The first decision in any New York private jet charter is not the aircraft. It is the airport. The New York area has at least five realistic options for a business jet, and the right one depends on where the traveler sleeps, works or plays, what time they land, and how heavy the aircraft is. Pick well and the car ride is shorter than a coffee meeting. Pick badly and a smooth two-hour flight ends with ninety minutes on the Cross Bronx Expressway.
This guide compares the main choices for flying a private jet NYC trip: Teterboro (TEB), Westchester County (HPN), Republic (FRG), JFK and Morristown (MMU). It covers drive times to Manhattan, airport rules that affect your schedule, typical costs and how LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com books the chauffeured car on both sides. When you are ready, send the trip details through our private jet charter request page. For a deep dive on the busiest of them, read our dedicated Teterboro private jet guide.
Which New York airport is best for a private jet?
For Midtown and Downtown Manhattan, Teterboro is usually the closest at about 20 km (12 miles). Westchester suits Connecticut and northern suburbs, Republic suits Long Island and the Hamptons, Morristown suits northwest New Jersey, and JFK suits heavy aircraft and travelers connecting with airline flights.
The honest answer is "the one closest to where you are going, that can take your aircraft at your time." Distance alone is not enough. Each airport has its own weight limits, customs arrangements and noise programs, and each sits on a different side of the city's rivers and bridges. The table below compares them using road distances to Times Square.
| Airport | Best for | Road distance to Midtown | Typical drive | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teterboro (TEB), NJ | Manhattan, especially the West Side | About 20 km (12 miles) | 25 to 60 minutes | 100,000 lb aircraft limit, voluntary quiet hours |
| Westchester (HPN), NY | Greenwich, Westchester, Fairfield County | About 55 km (34 miles) | 55 to 90 minutes | Voluntary curfew midnight to 6:30 a.m. |
| Republic (FRG), NY | Long Island, the Hamptons | About 60 km (37 miles) | 60 to 100 minutes | Prior permission for larger aircraft |
| JFK, NY | Heavy jets, airline connections | About 29 km (18 miles) | 35 to 75 minutes | Busy airline hub, longer taxi times |
| Morristown (MMU), NJ | Morris County, northwest New Jersey | About 52 km (32 miles) | 55 to 90 minutes | Longer run into Manhattan |
Drive times assume a weekday and are shown as ranges because New York traffic can double them. Road distances are calculated routes, not straight lines.
Teterboro: the default for Manhattan
Teterboro is where most Manhattan-bound business jets land, for a simple reason: it is the closest dedicated general aviation airport to Midtown, about 20 km (12 miles) by road through the Lincoln Tunnel. The Port Authority owns it and keeps it free of scheduled airline service, so jets are not queuing behind wide-bodies.

Two rules shape planning. First, weight: the Port Authority states that no aircraft may weigh more than 100,000 pounds on any Teterboro paved surface (Port Authority of NY & NJ, Teterboro permission to operate). That rules out the largest corporate airliners and some heavy jets at full weight, which is why those aircraft often use JFK or Newark instead. Second, noise: the Teterboro Quiet Flying Program asks operators to refrain from non-essential operations during quiet hours between 23:00 and 06:00 local time (Teterboro flight crew handbook). A late-night arrival is possible, but your operator will plan around it.
On the ground, the tunnel is the variable. A weekday 7 p.m. landing can mean 60 minutes or more into Midtown, while a Sunday morning arrival may take 25. Our Teterboro FBO page explains where cars meet aircraft, and the Teterboro private jet guide goes deeper on FBOs and procedures.
Is Westchester better for Connecticut and the northern suburbs?
Often, yes. Westchester County Airport describes itself as about five miles east of White Plains and about 30 miles north of New York City. By our routing it is about 55 km (34 miles) by road to Midtown, but only about 11 km (7 miles) to Greenwich, Connecticut. For anyone living or working in Westchester or Fairfield County, a Westchester private jet arrival can turn a long city slog into a fifteen-minute ride home.

The airport is a busy corporate base, with Million Air, Atlantic Aviation and Signature Flight Support all offering full FBO services for aircraft of all sizes. Its main schedule constraint is noise: a Voluntary Restraint From Flying program asks all operators to refrain from flying between midnight and 6:30 a.m. daily. The county stresses it is voluntary, not a mandatory curfew, but it asks travelers to keep it in mind when planning (Westchester County Airport, noise abatement).

Republic Airport: Long Island's executive field
Republic, in East Farmingdale, is owned by the New York State Department of Transportation and markets itself as Long Island's executive airport, an alternative to JFK and LaGuardia for business travelers. Its instrument runway is 6,827 feet, and aircraft over 60,000 pounds maximum takeoff weight or more than 30 seats need prior permission (Republic Airport, pilot information).

For a Republic Airport arrival, the geography is everything. Midtown is about 60 km (37 miles) by road, so 60 to 100 minutes is realistic. But for the Hamptons, Republic cuts a huge slice off the trip from Manhattan airports: East Hampton is about 113 km (70 miles) from the field, close to two hours with light traffic and longer on summer weekends. For North Shore estates, the drive can be well under an hour.
International arrivals can clear US Customs and Border Protection at Republic, but pilots must email CBP at least 24 hours before arrival, and the office's regular hours are 09:00 to 22:00 Eastern (Republic Airport, pilot information). Ask your operator to confirm clearance before you lock in a late-evening return from Europe. For ground transport out east, see our Long Island limo service.
When does JFK make sense for a private jet?
JFK is an airline hub first. Private aircraft share its runways with long-haul traffic, which can mean longer taxi times and less flexibility than at a dedicated general aviation field. Still, three situations favor it:
- Heavy aircraft. If the jet is too heavy for Teterboro's 100,000-pound limit, JFK and Newark are the obvious alternatives.
- Airline connections. A traveler connecting from a commercial long-haul flight to a private hop, or the reverse, avoids a cross-town transfer.
- Queens and Brooklyn destinations. JFK is about 29 km (18 miles) from Midtown but much closer to parts of Brooklyn and Queens.
Our JFK airport car service, LaGuardia transfers and Newark airport car service pages cover the ground side at each hub.

