A Houston private jet charter is rarely about one address. A typical trip might start with a meeting downtown, move to an office in the Energy Corridor, and end with dinner near the Galleria, while the next morning's flight leaves for a site visit in West Texas or a client in Mexico City. Houston covers a lot of ground, so the airport you choose shapes the whole day.
This guide compares the four airports that matter most for business jets: William P. Hobby (HOU), George Bush Intercontinental (IAH), Sugar Land Regional (SGR) and Conroe-North Houston Regional (CXO). It explains why the energy sector drives so much of the traffic, what charter costs look like, how international clearance works, and how LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com books the chauffeured car to meet the aircraft.
Which Houston airport is best for a private jet?
Hobby is closest to downtown and the Texas Medical Center. Sugar Land is closest to the Galleria and the southwest suburbs, Conroe is closest to The Woodlands and Lake Conroe, and Bush Intercontinental suits heavy jets and airline connections. Choose by your first meeting, not by the city's name.
Houston's airport system describes Bush Intercontinental as 23 miles north of downtown and Hobby as 7 miles south, in straight-line terms (Houston Airports, about us). On the road, the picture changes with the freeway network, which is why the table below uses driving distances.
| Airport | Best for | Road distance to downtown | Typical drive | Notes for private flyers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hobby (HOU) | Downtown, Medical Center, Clear Lake | About 21 km (13 miles) | 25 to 50 minutes | City airport south of downtown |
| Bush Intercontinental (IAH) | North Houston, Spring, heavy jets | About 37 km (23 miles) | 35 to 70 minutes | Major hub, mixed with airline traffic |
| Sugar Land Regional (SGR) | Galleria, Energy Corridor, Fort Bend | About 41 km (25 miles) | 30 to 60 minutes | Corporate focus, US Customs on site |
| Conroe-North Houston (CXO) | The Woodlands, Lake Conroe | About 73 km (45 miles) | 60 to 90 minutes | Two FBOs, US Customs on site |
Distances to downtown are calculated routes, except Sugar Land's, which uses the city's published figure. Rush hour on I-45, I-69 and the West Loop can double any of these times.
Why is Houston such a busy private aviation market?
The Greater Houston Partnership calls the city the Energy Capital of the World and describes an ecosystem that runs from oil and gas majors and oilfield services to renewables, hydrogen and carbon capture (Greater Houston Partnership, energy). That industry mix produces a particular kind of travel: executives visiting production sites in places airlines serve poorly, engineering teams moving between offices, and deal teams flying to Calgary, Mexico City or Aberdeen on short notice.

Those trips explain why a private jet Houston booking so often involves smaller airports at both ends. A day trip to a field office in the Permian Basin or a refinery town on the Gulf Coast can be done privately in a day, where the airline alternative needs a connection and an overnight. For a small team, a shared midsize jet can make the economics work against several business-class seats plus hotel nights. Our guide to corporate private jet charter explains how companies set travel policies around it.
Hobby, Bush and Ellington: the city-run airports
The City of Houston runs three airports, and each plays a different role for private flyers.

Hobby: the downtown and Medical Center choice
Hobby sits south of downtown, about 21 km (13 miles) by road, and roughly 19 km (12 miles) from the Texas Medical Center. For a downtown meeting, a hospital visit or Clear Lake and the NASA area, it is usually the quickest option. It is also the best launch point for the Gulf Coast: the Galveston cruise terminal is about 68 km (42 miles) away, around an hour by car. Our Port of Galveston transfers page covers that run for families combining a charter with a cruise.
Hobby is a busy airline airport too, so the private side works through FBOs on the field. Your operator will name the FBO in the quote, and that is the address your chauffeur needs.
Bush Intercontinental: for heavy jets and connections
Bush Intercontinental handled more than 48 million passengers in 2025 according to the airport system, which tells you its priority: airlines. Private aircraft still use it, especially larger jets on intercontinental missions and travelers connecting from a commercial long-haul flight to a private hop. For destinations north of the city, it is well placed: The Woodlands is about 39 km (24 miles) by road.
For the Galleria or downtown, IAH usually means a longer drive than Hobby or Sugar Land, so choose it for aircraft size or connections rather than convenience.
Ellington: the specialist field
Ellington Airport, about 15 miles south of downtown in straight-line terms, supports military, NASA and general aviation operations and is home to the Houston Spaceport, the tenth FAA-licensed commercial spaceport in the US, according to the airport system. It is not a typical choice for visiting business jets, but it is worth knowing about for trips to Clear Lake and the Johnson Space Center area, where it sits closer than Hobby. By road it is about 38 km (23 miles) from downtown. Ask your operator whether services at Ellington suit your aircraft and arrival time before choosing it.
Is Sugar Land the best Houston FBO airport for the Galleria?
For the west side, it often is. Sugar Land Regional says its focus is corporate aviation, that it is the fourth largest airport in the greater Houston area, and that it serves as a designated reliever for Bush Intercontinental and Hobby. Its 8,000-foot runway is longer than any runway at Hobby, with an instrument landing system and a control tower; the airport is open around the clock, with services from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. and after-hours service on advance notice, according to the city.

