London private jet charter starts with a decision New Yorkers and Parisians rarely face: which airport? Teterboro and Le Bourget each dominate their cities, but London's business flights are spread across Farnborough in Hampshire, Luton in Bedfordshire, Biggin Hill on the Kent border and RAF Northolt in the western suburbs, plus the big airline airports.
Each one suits a different kind of trip. Opening hours, runway length, customs arrangements and the road into Mayfair all vary. Pick the wrong one and a 40-minute flight from Paris can be followed by a two-hour crawl through traffic, or a late return can bump into an airport closing time. This guide sets out the differences in plain terms. If you are already booked into Farnborough and only need the car, our Farnborough FBO page covers the airport's rules for visiting vehicles.
Which airport is best for a London private jet charter?
No single airport wins. Farnborough suits the West End, Surrey and Berkshire and is purpose-built for business aviation. Luton has a 24-hour FBO with customs on site and suits north London and late arrivals. Biggin Hill is closest to the City and Canary Wharf. RAF Northolt is nearest west London but is a military airfield.
The right answer depends on three things: where you are staying, what time you need to fly, and the size of the aircraft. A family heading to a Mayfair hotel on a Saturday morning, a banker due at Canary Wharf at 8 a.m., and a group flying long-haul in a large-cabin jet will often end up at three different airports.
| Airport | Opening hours (published) | Distance to central London | Typical drive to Mayfair | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Farnborough (FAB) | 07:00 to 22:00 weekdays; 08:00 to 20:00 weekends and bank holidays | about 56 km (35 miles) | 60 to 110 min | West End, Surrey, Berkshire, Ascot, Windsor |
| London Luton (LTN) | Signature FBO open 24 hours | about 48 km (30 miles) | 60 to 100 min | North London, the M1 corridor, late or very early flights |
| London Biggin Hill (BQH) | 06:30 to 23:00 weekdays; 08:00 to 22:00 weekends and public holidays | about 27 km (17 miles) | 60 to 90 min | The City, Canary Wharf, south-east London, Kent |
| RAF Northolt | Military airfield; civil use by arrangement | about 20 km (12 to 13 miles) | 40 to 75 min | West London when access is granted |
Hours and distances come from the sources cited in each section below; drive times are typical ranges and lengthen sharply in the weekday rush.
Farnborough: London's purpose-built business airport
Farnborough is run as a business aviation airport rather than an airline one, so the whole operation is built around private and corporate flights. Its airfield specifications list a 45-meter-wide runway with take-off runs of around 2,000 meters in each direction, comfortably long enough for most business jets.

The constraint is time. Rushmoor Borough Council, which oversees the airport's planning permission, states that flights may operate between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at weekends and on bank holidays, except in an emergency, with no flying on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. A Sunday evening return from the south of France therefore needs to land before 8 p.m., or your broker will propose another field.
The Farnborough private jet drive to central London is about 56 km (35 miles) via the M3, normally 60 to 110 minutes. The same road makes Farnborough the natural choice for Royal Ascot, about 25 km (15 miles) away, and for Windsor. Farnborough also hosts the Farnborough International Airshow; the organizer is already promoting its 2028 edition, so check dates before planning a July trip in an airshow year.
London Luton: the round-the-clock option
London Luton is a busy airline airport, but it also has a large business aviation operation on the other side of the field. Signature Aviation's Luton FBO says it is open 24 hours a day, every day, with customs and immigration on site, and describes the airport as about 30 miles from central London.

That makes Luton private jet flights the default when timing is awkward: a very early departure, a late-night arrival from the Middle East or a weekend return outside Farnborough's hours. Luton also suits travelers heading to north London, Hertfordshire or anywhere up the M1. The drive to Mayfair is typically 60 to 100 minutes; the M1 and the North Circular decide the rest.
The trade-off is atmosphere. You share the airfield with airline traffic, and the approach roads can be busy at holiday peaks. Inside the FBO the experience is private, but plan the car pickup carefully on peak airline days.
Biggin Hill: closest to the City
London Biggin Hill is a business aviation airport inside Greater London, on its south-east edge. Its airfield specification lists opening hours of 06:30 to 23:00 on weekdays and 08:00 to 22:00 at weekends and on public holidays, and a single 1,806-meter runway.

