WEF Davos transportation is harder than the distances suggest. Davos sits in a high Alpine valley in Graubünden with no airport of its own, and for one week every January it hosts heads of state, chief executives and their security teams. The Davos tourism office lists the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2027 for 18 to 22 January 2027 at the Davos Congress Centre, with about 3,000 participants expected.

Everyone arrives the same way: by air into a Swiss or nearby airport, then by road (or rail, or a tightly controlled helicopter) up the valley. This guide explains how the air side and the ground side work during WEF week, using the published rules from the 2026 meeting as the reference point, and how to plan the car so it is waiting when the aircraft door opens.

How do most delegates get to Davos for the WEF?

Most WEF attendees fly into Zurich, then drive about two hours to Davos via Landquart and the Prättigau valley. Private jets need an airport slot at Zurich and often must reposition elsewhere to park. Helicopter flights to Davos are tightly controlled, and every access road has security checks.

Zurich-Kloten is the practical gateway. The Davos tourism office puts it 156 km from Davos, and the Davos Klosters mountain resorts estimate about 2 hours by car from Zurich, depending on traffic. The route is the A3/A13 motorway toward Chur, off at Landquart, then cantonal road 28 through the Prättigau to Klosters and Davos.

Our WEF Davos conference transportation page covers the ground program itself. This article covers the aviation constraints that shape it, because in WEF week the aircraft schedule is usually the bottleneck.

Zurich vs Geneva private jet: which airport should you use?

The two big Swiss airports serve very different trips during WEF week.

Zurich (ZRH) is close, has a General Aviation Center with FBO reception, and is the default. It is also slot-regulated all year: a valid airport slot is needed before arrival or departure, and IFR slots are obtained through the dispatcher or the ground handling provider. During WEF the pressure on those slots and on ramp space is intense. If you are booking a Zurich private jet for that week, treat the slot and the parking as two separate confirmations, because one does not guarantee the other.

Geneva (GVA) is the better choice when Davos is one stop in a longer Swiss itinerary, for example private bank meetings in Geneva before or after the forum. Geneva requires prior permission (PPR) for operations not regulated by Slot Coordination Switzerland, with bookings opening five days in advance, mandatory ground handling for all aircraft, and the PPR number entered in item 18 of the flight plan. The catch is distance: the Davos tourism office lists Geneva at 419 km from Davos, which turns a Geneva private jet arrival into a half-day on the motorway even in good conditions.

Our airport guides cover the private terminals in detail: Geneva GVA private aviation and Zurich airport chauffeur pickups.

What did the 2026 rules say about parking and slots?

The clearest public statement of WEF-week constraints is the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation's regulations for state flights to WEF 2026. They were written for government aircraft needing diplomatic clearance, but they show how tight Zurich gets for everyone:

Stairs of a private jet
Stairs of a private jet
  • FOCA stated there was no guarantee of aircraft parking at Zurich and recommended alternates including Basel-Mulhouse, Friedrichshafen, Stuttgart, St. Gallen-Altenrhein, Bern and Milan-Malpensa.
  • A maximum of one aircraft per nation could be stationed at Zurich.
  • Aircraft with a wingspan over 17 meters, or without parking permission, could land no earlier than 14:00 local time.
  • Without parking authorization, an aircraft had to leave Zurich within two hours.
  • An airport slot was mandatory for all fixed-wing aircraft or IFR flights.

If governments get one parked aircraft each, private jets should assume the ramp is full. The common pattern is a drop-and-go: the jet lands at Zurich, passengers clear customs and step into the car, and the aircraft repositions to an airport with space, returning for the departure. Your charter operator plans this and holds operational control of the flight. LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com acts as your booking agent for the charter, and every flight is operated by a licensed air carrier.

For the car, a drop-and-go means the chauffeur must be planeside or at the FBO door at a precise time, because there is no slack for an aircraft that has two hours to leave. That is what our private jet car service is built around: the driver tracks the tail number and the handler's timings, not just the arrival board.

Can you fly a helicopter into Davos during WEF?

Only under tight control. The cantonal briefing for the 2026 meeting says the Federal Council imposed security restrictions on the airspace over Davos, that civil aircraft may fly through only on a limited basis once registered and identified, that authorization is given by the Swiss Air Force, and that helicopter traffic to Davos has to be controlled during the meeting.

The Graubünden police flight-restriction notice for 2026 described a restricted zone, LS-R90, reaching up to 35 nautical miles (about 65 km) from the center of Davos, including Liechtenstein airspace, from ground level to flight level 195. It ran from 16 January at 10 am to 24 January at 5 pm, and drones faced a separate geozone from 14 January.

FOCA's state-flight rules added that direct flights from abroad to the Davos heliport were not allowed and that prior authorization and Air Force accreditation were always required. In practice, a Davos helicopter transfer is something your aviation provider requests well in advance, with no guarantee of approval, and with the road plan kept as the fallback. Our sibling guide to helicopter transfers explains how these short hops are priced and booked in normal weeks.

What about Samedan? Engadin Airport is the closest fixed-wing airport to Davos on the map, but FOCA's 2026 rules required PPR and a briefing for flights there and barred filing Zurich or Geneva as the alternate. The Engadine side also connects to Klosters through the Vereina rail tunnel rather than a direct motorway, so check the ground timing before you choose it.

What happens on the road into Davos during WEF week?