The city publishes approximate drive times that make the case clearly: the Galleria is about 18.1 miles (around 23 minutes) away, downtown about 25.2 miles (around 30 minutes), Hobby about 33.9 miles and Bush Intercontinental about 44.2 miles (City of Sugar Land, airport FAQ). The Energy Corridor along I-10 west is about 24 km (15 miles) by our routing. Those published times reflect light traffic; plan for more at rush hour.
US Customs and Border Protection service is available at Sugar Land, which makes it a practical Houston FBO choice for flights returning from Mexico or Latin America. The airport's FBO is GlobalSelect.

Conroe-North Houston: The Woodlands and Lake Conroe
Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport, formerly Lone Star Executive, hosts more than 300 aircraft and 240 hangars, a control tower, a general aviation terminal and two FBOs, Galaxy FBO among them. For The Woodlands, it is about 27 km (17 miles) by road, often 25 to 40 minutes, which beats driving up from IAH at peak times.
It also has a US Customs Federal Inspection Station. Regular hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday to Friday; arrivals outside those hours, at weekends or on holidays carry overtime charges, with an after-hours officer provided by Montgomery County and a fee based on aircraft weight (Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport, US Customs).
How much does a Houston private jet charter cost?
Pricing depends on aircraft size, flight hours, positioning, waiting and fees. Business Jet Traveler, reporting JetASAP marketplace quote data, gave average hourly charter rates of roughly US$3,800 to US$4,100 for turboprops, US$6,600 to US$7,000 for light jets, US$7,800 to US$8,100 for midsize jets and US$12,500 to US$14,000 for heavy jets across reports from November 2022 (Business Jet Traveler) and January 2023 (Business Jet Traveler). Turboprops deserve a look from Houston: for short hops to Gulf Coast and Permian Basin airfields, they often reach shorter runways economically.
| Aircraft category | Typical Houston mission | Reported average hourly range (US$) |
|---|---|---|
| Turboprop | Short hops to field offices and Gulf Coast towns | About 3,800 to 4,100 |
| Light jet | Dallas, Austin, New Orleans | About 6,600 to 7,000 |
| Midsize jet | Denver, Mexico City, Atlanta | About 7,800 to 8,100 |
| Heavy jet | Calgary, New York, transatlantic | About 12,500 to 14,000 |
International trips add US taxes. For 2026, the IRS sets the international air travel facilities tax at $23.40 per person for flights that begin or end in the United States, alongside the 7.5% tax on taxable domestic transportation (IRS Publication 510). Your operator's quote should show taxes as separate lines.
LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com acts as your booking agent; every flight is operated by a licensed Part 135 air carrier that holds operational control. The FAA's Safe Air Charter program explains why that matters and links to the current list of FAA-certificated charter operators (FAA, Safe Air Charter).
What does a well-run Houston ground plan look like?
Houston's distances reward a car that stays with you. A visiting executive landing at Sugar Land at 8 a.m. might have a 9 a.m. meeting in the Energy Corridor, lunch downtown and a 4 p.m. departure from Hobby. Three separate transfers would work, but an hourly chauffeur who holds the bags and adjusts as meetings run long is simpler.
- Site visits and long drives. Some trips are faster by road than by air once you count airport time. Our long distance car service covers runs to Austin or Beaumont.
- Teams and equipment. Engineering crews with cases fit a Sprinter van with driver better than two sedans.
- Executives and guests. For board members or clients, our executive chauffeur service and meet and greet at the FBO keep arrivals smooth.
Free waiting time is included: 60 minutes after international landings, 30 after domestic landings and 15 minutes for other pickups.
How to book the jet and the car
- Start with the first meeting's address and choose the airport from the table.
- Request the flight through our private jet charter form with dates, passengers, bags and any international legs.
- Book the car with the tail number and FBO on the online booker, or call (877) 860-3388. The chauffeur tracks the aircraft, not an airline flight.
- Plan the onward trip. Calgary, Mexico City or London legs can be covered by our global chauffeur service so the same desk handles both ends.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best airport for a private jet to downtown Houston?
Hobby is usually closest, about 21 km (13 miles) by road and often 25 to 50 minutes. Sugar Land publishes a drive of about 25 miles to downtown and is better for the Galleria and the west side. Bush Intercontinental is farther for downtown but suits heavy jets and airline connections.
Can I clear customs at a Houston general aviation airport?
Yes. Sugar Land Regional and Conroe-North Houston Regional both offer US Customs service. Conroe's regular hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, with overtime charges outside them. Your operator arranges clearance when the flight is booked, so confirm arrival times early.
Which airport is closest to The Woodlands?
Conroe-North Houston Regional is about 27 km (17 miles) by road from The Woodlands, often 25 to 40 minutes. Bush Intercontinental is about 39 km (24 miles) and suits larger aircraft. We book cars from both through our Houston limo service.
Are turboprops a good option for Houston trips?
Often, for short regional missions. Published averages for turboprops have been well below light-jet rates, and they can reach smaller airfields near field offices. For longer trips or more speed, a light or midsize jet is the better fit. The licensed operator advises on aircraft suitability.
Does LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com operate the flights?
No. We act as your booking agent, and every flight is operated by a licensed Part 135 air carrier that holds operational control. We confirm the operator and aircraft in writing and book the chauffeured cars through our corporate car service and private jet desks.
How far ahead should I book the car for a Houston private jet arrival?
Book it when you book the flight, then send the tail number and FBO. The chauffeur tracks the aircraft and waits free for 30 minutes after domestic landings and 60 after international ones. Ground bookings cancelled more than 72 hours before pickup carry no charge.
