express bus X96 (runs 24 hours) | see the OASA timetable | lowest | Light luggage, flexible schedule |
| Suburban railway to Piraeus | about 1 hour | low | Solo travelers who can handle a station-to-pier leg |
| Metro Line 3, change at Monastiraki to Line 1 | about 1 hour | low | Light luggage and no mobility needs |
| Metered taxi | 45 to 70 minutes | metered, with airport surcharges and a late-night rate | Short notice, no booking |
| Private chauffeur | 45 to 70 minutes, door to door | fixed fare via the booker | Families, heavy luggage, early or late flights, groups |
Public transport is the lowest-cost route and a good one for a single traveler with a carry-on. The catch is the last leg: the metro and rail stations at Piraeus are not at the terminal door, and cruise lines publish roughly 15 minutes on foot to Terminal A and about 30 minutes to Terminals B and C from the Piraeus-side metro stations. The X96 bus ends at the port area, but a bag-heavy walk is still involved.
What a chauffeur adds on the airport leg
- Flight tracking on every airport pickup. If your flight lands early or late, the pickup moves with it.
- Free waiting of 60 minutes after landing on international arrivals, 30 minutes domestic.
- Name-board meet-and-greet inside arrivals as an add-on, with an alias on the board if you prefer privacy.
- A named driver and a fixed fare quoted before you pay, rather than a meter that runs through traffic.
- The right vehicle for the bags. Cruise suitcases are large. A Luxury SUV takes up to 6 passengers with 5 to 6 large bags; an Executive Sprinter takes 12 to 14 passengers and 12 bags.
If you are arriving from overseas, our airport transfers worldwide pages explain the pickup routine for each major airport.
Embarkation and disembarkation: what actually works at the port
Two facts from cruise-line guidance shape the day. First, there is no public parking at the pier, so a private car is a drop-off and a pick-up, not a place to leave a vehicle. Second, there is no luggage storage at the pier, so luggage plans belong at your hotel.

On embarkation day, the chauffeur drives you to the gate for your terminal, unloads the bags and leaves. Check-in follows the cruise line's schedule, so your boarding window matters more than the clock. On disembarkation day, give us the time your group is called and we schedule the pickup after it. Free waiting on a port pickup is 15 minutes, and your driver can message you as you come out.
Piraeus is also the ferry gateway to the Greek islands. Ferry gates are separate from the cruise passenger terminals, so tell us whether you are boarding a cruise ship or a ferry when you book.
Piraeus to central Athens and the Acropolis
Central Athens is close: the Acropolis is roughly 12 km (7 miles) from the cruise terminals, and the Syntagma area is about 11 km (7 miles). By private car, plan on 25 to 45 minutes depending on the hour. The Acropolis hill is a protected archaeological site, and vehicles cannot drive up to the monuments, so your chauffeur sets you down near an entrance and returns when you are ready. For timed tickets and etiquette, read our Acropolis of Athens guide. Where the site requires or recommends a licensed guide, book that separately; the chauffeur drives, suggests stops and does not give the tour.
If you have one day between ships, a chauffeured circuit can combine the Acropolis in the cooler morning, a lunch in Plaka or Koukaki, and a return to the pier with time to spare. A private tour with driver can be booked by the hour or the day, with a driver who waits.
Piraeus to Cape Sounion
For a longer excursion, Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon sit at the southern tip of Attica, roughly 65 to 70 km (40 to 43 miles) from Piraeus, about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by road, mostly along the coast. Late afternoon is the popular window, because the temple is at its best near sunset. See our Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion guide for opening and ticket notes.
The seasonal X80 bus versus a private driver
The X80 Piraeus-Acropolis-Syntagma express is operated by the Athens bus authority from May to October. Per its route page, it is a circular route of about 27 km that takes roughly 60 minutes, links the cruise terminals with the Acropolis and central Athens, runs every 35 to 40 minutes and operates from 7:00 to 21:15. The exact dates are announced each year.

