A Miami private jet charter rarely lands at the airline airport. Most private flights into the region use Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport north-west of the city, or Fort Lauderdale Executive a little farther up the coast, with Miami International and a handful of smaller fields filling specific needs. Which one makes sense depends on your hotel, your arrival time, whether you need customs, and how busy South Florida is that week.

That last point matters for anyone planning a private jet Miami trip. Miami's calendar has a few weeks a year when private aviation demand spikes and ramps fill, most famously Art Basel Miami Beach in December and the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix in spring. This guide covers the airports, customs, costs, peak weeks and the ground logistics that make or break the trip.

Which airport should a private jet use in Miami?

For most private flights to Miami, Miami-Opa locka Executive (OPF) is the default: it is the largest of Miami-Dade County's general aviation airports, is about 12 miles north-west of downtown and has customs on site. Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE) suits Broward County stays, and MIA mainly serves airline connections.

Miami-Dade Aviation Department describes Opa-locka as the largest of the county's general aviation airports and a reliever for Miami International. The county also runs Miami Executive (TMB) in the south, convenient for south Miami-Dade and the drive to the Florida Keys. Fort Lauderdale Executive sits in Broward County, the next county north, and is often the better choice for Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton or a yacht at Port Everglades.

Miami-Opa locka Executive: the private jet workhorse

Opa-locka has a long aviation history. The county's airport page records that Glenn Curtiss founded it in 1927, that it later became a naval air station, and that it was renamed Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport in 2014. It covers 1,810 acres with three runways, the longest 8,002 feet, long enough for large-cabin business jets.

The same page lists three FBOs: Atlantic Aviation, Fontainebleau Aviation and Signature Flight Support. Your operator chooses the Opa-locka FBO based on its contracts, fuel and parking, and the choice sets the pickup point for your car. The airport is attended around the clock, while the FAA control tower is listed as operating from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. local time.

For ground timing, the county page gives typical drive times from Opa-locka of about 30 minutes to Miami Beach, 35 minutes to downtown Miami, 20 minutes to Miami International and 10 minutes to Hard Rock Stadium. Treat those as off-peak figures. On a Friday afternoon or a Basel evening, double them.

Fort Lauderdale Executive: the Broward alternative

Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE) is a general aviation airport on the north side of Fort Lauderdale. Private flyers choose it for stays in Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and the beach towns of Broward and south Palm Beach counties, and for yacht boardings at Port Everglades.

The drive matters. From FXE, downtown Fort Lauderdale and Las Olas are roughly 11 km (7 miles), usually 15 to 30 minutes. Miami Beach is about 50 km (31 miles) south, typically 45 to 90 minutes on I-95 or the coastal roads. If your plans are mostly in Miami Beach, Opa-locka usually saves time; if they are split between the two cities, FXE and an hourly chauffeur can be the more relaxed combination.

Farther north, Palm Beach has its own private aviation scene. Our Palm Beach PBI private aviation page covers that airport and its car logistics.

Miami International and the other options

Miami International (MIA) is an airline hub first, but the county notes that its general aviation center houses US Customs and Border Protection, clearing arriving international private and charter flights. Private flyers mostly encounter MIA when someone in the party connects to or from an airline flight. Our Miami International car service and Fort Lauderdale airport car service handle airline arrivals that need to meet a private group.

In the south of the county, Miami Executive (TMB) is the quieter alternative. Miami-Dade Aviation Department describes it as about 15 minutes from the business centers of south Miami-Dade and close to the Florida Keys, the Everglades and Biscayne National Park. For a family heading to Coral Gables, Pinecrest or a boat in the Keys, it can remove the slowest part of the drive. The trade-off is distance from Miami Beach, so it rarely suits a South Beach hotel stay.

Public figures, executives and family offices often favor the smaller fields for the same reason: fewer people, shorter walks and a car waiting a few steps from the lounge. What actually protects a high-profile arrival is the routine around it, not the airport name. That means a confirmed tail number shared only with the people who need it, a chauffeur bound by confidentiality, a plain vehicle and a fallback plan if photographers appear at the gate. Our VIP and celebrity chauffeur service is built around that routine.

Customs: arriving in Miami from abroad

Many Miami private flights come from the Caribbean, Latin America or Europe, so customs timing is central. Miami-Dade's Opa-locka page lists US Customs as available from 9:00 a.m. to midnight daily, with one hour's advance notification through air traffic control and extended hours available on a three-hour advance request. Confirm the current arrangements through your operator when it books landing rights, because hours can change.

Two practical points follow. A late-evening return from the islands should be planned to land within customs hours, or the crew will need to request extended service. And the pickup point can differ from the FBO's front door if passengers are processed elsewhere on the field, so tell the chauffeur to wait for a call from the crew or the FBO. For a fuller explanation of eAPIS, landing rights and arrival rules, see our guide to flying private to the Bahamas and the Caribbean, which covers the outbound side of these trips.

What does a Miami private jet charter cost?

You pay for the aircraft's time and the fees around it, so Miami pricing follows the aircraft rather than the airport. For orientation only, Business Jet Traveler reported January 2023 marketplace averages that ranged from about US$4,100 an hour for turboprops to about US$12,500 an hour for heavy jets. In Miami's busiest weeks aircraft and parking are harder to find, so treat any published figure as orientation, not a quote.

