An Aspen private jet trip promises the shortest possible gap between a city and a ski lift: Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) sits a few miles from town, and the drive from the ramp to a slopeside hotel is short. That convenience comes with conditions. ASE has a strict nightly curfew, a hard limit on wingspan, a ramp that fills up during the holidays, and, from April to November 2027, no runway at all.

This guide explains each of those constraints in the order a planner meets them, then covers the two alternates that matter, Eagle County (EGE) and Rifle (RIL), and the winter ground transport that turns a good flight into a good arrival.

Request a charter quote

Can a private jet fly into Aspen at any time?

No. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is closed from 23:00 to 07:00, departures must leave by 22:30, and quieter Stage III aircraft only may operate between 30 minutes after sunset and 23:00. The airport also closes completely from April 4 to November 19, 2027, for runway reconstruction.

The hours come from Pitkin County's noise and curfew rules. The tower is staffed from 07:00 to 20:00; from 20:00 to 23:00 the airport is uncontrolled. Stage I aircraft are prohibited outright, and older, noisier Stage II aircraft are limited to the window from 07:00 until 30 minutes after sunset.

Night operations add pilot requirements. For general aviation flights between 30 minutes after sunset and 23:00, a visual arrival requires an instrument-equipped aircraft, an instrument-rated pilot and at least one takeoff or landing at ASE in the previous 12 months. Instrument procedures need an air traffic control clearance. In practice, a charter operator with mountain-qualified crews will usually plan a daylight arrival, and you should too.

What this means for your itinerary:

  • Leave margin on the outbound leg. If your flight from the coasts slips by two hours on a winter afternoon, you may arrive after dark and fall into the stricter window, or miss the curfew entirely.
  • A late dinner is not a late departure. With departures ending at 22:30, an evening flight home has to be planned as a morning one if anything runs long.
  • Curfew violations have consequences. The county can pursue enforcement and fines, and violations count against operators in its Fly With Integrity noise program.

What aircraft can land at Aspen? The 95-foot wingspan limit

The runway work Pitkin County has planned exists partly because of geometry. According to the county's runway reconstruction FAQs, the current wingspan limit at ASE is 95 feet. The airfield does not meet the FAA's required 400-foot separation between runway and taxiway centerlines for Airplane Design Group III, which is why the runway will shift about 80 feet west and widen from 100 to 150 feet. After reconstruction, aircraft with wingspans of 118 feet or less will be accommodated.

For passengers, the 95-foot rule decides which jets your operator can offer. Light, midsize and super-midsize jets sit comfortably inside it. Some of the largest long-range business jets do not, so a family that normally flies a large-cabin aircraft may be offered a smaller one for Aspen or an alternate airport for the big jet. If you are comparing cabins, our series guide to private jet sizes explains what each class carries.

Two other numbers shape the plan:

  • Hangar space. Atlantic Aviation, the FBO that handles every Aspen airport private jet arrival, lists heated hangar space for aircraft up to a Gulfstream G450 on its Atlantic Aviation Aspen page. Larger aircraft may have to park outside or reposition.
  • Landing fees. The airport's pilot information page lists the general aviation landing fee at a rate of US$13.76 per 1,000 lbs of maximum takeoff weight, so the fee scales with aircraft size.

Altitude and winter weather matter too, but they are the crew's domain. A reputable Part 135 operator decides whether an aircraft and crew are suitable for ASE on a given day, including performance on a cold, snowy runway. If the operator says Rifle instead of Aspen, that is a safety call, not a sales tactic.

The 2027 Aspen airport closure: what changes

Mark this one in the calendar now. Pitkin County's 2027 closure page states that ASE closes on Sunday, April 4, 2027, at 23:00 and reopens on Friday, November 19, 2027, at 19:00, closed to both commercial and general aviation. The work is a voter-approved runway reconstruction and shift. The county's FAQs add that helicopters will also be excluded during that period.

The good news is timing. The closure starts after the core ski season and ends before Thanksgiving, so the 2026–27 and 2027–28 winters remain open. Summer is what changes: every 2027 summer event weekend in Aspen will require an alternate airport.

During the closure, the county names Rifle Garfield County Airport (RIL) as the general aviation alternate. Helicopter operators are told to seek parking at Glenwood Springs or Rifle, and the county notes that helicopters are generally prohibited from landing on public or private land in Pitkin County outside the airport. A helicopter hop from Rifle to a private property near Aspen is therefore not a workaround; plan on a car.

Aspen vs Eagle (EGE) vs Rifle (RIL): which airport?

Most Aspen trips should land at ASE when it is open, conditions allow and the aircraft fits. The alternates earn their place when one of those three tests fails.

The Rifle distance comes from the Rifle Garfield County Airport site, which describes the field as the preferred alternate for both Aspen and Eagle and lists Atlantic Aviation as its FBO. The Eagle drive time is a typical estimate for clear roads; snow can extend both drives considerably.

When Eagle County makes sense

EGE, in Gypsum west of Vail, is where an Eagle Vail private jet trip lands, the natural choice when Vail or Beaver Creek is the destination, and a sensible one for Aspen-bound flights arriving from outside the United States. The airport's US Customs page explains that the CBP office is inside the Signature Aviation FBO, that three hours' advance notice is required for all aircraft, that EGE is a user-fee airport, and that eAPIS manifests are required for international arrivals and departures. The operator files the manifests; your job is to send passport details in good time.

