A Cabo private jet trip is an easy international hop on paper: from Southern California or Texas the flight is short, and Los Cabos has two airports that handle business aircraft. What catches first-time travelers out is not the outbound flight but the paperwork on the way home, and the half-hour drive that separates the main airport from Cabo San Lucas itself.
This guide compares the two airports, explains what happens when a private jet lands in Mexico, sets out the US rules for the return, and shows how villa and hotel transfers are planned so the car is waiting at the FBO door.
Which airport is best for a private jet to Cabo?
It depends on your destination. San José del Cabo International (SJD) is about 8 miles from San José del Cabo and 23 miles from Cabo San Lucas. Cabo San Lucas International (CSL) sits about 8 km north of Cabo San Lucas, so it suits villas and marinas at the western end.
The distances come from the Los Cabos Tourism Board's airports guide, which lists SJD (ICAO code MMSD) as operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) and Cabo San Lucas International (IATA CSL, ICAO MMSL) as about 8 km north of Cabo San Lucas and 42 km southwest of San José del Cabo.
SJD is the main international airport, with airline service and a dedicated business aviation side. GAP, the airport operator, publishes notices for its FBO at San José del Cabo on its FBO page, including a 2026 call for a catering contract at the SJD FBO, a sign of how established the private side is.
CSL is a smaller airport closer to town, and for a Cabo San Lucas private jet arrival it can be the better fit. For a villa on the Pacific side or a yacht at the marina, it can trim the drive considerably. Ask the operator whether it suits your aircraft and whether customs and immigration for your arrival time are available there before committing.
SJD vs Cabo San Lucas airport: the trade-offs

| San José del Cabo (SJD) | Cabo San Lucas (CSL) | |
|---|---|---|
| Location | About 8 miles (13 km) from San José del Cabo | About 8 km (5 miles) north of Cabo San Lucas |
| Drive to Cabo San Lucas marina | About 23 miles (37 km), typically 35–50 minutes | Typically 10–20 minutes |
| Drive to San José del Cabo | Typically 15–20 minutes | About 42 km (26 miles), typically 35–50 minutes |
| Operator | Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico | Smaller airport; confirm services with your operator |
| Best for | San José, the east cape, resorts near SJD, airline connections | Cabo San Lucas, Pedregal, Pacific-side villas, the marina |
| Watch for | Busy airline peaks at the terminal for anyone flying commercially | Confirm customs, hours and aircraft suitability with the operator |
Distances are from the tourism board; drive times are typical for light traffic along the Transpeninsular Highway and the Tourist Corridor, and Friday afternoons in high season can stretch them.
A useful rule: decide where you are sleeping before you decide where you are landing. A resort in the middle of the corridor makes the two airports roughly equivalent, and then the choice comes down to aircraft, timing and the operator's handling arrangements.
What happens when a private jet lands in Mexico?
Arrival in Los Cabos follows the same pattern as most international private arrivals, with a few local habits worth knowing.

- Before departure. The US operator files an outbound manifest through CBP's eAPIS system, and arranges Mexican landing permissions and ground handling through a local handling agent. Passport details for every passenger must reach the operator in advance.
- On landing. The aircraft taxis to the business aviation ramp. Mexican immigration and customs formalities are completed for passengers and crew, usually in or near the FBO rather than in the airline terminal.
- Exit and car. Once released, passengers walk to the car. The handling agent tells the chauffeur when the group is cleared, and luggage goes straight into the vehicle.
Time on the ground varies with the hour and the number of arrivals. On busy holiday weekends, allow a margin rather than booking a dinner reservation for 30 minutes after landing.
Our series guide to private jet customs and immigration covers the documents and manifests in more detail.
Flying home: the rule most Cabo travelers miss
The return flight is where Cabo trips most often go wrong on paper, because US rules for arrivals from the south are stricter than many travelers expect.