It is the best-value option for a solo traveler on a shore day with no luggage. A private driver wins on timing, air conditioning and comfort in summer heat, and when more than two people travel together, a driver also covers several stops without a bus schedule.
| Option | Typical time | Cost note | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| X80 express bus (May to October) | about 60 minutes for the loop | lowest | Solo travelers, day visits, no luggage |
| Metro to the center | varies by station and change | low | Travelers comfortable with stations |
| Metered taxi | 25 to 45 minutes | metered | Quick trips, no booking |
| Private driver | 25 to 45 minutes each way, waits on request | fixed fare via the booker | Families, groups, heat, tight ship deadlines |
Hotels, villas and the Athens Riviera
Travelers often stay a night before or after a cruise, and many choose the coast: Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Kavouri along the Athens Riviera, or a central hotel near Syntagma Square. The booker accepts hotel, villa and private-address pickups. A concierge desk can also book on a guest's behalf through a trade account. See hotel concierge bookings.
Choosing the right vehicle
Classes are "or similar", with the exact model confirmed at booking. In Greece we specify Mercedes-Benz models.
- Executive Sedan: Mercedes-Benz E-Class or similar, up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 cabin bags.
- First Class Sedan: Mercedes-Benz S-Class or similar, up to 3 passengers, 2 large and 2 cabin bags.
- Luxury SUV or Mercedes-Benz V-Class: up to 6 passengers and 5 to 6 large bags.
- Executive Sprinter: up to 12 to 14 passengers and 12 bags.
- Mini-coach, coach and stretch limousine: on request.
Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request at booking. Water and phone chargers are in most vehicles. Maybach, Rolls-Royce and Bentley are available on request, with availability confirmed at booking. See the fleet page.
Groups, corporate accounts and tourist offices
Groups from the same ship often split between two or three vehicles. The booker lets you reserve several cars under one account, with named chauffeurs and a single invoice. Corporate accounts with monthly invoicing and trade accounts for travel agents, DMCs and hotel concierges are available. Official tourist offices, tourism boards and visitor centres can book chauffeur services for their visitors with LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com through a trade account.
Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips. NDAs are signed on request, and alias bookings are accepted. We are a chauffeur service and not a security company: we do not provide armed drivers or bodyguards, and we work alongside a client's own security team. Browse the Europe directory for other regions.
Cancellation terms are fixed: more than 72 hours' notice, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100%, measured from the scheduled pickup time.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Athens International Airport from Piraeus port?
About 47 km (29 miles) by road. Allow 45 to 70 minutes depending on the Attiki Odos and the approach to the port. A chauffeur gives you a fixed fare and tracks your flight.
Which gate do I use for the cruise terminals?
Cruise lines list Gate 11 for Terminal A (Miaoulis) and Gate 12 for Terminals B (Themistocles) and C (Alkimos), but ships can be reassigned. Your chauffeur confirms the gate from your documents on the day.
Is there parking or luggage storage at the pier?
Cruise lines advise that there is no public parking and no luggage storage at the pier. A private car works as a drop-off and pick-up. Plan luggage storage through your hotel.
Is the metro a good option from the airport?
It is the lowest-cost route, at about an hour with a change at Monastiraki. The walk from the Piraeus metro stations to the terminals is 15 to 30 minutes according to cruise lines, so with luggage a car is easier.
How long does it take to get from Piraeus to the Acropolis?
The Acropolis is roughly 12 km (7 miles) from the terminals, typically 25 to 45 minutes by car depending on traffic. Vehicles cannot go up the hill, so the driver sets you down near an entrance.
Can you drive us to Cape Sounion from the ship?
Yes. Cape Sounion is roughly 65 to 70 km (40 to 43 miles) away, about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Book a private tour with driver and tell us when your ship sails so we plan a safe return.
Do you offer a guide as well as a driver?
A chauffeur drives and suggests stops. Licensed guides are separate professionals, and sites such as the Acropolis recommend or require them for guided visits. You book the guide separately.
How do I get a price?
Use the online booker. It shows the exact fixed fare for the exact addresses and vehicle before you confirm.
What if my ship is late or changes berth?
Tell the desk, which is staffed 24/7. For airport pickups, flight tracking covers delays, and we update your chauffeur if the terminal changes.