When Rifle makes sense

Rifle is the diversion field. When snow, wind or low cloud closes ASE, crews often plan RIL as the alternate from the start. If you are flying in during a storm cycle, ask the operator which alternate is filed and book a car that can be redirected, rather than discovering the change on the ground.

How do you get from the airport to Aspen in winter?

Winter ground transport in the Roaring Fork Valley is about vehicles, drivers and flexibility more than distance. To see what the transfer costs for your dates, use the booker below; you approve the exact fare before paying.

The right vehicle

Aspen arrivals carry skis, boot bags and winter luggage, which outgrow a sedan quickly. A full-size four-wheel-drive SUV with snow-rated tires is the default for up to three or four passengers with ski gear. Families and groups usually need two SUVs or a Sprinter van with driver, and a dedicated luggage vehicle is common when a midsize jet's hold meets a long weekend's worth of equipment.

Planeside or terminal

At ASE, Atlantic's FBO handles private arrivals. Your chauffeur's details are sent to the FBO before landing so the car can be positioned where the FBO allows, often at the aircraft. Our private jet car service page explains the handover, and the sibling explainer on what an FBO is covers what happens inside.

Diversions and long transfers

If the flight diverts to Rifle or Eagle, the trip becomes a mountain drive of an hour or more. That is where a long-distance car service mindset helps: an experienced winter driver, water and blankets in the car, and live road information. Free waiting covers normal delays (30 minutes after domestic arrivals, 60 after international ones), and the desk tracks the flight so a diversion is picked up quickly.

During your stay

Many guests keep a car on an hourly chauffeur basis for dinner reservations and transfers between Aspen, Snowmass and private homes, especially when snow makes parking and driving unappealing. For principals with household staff and security, our family office chauffeur service plans the whole stay as one schedule.

Holiday ramp space and other peak-week realities

Aspen's busiest private aviation weeks are predictable. Atlantic's Aspen page warns that it anticipates additional ramp compression over Thanksgiving (November 25–29, 2026) and from December 24, 2026, to January 3, 2027. Ramp compression means less space to park aircraft on the ground, which can lead operators to drop passengers and reposition the aircraft to another airport until the return flight.

Plan for these consequences:

  1. Book the aircraft first, then the house. Aircraft and parking are scarcer than rentals over the holidays.
  2. Expect drop-and-go. Your aircraft may leave after dropping you and return for the departure. The repositioning flights appear in the quote.
  3. Fix the departure time early. With a 22:30 departure limit and crowded ramps, last-minute changes on New Year's Day are hard to accommodate.
  4. Think about Rifle deliberately. If your aircraft is too large for ASE or parking is full, landing at Rifle and driving can be faster door to door than waiting for an Aspen slot.

For a broader view of mountain resorts, our series guide to ski resort private travel compares Aspen with Courchevel and St Moritz.

How to book an Aspen private jet with ground transport

We arrange the flight as your booking agent, never as the airline. The aircraft is flown by a licensed air carrier, such as an FAA Part 135 operator, that holds operational control and makes the safety decisions, including whether ASE is suitable for the aircraft and the day. The ground leg is delivered by a vetted, licensed local operator and confirmed by the same desk.

  • Start with dates and passengers. Include ski and luggage counts, any pets, and whether anyone flies in separately. Submit through the charter request form or call (877) 860-3388.
  • Ask for the alternate plan. Request quotes that state the filed alternate and any repositioning for holiday parking.
  • Book the vehicles on the online booker. The exact fare is shown before you confirm. If you are connecting through Colorado's Front Range, our Denver limo service handles that end.
  • Share the house address and gate codes privately. Drivers need them for private driveways, and they never appear on a name board.

Frequently asked questions

What time does Aspen airport close at night?

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport is closed from 23:00 to 07:00 local time, and the last departure must leave by 22:30. Between 30 minutes after sunset and 23:00, only quieter Stage III aircraft may operate, and visual arrivals at night carry extra pilot requirements. Plan flights to arrive in daylight when you can.

Can a Gulfstream land at Aspen?

It depends on the model. ASE currently limits wingspan to 95 feet, and Atlantic's hangar there takes aircraft up to a Gulfstream G450. Some of the largest long-range business jets exceed the wingspan limit. After the runway reconstruction, the limit rises to 118 feet. Your operator will confirm whether a specific aircraft is permitted.

Where do private jets land when Aspen airport is closed in 2027?

Pitkin County names Rifle Garfield County Airport as the general aviation alternate for the April 4 to November 19, 2027, closure. Rifle is about 61 miles from Aspen. Eagle County Regional, west of Vail, is another option, especially for international arrivals that need customs. Both mean a mountain drive to Aspen.

Is Eagle or Rifle closer to Aspen?

Rifle is listed at about 61 miles from Aspen by its own website, and Eagle County Regional is a longer drive through Glenwood Springs. Choose Eagle if you also need customs or are heading to Vail or Beaver Creek, and Rifle if Aspen is the only destination or your aircraft cannot use ASE.

What car should I book for a winter arrival in Aspen?

Book a full-size four-wheel-drive SUV with snow tires for up to three or four passengers with skis, and add a second SUV or a Sprinter van for larger groups or heavy luggage. If your flight might divert to Rifle or Eagle, tell the desk so the booking can follow the aircraft.

Can a helicopter take me from Rifle to my Aspen home?

Generally not. Pitkin County says helicopters are generally prohibited from landing on public or private land in the county outside the airport, and the airport itself is closed to helicopters during the 2027 reconstruction. A chauffeured SUV is the practical link between Rifle and Aspen.
