Boulders is small on purpose. The colony lives in a cluster of granite coves at the edge of Simon's Town, the visiting areas are narrow boardwalks, and parking is limited. None of that is a flaw; it is how the birds stay protected. For a visitor, though, it means that how and when you arrive matters more here than at almost any other stop on the Cape Peninsula.
This guide is for travelers booking a Boulders Beach private tour with driver or asking how to get to Boulders Beach by car. It explains the route along False Bay, what SANParks asks of visitors, how tides and time of day change the experience, and how to fit the colony into a day with Cape Point and the Waterfront.
Where do cars go for the Boulders penguins, and how bad is the parking?
Boulders sits in Simon's Town, on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula, about 40 km (25 miles) from central Cape Town. SANParks warns that parking is limited, so it advises arriving early in peak summer. A chauffeur drops you at the entrance and parks elsewhere, which removes the problem.
The Boulders section of Table Mountain National Park is made up of three beaches, one penguin viewing area and three boardwalks, according to SANParks. It is also one of the park's pay points, with a daily conservation fee that is posted on the SANParks tariff page rather than printed here. The rangers patrol daily, and the beach is described as safe for families.
The approach is simple but the last hundred meters are not. The main road through Simon's Town is narrow, with a lot of foot traffic and, in summer, queues for the car park. A chauffeur will usually drop you at the point nearest the entrance you want and agree a collection point, because the last stretch is slow to walk and slower to drive. Our drivers know the town, the one-way sections and the places where the car can wait without blocking residents.
The route from Cape Town along False Bay
SANParks describes Boulders as reached by the M4 from the city centre, through Muizenberg, Fish Hoek and on into Simon's Town. It adds that getting to Muizenberg via the M3 or M5 is quicker than staying on the M4 for the whole run, because the coastal road passes through busy neighborhoods.

In practice, a chauffeur leaves the city along the M3, which skirts the eastern slopes of Table Mountain through Newlands and Tokai, joins the coast at Muizenberg and then follows the shore through Kalk Bay, St James and Fish Hoek to Simon's Town. The railway line runs beside the sea for much of the way, and the views across False Bay are among the best on the peninsula.
The distances are about 40 km (25 miles) from central Cape Town and about 45 km (28 miles) from Cape Town International Airport, with a typical drive of 50 to 60 minutes outside peak periods. On weekends and holidays the road through Kalk Bay and Fish Hoek slows to a crawl, and an extra 20 minutes is prudent. Boulders is about 25 km (16 miles) from the Cape Point gate, roughly 35 minutes, which is what makes the two stops such a natural pair.
What the colony is, and what has changed
African penguins are a southern African seabird, and Boulders is a land-based colony that SANParks says was established in 1983. The species has declined sharply across its range. SANParks' page records an older classification of Endangered from 2010; SANCCOB, the seabird rehabilitation charity, now describes the species as critically endangered. The causes listed by SANParks include habitat loss, oil spills and marine pollution, the effects of warming seas on fish stocks, overfishing, irresponsible tourism, and domestic animals.
That context shapes the rules, which are strict and simple. Stay on the boardwalks within the viewing area. Do not touch or feed the penguins; their beaks are sharp, and a nipped finger is common among visitors who ignore the signs. Alcohol and smoking are not allowed. Boulders is a no-take zone in the marine protected area, so nothing may be removed from the sea. It is closed to vessels, including canoes and kayaks.
If you would like to understand the bird conservation work, SANCCOB runs hospital tours at its Cape Town centre in Table View, daily from 09:00 to 15:00, by booking only, according to its site. That centre is on the northern side of the city, in the opposite direction from Simon's Town, so treat it as a separate outing.
Tides, light and the best hour to go
SANParks says beach space depends on the tides and recommends coming at low tide. At high tide the sheltered coves shrink, and the walkable sand reduces to a thin strip. Check a tide table for the date, and ask the chauffeur to plan the arrival around it.
Penguins are visible throughout the day, and they are active in the morning and late afternoon. The middle of the day, between 11:00 and 14:00, is the most crowded period, particularly from December to February. Early morning light is clean, the boardwalks are quieter and the car park is almost empty. If you are combining Boulders with Cape Point, there are two sensible orders.
Penguins first. Reach Boulders at 08:30, spend an hour, then drive to Cape Point for the late morning. This avoids the midday crowd at the colony and gets you to the funicular before the afternoon tour buses.
Cape Point first, penguins last. Gate at Cape Point early, then Boulders in the mid-afternoon on the way back to the city. Use this order when the weather forecast favors a clear morning at the point.
SANParks publishes entrance gate times month by month on its entrance gates page, with Boulders listed as its own gate, and warns that times can change without notice. Check the current figures on the day you travel.
Swimming, children and the sheltered cove
Boulders is one of the few places on the peninsula where you can swim among penguins. SANParks describes the beach as ideal for children, because enormous boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves, though visitors are asked to take care. The water in False Bay is cold, typically around 15 degrees Celsius, so a short dip is enough for most people.

