Booking a Cannes Film Festival chauffeur is less about the car and more about timing. For twelve days in May, a small seaside town absorbs an industry: buyers, sales agents, talent, publicists, press and the people who look after all of them. Roads around the Palais des Festivals are managed, the hotels are full, and every evening has two fixed moments that nobody is allowed to miss. This guide is written for the people who plan those days. It explains how the arrival works, how a gala evening is built backward from the ticket, what a car can and cannot do near the Croisette, and how to choose between transfers and hourly hire.
For the event overview, distances and vehicle classes, see our Cannes Film Festival transportation page. This article goes one level deeper into the planning.
What does a Cannes Film Festival chauffeur actually do?
A Cannes Film Festival chauffeur collects you at Nice or Cannes Mandelieu, keeps to a schedule built around screenings and meetings, drops you at the nearest permitted point to the Palais, and stages the return so you are not searching for a car on a crowded Croisette. Booked hourly, the same driver stays with you between appointments.
The job is mostly invisible. The chauffeur reads the day's access arrangements, knows which streets the Festival and the city have closed, carries the garment bag and the spare shoes, and positions the car where it can leave quickly. What the chauffeur cannot do is drive you onto the red carpet. Official arrivals on the steps are organized by the Festival, and no car service controls them.
When is the 2027 Festival, and why does accreditation matter for transport?
The official Festival de Cannes website lists the 80th edition for 11 to 22 May 2027. The Festival's FAQ is clear that it is an event for film industry professionals who need accreditation, that requests are made through a personal account from early February, and that badges can be collected from 11 May at the Gare Maritime or from automatic dispensers at La Pantiero.

That sequence matters for the car plan in three ways:
- Arrival day often includes a badge pickup. Build 30 to 60 minutes into the first afternoon for collecting credentials, and tell the desk so the chauffeur waits nearby rather than circling.
- The market and the screenings set different rhythms. Daytime is meetings across hotels, beach venues and the Palais. Evenings are galas and dinners. One car type rarely suits both.
- Teams arrive in waves. Sales companies and studios often land staff a day or two before talent. Booking all legs under one account keeps the plan coherent.
How do private flyers arrive: Nice or Cannes Mandelieu?
Most guests land at Nice Côte d'Azur, about 30 km (19 miles) from the Palais by road, normally 30 to 50 minutes and longer on the first and last days of the Festival. Nice's business aviation terminal has its own customs post, and business aviation handling there is limited to three FBOs. Our Nice Côte d'Azur private aviation page explains planeside meetings and handler coordination.

The closer option for smaller jets is Cannes Mandelieu, which describes itself as France's second-largest business aviation airport and complements Nice, which handles scheduled airline traffic. It sits on the western edge of the bay, roughly 6 km (4 miles) from the Croisette, usually 15 to 30 minutes in festival traffic. The airport's published hours for the 4 May to 23 August season run air traffic control from 08:00 to 22:00 local time, so a late departure after an evening gala may have to move to Nice. Aircraft access at Mandelieu is limited by noise and type rules, so the charter operator decides which field your jet can use. If you still need the aircraft, request it through our private jet charter desk; flights are operated by licensed air carriers that hold operational control, and we act as your booking agent.
| Arrival point | Distance to the Palais | Typical drive in Festival week | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nice Côte d'Azur, commercial terminals | About 30 km (19 mi) | 35 to 60 min | Airline arrivals, larger groups |
| Nice business aviation terminal | About 30 km (19 mi) | 35 to 60 min | Midsize and large business jets |
| Cannes Mandelieu | About 6 km (4 mi) | 15 to 30 min | Smaller business jets within the airport's limits |
| Cannes train station | About 1 km (0.6 mi) | 5 to 15 min | Rail arrivals from Paris or Nice |
For jet arrivals, the chauffeur waits where the handler allows, usually at the FBO door or planeside, and loads luggage while you clear formalities. Our private jet car service explains how tail numbers and handler names feed into the booking. Commercial arrivals can add a meet and greet inside the terminal, with an alias on the name board if preferred.
How do cars move around the Croisette during the Festival?
The Palais des Festivals sits at the hinge of the Croisette and the old port, and the area around it is managed as a security zone during the event. The city's bus network, Palm Bus, adapts its routes around the Palais each year, and municipal closures are announced shortly before the opening. Treat any description of last year's layout as a guide, not a rule.

French law shapes the service too. A chauffeured car in France normally operates as a VTC (voiture de transport avec chauffeur), and the official guide on service-public.gouv.fr states that a VTC driver may not take a client who has not booked in advance, may not be hailed in the street, and may wait at a station or airport for a booked client for no more than one hour. In practice:
- You cannot flag down a chauffeured car on the Croisette. Every ride, including a last-minute one, goes through a booking.
- Pickups after a screening are pre-arranged. The chauffeur names a meeting point a short walk from the Palais, and the desk confirms it in writing.
- Hourly hire is the workaround for spontaneity. With a car on an hourly booking, the driver is already yours, so a change of plan is a message rather than a new reservation.
How should a gala evening be timed?
The Festival's FAQ explains the rules that drive the timetable. Gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière take place around 7 and 10 p.m. Each ticket shows an arrival time that must be respected, access can be slowed by security checks, and once a screening starts entry closes. Tote bags, backpacks and large bags are banned at galas, lockers near the Gare Maritime stay open until 12:30 a.m., and voluminous outfits with large trains are not permitted.
Work backward from the time printed on the ticket. A typical plan for a guest staying in Cap d'Antibes, about 12 km (7.5 miles) away, looks like this:
- Ticket arrival time minus 15 minutes: dropped at the agreed point, walking the final stretch through security.
- Minus 50 to 65 minutes: departure from the villa or hotel, allowing for the evening peak on the coast road.
- Minus 90 minutes: chauffeur on site, garment bag and shoes loaded, route confirmed against the day's closures.
- After the screening: the car waits at a named pickup a few minutes' walk away, or holds until the crowd thins if a dinner follows.
A guest on the Croisette itself may walk to the Palais and use the car only afterward. That is a perfectly sensible plan, and it saves money.