Common line items on a Miami quote:

  • Positioning if the aircraft is based outside South Florida.
  • FBO handling and parking, which vary by FBO and by how long the aircraft stays.
  • Crew overnights for multi-day stays.
  • Federal excise taxes on US domestic legs: for 2026 the FAA lists the domestic passenger ticket tax at 7.5% plus $5.30 per passenger per segment, and a separate per-passenger tax applies to international arrivals and departures.

Every flight we arrange is operated by a licensed carrier holding operational control, and the quote names that operator and the aircraft before you commit.

Peak weeks: Art Basel, Formula 1 and the winter season

Two events dominate Miami's private aviation calendar.

Art Basel Miami Beach. The fair's official site lists the 2026 show for December 4 to 6 in Miami Beach. In the days around it, private arrivals, gallery dinners and hotel traffic all converge on the causeways. Book the aircraft, the FBO and the cars as one plan, as early as possible. Our Art Basel Miami Beach transportation page and the guide to Art Basel private travel go into detail on timing.

Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. The organizer lists the 2027 race for April 30 to May 2, 2027 at the Miami International Autodrome around Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Opa-locka is the obvious airport for race weekend, being about 10 minutes from the stadium off-peak, which is exactly why its ramps fill. Expect road closures and heavy traffic near the circuit, and plan car drop-offs around the event's published access rules.

Beyond those weeks, winter brings steady demand from travelers escaping the north, and holiday periods are busy for Caribbean departures. If you can be flexible by a day or two around peaks, ask your broker to compare prices.

On the ground: making the car work in Miami

South Florida traffic, causeway bridges and event closures mean the car plan deserves as much care as the flight. A few rules of thumb from Miami trips:

  • Book against the tail number. A private jet car service tracks the aircraft, so early or late landings move the pickup automatically. Free waiting is 60 minutes after international landings and 30 minutes after domestic ones.
  • Match the vehicle to the bags. Beach and yacht trips mean more luggage than city trips. An SUV or an executive Sprinter with a driver avoids a second car.
  • Use hourly service for event days. For Basel evenings or race weekend, an hourly car that stays with you beats hailing rides through closures. Our guide to chauffeur by the hour in Miami shows how to plan a full day.
  • Plan the yacht or cruise hand-off. Transfers to PortMiami or Port Everglades should be booked to the specific terminal or marina.

Our Miami limo service and Fort Lauderdale limo service pages cover city-wide transfers, and the luxury chauffeur service is the right fit for principals and families who expect a senior chauffeur and a discreet vehicle.

How to book a Miami trip

  1. Send dates, passengers, luggage and your Miami address to the desk or through the charter request form.
  2. Choose the airport with your broker: OPF for Miami Beach and the city, FXE for Broward, TMB for the south.
  3. Confirm customs timing for any international leg.
  4. Book the car on the online booker, quoting the tail number. The exact fare shows before you confirm.
  5. In Basel or race weeks, confirm everything as early as you can and keep the plan in one place.

Ground bookings are free to cancel more than 72 hours ahead, 10% inside 72 hours, 50% inside 48 hours and 100% inside 24 hours or for a no-show. The desk is reachable around the clock on (877) 860-3388.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main private jet airport in Miami?

Miami-Opa locka Executive (OPF) is the main private jet airport for Miami. Miami-Dade Aviation Department calls it the largest of the county's general aviation airports, and it has three runways, several FBOs and customs on site. It is about 12 miles north-west of downtown, roughly 30 minutes from Miami Beach off-peak.

Is Fort Lauderdale Executive better than Opa-locka?

It depends on your destination. Fort Lauderdale Executive is usually better for Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and Port Everglades, where the drive is short. For Miami Beach, Brickell or Hard Rock Stadium, Opa-locka usually means a shorter drive. If your stay is split between both cities, either can work with an hourly chauffeur.

Does Opa-locka have customs for international private flights?

Yes. Miami-Dade's airport page lists US Customs at Opa-locka from 9:00 a.m. to midnight daily, with one hour's notice through air traffic control and extended hours available on a three-hour advance request. Your operator should confirm current arrangements when booking landing rights, especially for late returns from the Caribbean.

How busy is Miami during Art Basel?

Very. Art Basel Miami Beach runs December 4 to 6 in 2026, and the surrounding days bring heavy private aviation and road traffic. FBO parking, aircraft and chauffeured cars all book up early, and causeway traffic slows every transfer. Book the jet and the cars together, and allow extra time between appointments.

Which airport is best for the Miami Grand Prix?

Opa-locka is closest to Hard Rock Stadium, around 10 minutes off-peak according to the county, which makes it the natural choice for race weekend. That popularity means ramps and FBOs fill quickly, so book early. Expect road closures near the circuit and use an hourly car that can wait close to your entry point.

How much does a private jet to Miami cost?

Charter prices depend on aircraft size, distance and positioning rather than the Miami airport. As a reference, Business Jet Traveler's January 2023 marketplace averages ranged from about US$4,100 an hour for turboprops to about US$12,500 an hour for heavy jets. Busy event weeks can cost more, and taxes and fees come on top.