Morristown: the quiet New Jersey alternative
Morristown Municipal sits in Morris County, New Jersey, and is popular with travelers who live in the northwest New Jersey suburbs or have business along the I-287 corridor. It has a customs facility, and its road distance to Midtown is about 52 km (32 miles), so it rarely beats Teterboro for a Manhattan meeting. It earns its place when the destination is Morristown, Basking Ridge or the Somerset Hills, where Teterboro would add a long drive west. Confirm customs hours and notice periods with your operator before an international arrival, as they differ from airport to airport.
How much does a New York private jet charter cost?
Charter pricing depends on aircraft category, flight time, positioning, waiting time and fees, so any honest figure is a range. Business Jet Traveler reported marketplace averages from JetASAP quote data of about US$6,600 to US$7,000 per flight hour for light jets, around US$7,800 to US$8,100 for midsize jets, about US$10,200 to US$10,800 for super-midsize jets and roughly US$12,500 to US$14,000 for heavy jets, across reports from late 2022 (Business Jet Traveler, November 2022) and early 2023 (Business Jet Traveler, January 2023). Rates move with demand, and New York holiday weekends are among the busiest.
US taxes add to the base price. The IRS applies a 7.5% tax on amounts paid for taxable transportation of persons by air, plus a domestic segment tax of $5.30 per segment for 2026 (IRS Publication 510). On a charter, the segment charge is calculated per passenger.
| Aircraft category | Typical use from New York | Reported average hourly range (US$) |
|---|---|---|
| Light jet | Boston, Washington, Nantucket | About 6,600 to 7,000 |
| Midsize jet | Chicago, Toronto, Atlanta | About 7,800 to 8,100 |
| Super-midsize jet | Florida, Texas, the Caribbean | About 10,200 to 10,800 |
| Heavy jet | West Coast, Europe | About 12,500 to 14,000 |
These are published averages, not quotes. LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com acts as your booking agent: every flight is operated by a licensed Part 135 air carrier that holds operational control, and the final price comes from that operator. For more on how quotes are built, see our private jet charter cost guide.
How do you check the operator before booking?
The FAA advises asking to see the operator's Air Carrier or Operating Certificate before paying, and lists red flags including attempts to transfer operational control to the customer and no federal excise tax on the invoice (FAA, thinking of chartering an aircraft?). A legitimate quote names the operator, shows the tax and gives a tail number before departure. We send the operator name and aircraft details with every confirmation so you or your security team can verify them.
Planning the car: meeting the jet at each airport
The flight can land on time and still feel late if the car is not ready. The essentials are the same at every New York airport:
- Give the tail number and FBO. The chauffeur tracks the aircraft, not an airline flight number, and goes to the right FBO.
- Choose planeside or lobby pickup. Planeside access depends on FBO and security rules, so request it when you book.
- Match the vehicle to the bags. A sedan works for two with carry-ons; golf bags and ski cases need an SUV or a Sprinter van with driver.
- Consider hourly service. For a day of Manhattan meetings, an hourly chauffeur who stays with you is often simpler than a string of transfers. Our New York hourly chauffeur guide explains when it pays.
Every booking includes free waiting time: 60 minutes after international landings, 30 after domestic landings and 15 for other pickups. You can also add a meet and greet for guests arriving alone, and companies running a multi-meeting day can set it up through our corporate car service. The private jet car service desk handles all five airports, and for event weeks such as the US Open tennis, book the car when you book the jet.
If the traffic picture looks grim, a short helicopter hop from the airport to a Manhattan heliport can help. Our guide to helicopter transfers explains when that is worth it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the closest private jet airport to Manhattan?
Teterboro in New Jersey is the closest dedicated business aviation airport to Midtown, about 20 km (12 miles) by road, usually 25 to 60 minutes through the Lincoln Tunnel. JFK is closer to parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Read our Teterboro private jet guide for FBO details.
Can every private jet land at Teterboro?
No. The Port Authority prohibits aircraft weighing more than 100,000 pounds on Teterboro's paved surfaces, which excludes the largest corporate airliners and some heavy jets at full weight. Those aircraft typically use JFK or Newark. Your operator checks the aircraft's weight when quoting.
Is Westchester County Airport good for flying private to New York?
It is excellent for Westchester, Greenwich and Fairfield County, often a fifteen-minute drive from home. For Midtown, the road distance is about 55 km (34 miles), so allow 55 to 90 minutes. Operators are asked to avoid flying between midnight and 6:30 a.m. under a voluntary program.
Which airport should I use for the Hamptons?
Republic Airport in Farmingdale saves a large part of the drive compared with Manhattan-area airports, with East Hampton about 113 km (70 miles) away by road. Some travelers fly directly to East End airfields instead. We arrange the car from either through our Long Island limo service.
Does LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com operate the aircraft?
No. We act as your booking agent. Every flight is operated by a licensed air carrier, under FAA Part 135 in the United States, which holds operational control. We pass you the operator's name and aircraft details, and we book the chauffeured cars at both ends through the private jet car service desk.
How early should my chauffeur arrive at the FBO?
For departures, the pickup time is set so you reach the FBO with the margin your operator asks for, with extra allowance on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends. For arrivals, the chauffeur tracks your tail number and waits at the FBO, with 60 minutes free after international landings and 30 after domestic ones.