There are no general travel restrictions, according to the cantonal authorities, and Davos is reachable by public transport or car. But expect three things:

  1. Security checks on all access roads. The authorities state that precautionary checks of people, vehicles and baggage take place on every route into Davos, run quickly, but can still cause delays.
  2. Security zones in town. For 2026 these covered the area around the Congress Center, Kongress Hotel and Hilton Garden Inn, the AlpenGold and Belvédère hotels, the ice rink, and the Lago heliport with its lake car park and meadow. Residents inside received badges and vehicle passes; all other hotels and shops stayed reachable.
  3. Winter driving. The Davos tourism office notes that snow chains may be required from Klosters onward during heavy snowfall (four-wheel-drive vehicles are exempt), and that Swiss motorways require a vignette, priced at CHF 40.

This is why a Davos chauffeur for WEF week should be a local or regional operator with winter-equipped vehicles, drivers who know the checkpoint routine, and a dispatcher who watches the cantonal traffic updates. A car hired in Zurich for a one-way drop is fine for the transfer, but the week itself is better served by a car and driver based in the valley on an hourly or as-directed basis.

How should you structure WEF Davos transportation for the week?

Think of WEF transport as three separate jobs, each with its own vehicle logic.

The transfer. Zurich airport or Zurich HB to Davos, roughly two hours. Book it as a fixed long-distance car service with flight tracking. For rail arrivals, the chauffeur meets you at Zurich main station or you ride SBB to Landquart and switch to the Rhaetian Railway, which is the route the Davos tourism office describes.

The in-town car. Sessions, bilateral meetings and dinners are spread between the Congress Centre and hotels up and down the valley. With checkpoints and security zones, the car rarely gets you to the door, so the value of a dedicated executive chauffeur lies in waiting nearby, rerouting when a zone tightens and keeping your schedule moving. Hourly booking beats a string of one-way rides here.

The group shuttle. Companies hosting receptions or a delegation often add a Sprinter van with driver for staff and guests, which keeps the executive car free for the principal.

For principals with protection details, the driver should be briefed before the week on the security lead's movement plan. Our conference transportation team coordinates this with the in-house travel or security office, and can add meet and greet at the airport so bags and passengers are separated from the drive.

Should you stay outside Davos and commute?

Some executives stay in Klosters or further down the Prättigau and commute in. It saves on accommodation but adds the drive and the checkpoint to every trip into Davos, so weigh the hotel savings against the hours in the car.

Others combine WEF with ski days or meetings elsewhere in the Alps. If that is your plan, our sibling guide to ski resort private travel covers jets and chauffeurs for St. Moritz, Courchevel and Aspen, and the Geneva chauffeur guide covers the banking and watch-week side of a Geneva stop.

A practical WEF week timeline

Working back from a Monday arrival:

  • Months ahead: confirm the aircraft, then the Zurich slot and parking (or the reposition airport) through the operator and handler. Request any helicopter permission at the same time.
  • Six to eight weeks ahead: lock the transfer and the in-town car. Share the passenger list, the security lead's contact and hotel locations with the chauffeur dispatcher.
  • One week ahead: reconfirm flight times, the handler and the FBO meeting point. Check the current cantonal notices and NOTAMs, since dates and zones can change.
  • Day of arrival: the chauffeur tracks the flight, meets planeside or at the FBO, and drives up the valley with chains aboard. Under our ground policy, free waiting is 60 minutes after international landings.
  • Departure day: leave buffer for the road checks and the drive down. Aircraft at overflow airports need their crew back in position before the passengers reach Zurich.

On cancellations, our ground policy is simple: more than 72 hours before pickup is free; inside 72 hours 10%; inside 48 hours 50%; inside 24 hours or a no-show 100%.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Davos from Zurich airport?

The Davos tourism office lists Zurich-Kloten at 156 km from Davos, and the regional mountain resorts estimate about two hours by car depending on traffic. In WEF week, add time for the security checks on the access roads and for snow on the last stretch from Klosters. Book the transfer with flight tracking so the car moves with your actual landing time.

Can my private jet park at Zurich during WEF?

Do not assume it. Zurich is slot-regulated year-round, and in WEF week ramp space is extremely limited. For state flights in 2026, FOCA allowed only one stationed aircraft per nation and required unparked aircraft to leave within two hours. Most private jets drop passengers and reposition to another airport, which your operator arranges through the handler.

Is Geneva a good airport for the World Economic Forum?

Only if Geneva is part of the trip. Geneva requires prior permission for business aviation movements, and it is about 419 km from Davos by the tourism office's figures, a much longer drive than from Zurich. It works well for executives with meetings in Geneva before or after the forum, paired with a Geneva chauffeur service and a long-distance transfer.

Can I take a helicopter from Zurich to Davos during WEF?

Possibly, but it is not something to rely on. Davos airspace is restricted during the meeting, civil flights need registration and Air Force authorization, and helicopter traffic to Davos is controlled. Ask your aviation provider to request it early and keep a confirmed car as the backup. The drive is the plan that always works.

Do I need snow chains or winter tires for the drive to Davos?

The Davos tourism office says chains may be required from Klosters onward during heavy snowfall, with four-wheel-drive vehicles exempt. A professional chauffeur operator in the region equips vehicles for winter as standard. If you drive yourself, carry chains and buy the Swiss motorway vignette before you set off.

Should I book a chauffeur by the hour in Davos?

For most WEF attendees, yes. Meetings are spread across the Congress Centre and hotels, security zones block direct drop-offs, and schedules change hourly. An hourly chauffeur waits nearby and adapts, which is far more reliable than calling separate rides between checkpoints during the busiest week of the Davos year.
