Li River Private Tour with Driver: How to Get to the Li River by Car from Guilin

The Li River cruise runs one way, from Guilin's piers to Yangshuo, so a car is what turns it into a day trip. This guide covers the piers, the road, tickets, water levels and a plan.

The Li River cruise has an awkward shape. The boat leaves from piers southeast of Guilin and ends in Yangshuo, and it only travels downstream. There is no return sailing, which means that every visitor, however they book, has to solve the same problem at the end of the day: how to get back to Guilin, the airport or the train. A Li River private tour with driver solves it by sending the car to the far side while you are on the water.

This guide is written for travelers who want to see the river without sorting out bus timetables in a language they do not read. It covers the road to the piers, the choice of boat, what the river's official operator publishes, how water levels change the plan and what to do after you step ashore.

How do you get to the Li River by car from Guilin?

The main Li River cruise terminal at Mopanshan, also called Zhujiang, is less than 30 km (19 miles) from downtown Guilin, usually 40 to 60 minutes by car. Guilin Liangjiang International Airport is about 28 km (17 miles) from the city center. The cruise ends at Longtoushan Pier in Yangshuo, where the car meets you.

Those figures come from the scenic area's own English transportation page, with the drive times as planning estimates. Traffic on the road to the piers is rarely the problem. The problem is the sailing schedule, which decides when you must be at the pier, not the other way round.

What the Li River is and why the cruise matters

The official site of the Guilin Li River Scenic Area describes the river as the upper reach of the Gui River in the Pearl River system, rising on Mao'er Mountain, which it gives as 2,141.5 meters high. The river lies within the core zone of the Guilin Karst World Natural Heritage Site, and the cruise route is about 61 kilometers long. The scenery is the karst peaks that rise abruptly from the plain, with the river bending between them and water buffalo and bamboo on the banks.

The scenic area lists named viewpoints along the route, among them Nine-Horse Painting Hill, Yangdi, Xingping, Snail Hill and Gold Ingot Hill and 20 Yuan Banknote. That last one is the view printed on the back of China's 20 yuan note, and it is the place most visitors want to photograph. Whether you see it from the deck or from the road depends on the section you choose.

Four choices to make before you book

1. Which section of the river. The scenic area's cruise routes page lists several options: the highlight reach from Mopanshan (Zhujiang) to Yangshuo, shorter sectional cruises from Xingping to the fishing village and back, sections around Daxu Ancient Town, and bamboo raft routes from Yangdi and Xingping. The full run is the classic day. The Xingping round trip is a good choice if you are based in Yangshuo and want the 20 yuan view without the long transfer from Guilin.

2. Which class of boat. The official site groups the vessels into three-, four- and five-star cruises. Three-star boats have panoramic windows, Wi-Fi and audio guides in several languages. Four-star boats offer more space and upholstered seating. Five-star boats are described as electric or low-emission, with lounges, a bar, a restaurant, butler service and private charter. The class affects comfort and meals, not the scenery.

3. Which pier. The scenic area's pages name the Mopanshan and Zhujiang terminals, and in places use the two names for the same departure point. Other sources suggest that different boat classes can leave from different piers, so do not assume. Your ticket specifies the pier, and the chauffeur needs that name, not the boat class.

4. One way or round trip. The cruise itself is downstream. The shuttle options described by the scenic area, including a return tour line from Yangshuo's Longtoushan Pier via Yangdi back to the Guilin piers, exist for visitors who want to return by coach. A private car replaces that coach and leaves when you do.

The road from Guilin to the piers

From the middle of Guilin the drive to the piers takes you southeast out of the city and along local roads. It is a short run, 40 to 60 minutes in most conditions, and it is straightforward for a driver who knows which pier has which boats. Boarding for a typical morning sailing closes before the boat leaves, so the practical rule is to be at the pier at least 30 minutes before departure, with tickets and passports in hand.

If you land at Guilin Liangjiang International Airport, the airport is about 28 km (17 miles) from the city center, and the transfer to the pier adds a further drive, so allow roughly one to one and a half hours in total. The desk confirms the exact timing against your flight and your sailing, which is why we ask for both at booking. Our airports directory explains the arrivals service, including flight tracking and free waiting time on international landings.

China's expressways pass through Guilin, and the scenic area says a navigation system can take drivers directly to any scenic-area pier. A local chauffeur does not need to; the value is the knowledge of which gate to use and where the car can wait.

Ending in Yangshuo: where the car meets you

The cruise finishes at Longtoushan Pier, also named Shuidongmen Pier, in Yangshuo County. This is where the day gets interesting. Yangshuo is a town of karst peaks and tourist streets, and the pier is close to the old town, though crowds from the boats can make the road busy for a short time after the arrivals. The chauffeur waits at an agreed point, not at the pier gate, so you do not have to look for a number plate among dozens of vehicles.