Hourly hire or transfers: which Cannes car service model fits your week?
A Cannes car service can be booked as single transfers or as time. The right answer depends on how your days are shaped. Our hourly chauffeur service page explains minimums and how overtime is handled, and the sibling article on red carpet arrivals covers premiere logistics in more depth.
| Pattern | How it works | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single transfers | Separate bookings for airport, gala and dinner legs | Guests based on the Croisette with few evening plans | Each change needs a new booking under VTC rules |
| Half-day as-directed | One car and driver for a block of hours | Market days with three or four meetings | Hours run while you are in meetings |
| Full-day as-directed | Car stays from morning to after the late gala | Talent, executives, publicists juggling several principals | Driver hours; long days may need a second chauffeur |
| Dedicated car for the stay | Same vehicle and driver across several days | Sales teams, hosts with rotating guests | Book early; this is the scarcest product in May |
The honest trade-off: hourly hire costs more on a quiet day, but on a busy day it removes the risk of being without a car at 11 p.m. If your diary is mostly meetings within walking distance, transfers win. If it involves Mougins, Antibes or Nice, or several people sharing one car, time usually wins.
Cannes limousine or sedan: which vehicle works in May?
Many visitors search for a Cannes limousine, but stretch vehicles are rarely the best tool here. The old town and the hill roads to Mougins and Super-Cannes are narrow, and turning space near the Palais is limited. What works:
- First Class Sedan (S-Class or similar) for one or two guests in evening wear.
- Mercedes-Benz V-Class or similar when a gown needs room, when a stylist travels along, or when the group is four or more.
- Executive Sprinter for production teams and delegations; see Sprinter van with driver.
Vehicle classes, luggage capacity and the "or similar" rule are explained on our fleet page, and a broader view of premium options is on the luxury chauffeur service page. Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach are on request, with availability confirmed at booking.
How is discretion handled for talent and executives?
Festival week is photographed constantly, so the car is part of a guest's privacy plan. Chauffeurs do not photograph clients or post about trips, NDAs are signed on request, and bookings can be made under an alias. We are a chauffeur service, not a security company, and we work alongside a client's own protection team and the publicist's schedule. The VIP and celebrity chauffeur page explains the standard, and our guide to discreet travel with NDAs and aliases covers how alias bookings and need-to-know itineraries work.
Companies sending several delegates usually prefer one corporate account with monthly invoicing; see corporate car service. Agencies and concierges can book through the travel trade channel.
A booking checklist for Festival week
Book the car when you book the hotel, either through the online booker or by calling the desk on (877) 860-3388. Then send, in one message:
- Flight or tail number, arrival airport, handler name if flying privately.
- Hotel or villa address and any gate or access code.
- Gala dates with the arrival time printed on each ticket.
- Number of passengers, garment bags and any child seats.
- Whether you want transfers, hourly blocks or a dedicated car.
Standard ground terms, measured from pickup: more than 72 hours' notice is free; inside 72 hours 10%; inside 48 hours 50%; inside 24 hours or a no-show 100%. Large events can carry a different deadline, shown on your confirmation. Airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting after international landings and 30 minutes after domestic ones.

Frequently asked questions
Can a chauffeur drop me at the red carpet in Cannes?
No car service controls the red carpet. Official arrivals on the steps are organized by the Festival. Your chauffeur drops you at the closest permitted point for that evening, and you walk the final stretch through security, so allow for it in your timing and footwear.
How early should I leave for a 7 p.m. gala?
Work backward from the arrival time printed on your ticket. From a Croisette hotel, 15 to 20 minutes is usually enough. From Cap d'Antibes or Mougins, plan 50 to 65 minutes, because the evening peak and security checks slow the final approach.
Can I hail a chauffeured car after a screening?
Not in France. Chauffeured cars operate as pre-booked services and cannot be hailed in the street. Agree a pickup point and time before you go in, or book the car hourly so the driver is already assigned to you when plans change.
Is Cannes Mandelieu better than Nice for a private jet?
It is much closer to the Croisette, but it suits smaller aircraft within the airport's noise and type limits, and its published summer hours end at 22:00 local time. Larger jets and late departures generally use Nice. Your charter operator confirms which airport works.
Should I book transfers or hourly hire for the Festival?
Transfers suit guests on the Croisette who walk to most meetings. Hourly or full-day hire suits anyone based outside the center, attending galas, or hosting several people, because the car is always assigned to you and changes do not need a new booking.
Do you provide a stretch limousine in Cannes?
Stretch limousines are available on request, but narrow streets around the old town and hill villages make sedans and V-Class vans more practical. For gowns or groups, a V-Class gives more room than a sedan without the turning problems of a stretch.