That runway is shorter than Farnborough's, which matters for larger jets on long sectors; your operator will check performance before proposing Biggin Hill. For the City, Canary Wharf and south-east London, though, it is often the quickest door-to-door choice. The road distance to central London is roughly 27 km (17 miles), but traffic through south London means 60 to 90 minutes is a realistic expectation for Mayfair.
RAF Northolt: close, but by arrangement
RAF Northolt in west London is a military station. The Royal Air Force says it is used by both military and civilian aircraft and that commercial activity accounts for a significant volume of its movements. Civil access is controlled and not guaranteed, so treat Northolt as an option your operator may be able to arrange rather than a default.
When it is available, the appeal is obvious: central London is about 20 km (12 to 13 miles) away along the A40, typically 40 to 75 minutes. Expect stricter security procedures than at a civil FBO, and confirm in advance exactly where and how the car can meet passengers.
What about Heathrow, Stansted and London City?
Heathrow, Stansted and London City are airline airports that can also handle private aircraft through their own handling agents, subject to slots and the airport's rules. Ask your broker how they compare for your aircraft and timing. If any of your party arrives on a scheduled flight, our Heathrow car service covers airline arrivals and connections to the private group.

Entering the UK by private jet
Private passengers face the same entry rules as airline passengers. The UK government says most visitors now need either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation, including travelers from Europe and the United States. Each person needs their own, including babies and children, and the ETA costs £20 when bought through the official service. British and Irish passport holders do not need one.
The aircraft side has its own checks. Every flight is operated by a licensed carrier that holds operational control, and an operator based outside the UK needs the relevant UK permissions to fly you commercially. Ask your broker to confirm the operator's name, certificate and permissions before you sign.
What does a London private jet charter cost?
London quotes are usually in pounds or euros and depend on aircraft class, positioning and the airport's landing and handling charges. As a rough comparison with the US market, Business Jet Traveler's January 2023 marketplace figures showed average hourly rates ranging from roughly US$6,600 for light jets to roughly US$10,200 for super-midsize jets. They are a reference range, not a quote for London.
Airport choice affects the bill more than people expect. A slightly longer drive into town is sometimes worth a cheaper handling fee or a jet already based at that airport, which avoids positioning costs. Ask for two quotes, one per airport, when your plans allow.
| Trip type | Airport often chosen | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Paris, Geneva or Nice for a day | Farnborough or Biggin Hill | Short sectors, quick FBO exits |
| Gulf or long-haul late arrival | Luton | 24-hour FBO and customs on site |
| City or Canary Wharf meetings | Biggin Hill | Shortest road time to the east of London |
| Royal Ascot or Windsor | Farnborough | About 25 to 35 km (15 to 22 miles) by road |
Driving into central London
Every route into the West End meets the same constraints. Transport for London charges an £18 daily Congestion Charge if paid on the day or in advance, from 07:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends and on bank holidays. Professional chauffeur operators account for the charge and other city rules when they price the trip.
A private jet car service books the car against the aircraft rather than a clock time, so early or late landings simply move the pickup. Our free waiting time is 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic flight. For a day of meetings in Mayfair and the City, an hourly chauffeur is usually easier than separate transfers; our guide to booking a chauffeur by the hour in London shows how a typical day runs. For multi-meeting investor days, the roadshow car service is built for tight schedules.
Our London chauffeur service covers hotels, restaurants and St Pancras for Eurostar. Summer brings the season's big events; our guide to Wimbledon and Royal Ascot chauffeur planning and the Wimbledon transport page explain how to time those days.

Frequently asked questions
Which London airport is closest to central London for private jets?
RAF Northolt is the closest, about 20 km (12 to 13 miles) from central London, but it is a military airfield and civil access is by arrangement. Among the civil options, Biggin Hill is roughly 27 km (17 miles) from the center and best placed for the City and Canary Wharf. Farnborough is farther out but convenient for the West End via the M3.
What are Farnborough Airport's opening hours?
Farnborough's planning permission allows flights between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. on weekdays and between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at weekends and on bank holidays, except in an emergency. There is no flying on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. If your return falls outside those hours, your broker will usually suggest Luton or Biggin Hill instead.
Can I fly into London by private jet late at night?
Yes, but choose the airport carefully. Signature's FBO at London Luton is open 24 hours with customs on site, which makes Luton the usual answer for late arrivals. Biggin Hill is open until 23:00 on weekdays and 22:00 at weekends. Farnborough closes at 22:00 on weekdays and 20:00 at weekends.
Do private jet passengers need a UK ETA?
The UK's entry rules apply to everyone, however they arrive. Most visitors who do not need a visa, including travelers from Europe and the United States, need an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Each passenger needs their own, including children, and the official fee is £20. British and Irish passport holders are exempt.
How long is the drive from Farnborough to Mayfair?
Farnborough is about 56 km (35 miles) from central London. The drive via the M3 usually takes 60 to 110 minutes depending on the time of day, with weekday rush hours the slowest. Booking the car against the aircraft's tail number means the chauffeur adjusts automatically if the flight lands early or late.
Is Biggin Hill suitable for large private jets?
Biggin Hill has a single runway of 1,806 meters, shorter than Farnborough's, so heavier aircraft on long sectors may need more runway than it offers. Your operator checks aircraft performance, weight and weather before proposing the airport. If Biggin Hill does not work, Farnborough or Luton are the usual alternatives.