From Yangshuo to central Guilin is roughly 65 km (40 miles), about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes by expressway. To Guilin's airport it is a little over an hour, depending on the road. If your flight leaves in the evening, plan to leave Yangshuo by mid-afternoon; if the cruise runs late, the car is still waiting, and the desk can adjust the pickup time while you are on the water.

Tickets, booking and what to carry

The scenic area's site says cruise and raft tickets are sold through the WeChat service account known as the Li River Ticket Office, and its menu includes an online reservation section. International visitors who do not use WeChat usually buy through an operator or through their hotel, and the desk can include the cruise in a private-day arrangement if you tell us which boat class you want. Check the official Li River Scenic Area site for the current ticket and reservation information.

Carry your passport, since it is the standard identity document for visitors. Carry the ticket on your phone and, if you can, a printed copy. Bring a light jacket, a hat and water, because the deck can be hot or windy, and a rain layer in the wetter months. Cash is useful for small purchases in Yangshuo.

Entry rules for mainland China depend on your passport and change from time to time. Check the current requirements with the Chinese embassy or consulate before you book flights.

Water levels, weather and the best season

The river's level changes with the season, and it decides what is possible. The scenic area lists sectional routes and rafts in addition to the full cruise, which is a sign that the operators vary the service. When water is low, boats may run shorter sections; when the water is high or the weather is severe, sailings can be disrupted. The operator, not the car, makes that call on the day, so confirm the sailing with your ticket seller before you set off.

Visibility is the other variable. Mist is part of the Guilin landscape and can soften the peaks in a way many visitors find beautiful, though heavy cloud hides the viewpoints. Summer brings heat and storms, and winter is cooler. Check a forecast two or three days ahead and keep a second day free if your schedule allows. The scenic area's site links to a weather page.

A full day with a chauffeur

A cruise ship in port
A cruise ship in port
  • 07:45 Pickup from your hotel in Guilin.
  • 08:45 Arrive at the Mopanshan or Zhujiang terminal, collect tickets and board.
  • 09:30 to 13:30 The cruise from Guilin toward Yangshuo, which operators describe as around four hours. Lunch is served on board on some classes.
  • 13:45 Step ashore at Longtoushan Pier in Yangshuo and meet the car at the agreed point.
  • 14:15 Optional stop in Yangshuo's old town, or continue directly.
  • 15:00 Drive back to Guilin, the airport or the station.

Times vary by sailing and class of boat, so treat these as a frame. The cruise timetable is the fixed element; the rest flexes around it.

Beyond the cruise: Xingping and Yangdi

If you have a second day, Xingping and Yangdi are the places to add. Xingping lies along the river about 25 to 27 km (16 to 17 miles) from Yangshuo, around 30 to 40 minutes by car. The scenic area lists a Xingping sectional cruise that runs from Xingping to the fishing village and back, and bamboo rafts that start at Yangdi and at Chaobanshan Pier in Xingping. Bamboo rafts are a shorter and slower way onto the water than the main cruise and are a good choice for families.

Because the standard cruise is one-way, a private car also lets you reverse the order: drive to Xingping first in the cool of the morning for the 20 yuan view and a raft, then continue to Yangshuo for lunch. It is a calmer day than the full cruise and suits anyone who does not want four hours on a boat.

Combining the Li River with other Chinese cities

Guilin is a regional city rather than one of our main directory pages, so the desk confirms the operator and vehicle at booking. It is reached by air from the larger Chinese cities and from Hong Kong, and many visitors fit it into a longer China trip. If you are building that trip, our guides to West Lake in Hangzhou, The Bund in Shanghai and the Forbidden City in Beijing use the same planning method, and the Hong Kong chauffeur service page covers the gateway many travelers pass through. For a different Asian water landscape, see Ha Long Bay. The Asia-Pacific directory lists every city we cover, and our private tours with driver page explains how a multi-day booking works.

Comfort, accessibility and etiquette

Boats have gangways and decks, and boarding can involve steps; confirm access with the operator before booking if anyone in your party uses a wheelchair. Child, toddler and booster seats are available on request in our vehicles, and most vehicles carry water and phone chargers. Respect the people who live and work on the river. Do not photograph fishermen or villagers at close range without asking, keep rubbish with you and follow boat staff instructions about moving on the deck. The scenic area is a protected landscape, so the usual rules about not leaving litter apply.

The scenic area's own shuttles and coaches are the lowest-cost way to move between Guilin, the piers and Yangshuo, and a visitor with time and patience can use them. A chauffeur costs more but removes the transfers and the language barrier, and is the better choice when you have a flight, bags or a group.