Families should bring a hat, sunscreen and a towel, and keep children close on the boardwalks, where the penguins nest in the vegetation. A good plan is to arrive early, walk the boardwalks first and swim afterwards, as the beach fills later in the morning. Child, toddler and booster seats are available in the car on request, and the chauffeur can store towels and a cool box in the boot.
Simon's Town: more than a car park
The town is a naval base on False Bay, and the main street is lined with Victorian and Edwardian buildings, small museums, restaurants and shops. The statue of Just Nuisance, the Great Dane that became an honorary Royal Navy mascot, stands on Jubilee Square. A walk from the square to the harbor takes less than an hour with a coffee stop.
There are restaurants within a short distance of the colony, which SANParks notes are in close proximity. Lunch in the town is usually more relaxed than lunch at the point. If you are driving back through Fish Hoek and Kalk Bay, Kalk Bay harbor has fish restaurants and antique shops and makes an easy afternoon stop.
School holidays, wind and the cruise-day visitor
South African school holidays and the December to February peak put real pressure on this small site. If your dates are flexible, choose a weekday outside the holidays. Autumn and spring are mild, uncrowded and often calm on the False Bay side, while winter brings cold fronts and rough days when the beach is empty and the boardwalks are slippery. A strong southeaster in summer blows hard across False Bay, and the penguins tend to shelter among the rocks, so patience is sometimes needed.
Cruise passengers and travelers on a long airport layover should be realistic. A round trip to Boulders from the city takes about two hours of driving, plus the visit, so a four-hour window is the absolute minimum and a six-hour window is comfortable. Tell the desk your latest safe return time and the chauffeur will work backwards from it. Keep Cape Point for a longer stay.
Photography is permitted from the boardwalks, but flash and drones are poor practice around nesting birds, and the colony is easily disturbed. Keep voices low, keep children from reaching through railings and follow any instructions from rangers. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips; discretion is part of the service.
How to get there: the options compared

| Option | Time from central Cape Town | Cost note | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metrorail train | About 1 hour 15 minutes, check current service | Lowest | Patient travelers with spare time |
| Rental car, self-drive | 50 to 60 minutes | Moderate, plus fuel and the gate fee | Confident drivers who like flexibility |
| Shared day tour | 8 to 9 hours with Cape Point | Per-seat price, fixed stops | Solo travelers on a tight schedule |
| Rideshare | 50 to 60 minutes | Surge-priced, return is hard to find | One-way trips |
| Private chauffeur, half day | 4 to 5 hours | Fixed fare via the booker | Families, couples, short stays |
| Private chauffeur, full day with Cape Point | 8 to 9 hours | Fixed fare via the booker | Groups, first visits, cruise and airport layovers |
The train is the lowest-cost way to Simon's Town and a scenic one, but service reliability has varied, and you will still need to get from the station to the colony. Check the current timetable before you commit. A self-drive rental works well for confident drivers. The chauffeur makes sense when the group is large, the parking is the concern, or Boulders is one stop in a long day, which is why most of our bookings combine it with Cape Point.
A chauffeured day on the peninsula
08:00 depart the hotel. Follow the M3 and the coast road to Simon's Town. If the wind is blowing at the Atlantic side, the False Bay route is the more comfortable.
09:00 to 10:30 Boulders. Boardwalks first, then the beach if you want to swim.
10:30 to 11:15 Simon's Town. Coffee, Jubilee Square.
11:30 to 15:00 Cape Point. Gate, funicular, lighthouse and lunch, as covered in our Cape Point guide.
15:00 to 17:00 return. Over Chapman's Peak if it is open, or back via Ou Kaapse Weg.
Two cautions apply to this timetable. First, the Cape Point gate closes at dusk and hours shorten in winter, so a winter version of the day should start 30 to 45 minutes earlier. Second, the false sense of a short distance on the map misleads many visitors: the coastal road is a single carriageway through villages, and a stalled delivery truck in Fish Hoek can add a quarter of an hour. Build a small buffer in, and the day will feel unhurried rather than rushed.
If you prefer a gentler day, drop Cape Point and add the Stellenbosch winelands on another day. For a city morning before or after the coast, read our guides to Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront. Details for other regional days are on our private tours with driver page, the Africa directory and the Cape Town chauffeur service page.
Accessibility and what to bring
The boardwalks are raised and mostly level, but the path down from the car park, the sand and the steps at some viewpoints can be difficult for wheelchair users. Tell our desk at booking if anyone needs step-free access, and the driver will advise which entrance to use based on current conditions. Carry water, a windproof layer and sun protection; the wind off False Bay can be strong and the sun is hard on exposed boardwalks.
For arrivals from the airport, flight tracking is standard on pickups, with 60 minutes of free waiting after an international landing, so you can drive straight from the terminal to the coast on arrival day if you wish. The airports hub has more on how airport pickups work.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Boulders Beach from Cape Town?
About 40 km (25 miles) from central Cape Town and 45 km (28 miles) from the airport. Allow 50 to 60 minutes outside peak periods, and longer on summer weekends.
Can you swim at Boulders Beach?
Yes. SANParks says you can swim at Boulders, and that the cove is sheltered by large boulders, which makes it suitable for children. The water is cold, typically around 15 degrees Celsius.
Can you touch the penguins?
No. SANParks asks visitors not to touch or feed them. Their beaks are sharp, and visitors should stay on the boardwalks within the viewing area.
Is parking available at Boulders Beach?
Limited parking is available, and SANParks advises arriving early during peak summer months. A chauffeur drops you near the entrance and parks away from the congested area.
What time should I go to see the penguins?
They are visible all day. Morning and late afternoon are quieter and the light is better, while midday in December to February is the busiest period. Choose low tide for more beach space.
How long do I need at Boulders?
Allow 60 to 90 minutes for the boardwalks, and longer if you plan to swim. Pair it with Simon's Town and Cape Point for a full day.
Is Boulders Beach worth visiting if I have seen penguins elsewhere?
Few places let you see wild African penguins this close from a boardwalk, with swimmers on the next cove. It is a short, high-value stop on any peninsula day.
Can tourist offices book this for visitors?
Official tourist offices and visitor centers can book chauffeur services for their visitors with LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com through a trade account.