According to CBP's general aviation processing FAQs:
- Manifests both ways. Operators must transmit an APIS manifest for the aircraft and all travelers for both inbound and outbound flights. The online eAPIS system is the usual route.
- Permission to land. After transmitting the manifest, the crew needs explicit permission to land from the port of arrival, obtained by phone before leaving the foreign airport.
- Designated airports for arrivals from the south. Certain general aviation aircraft, generally private and unscheduled charter, arriving from some areas south of the United States must give advance notice and land at designated airports listed in 19 CFR 122.24(b), unless the operator holds a border overflight exemption.
- Overflight exemptions. These are applied for through eAPIS, carry no fee, are valid for three years and take up to 30 days to process.
In practice, a jet flying Cabo to Los Angeles may first land at a designated border-area airport to clear customs, then continue home, unless the operator holds an exemption. Your quote should state which. If the first landing is a customs stop, the total trip time grows, and your car at home should be timed to the final arrival, not the departure from Cabo.
The other half of the paperwork is tax. IRS Publication 510 sets the 2026 international arrival and departure tax at US$23.40 per person for flights that begin or end in the United States, alongside the 7.5% tax on taxable air transportation of persons. A clean quote includes both.
Villa and resort transfers on arrival
Most Cabo guests are heading to a private villa, a gated resort or a boat, and each has its own arrival logic. Want a number for the transfer now? The booker below quotes it, and you confirm the fare before paying.
Villas and gated communities
Gated communities such as Pedregal, Palmilla and Querencia usually check the guest's name at the gate. Share the villa address, gate instructions and the name the reservation is under with the desk, so the chauffeur is expected and you are not left at a barrier after a long day. Our Los Cabos chauffeur service page explains how local operators handle community access.
Vehicle choice
Beach holidays mean bulky luggage: golf bags, surfboards, coolers, sometimes a nanny's luggage. A large SUV suits three or four travelers. Families of six or more, golf groups and wedding parties usually need a Sprinter van with driver or two SUVs, and a dedicated luggage vehicle is common when a super-midsize jet's hold is full.
Boats and marinas
If a yacht is waiting at the Cabo San Lucas marina, landing at CSL and driving to the marina is usually the shortest chain. Give the captain and the chauffeur each other's numbers. For longer stays, an hourly chauffeur for dinners and day trips to Todos Santos saves arranging cars one at a time.
Waiting time and changes
Free waiting is 60 minutes after international landings, which covers a normal clearance. If plans change, a car cancelled more than 72 hours ahead costs nothing; inside 72 hours the charge is 10%, inside 48 hours 50%, and inside 24 hours, as with a no-show, the full fare.
How much does a private jet to Cabo cost?
The price of a Cabo charter depends mainly on where the aircraft is based, how long it stays and the size of the cabin. Rough orientation from the trade press: a SherpaReport guide published in 2021, citing a broker's guideline figures, put all-in hourly rates at roughly US$4,000–5,500 for light jets and US$7,000–9,500 for midsize and super-midsize aircraft. Those figures are dated, and every trip is quoted individually.
Cabo-specific drivers to ask about:
- Wait or reposition. For a week-long villa stay, the aircraft usually flies home empty and returns to collect you. Two empty legs are part of the price; a two-night trip may be cheaper with the aircraft waiting.
- Holiday demand. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year and spring break push up demand for aircraft based in the western US.
- Customs stops. A required first landing at a designated airport adds flight time and fees.
- Group size. A larger cabin with more seats can lower the per-person cost for families or wedding parties. Our guide to group private jet charter explains when one bigger aircraft beats two smaller ones.

The US end: getting to the FBO
Most Cabo charters start at a business aviation airport in the western or southern United States. The car to the FBO matters as much as the car in Cabo, especially on a Friday afternoon.
- Los Angeles: Van Nuys is a common departure point; our Los Angeles limo service handles FBO drop-offs.
- Texas: Dallas and Houston business airports serve many Cabo trips; see our Dallas limo service and Houston limo service.
- Arizona: Scottsdale is a short hop; our Phoenix and Scottsdale limo service covers the valley's FBOs.
The private jet car service page explains how the driver is cleared at the FBO and how the car is held if the departure slips.
How to book a Cabo private jet
For the flight, LimousineWorldwideDirectory.com is your booking agent; the trip itself is operated by a licensed air carrier, such as an FAA Part 135 operator, which holds operational control and takes responsibility for permits and customs filings. The ground legs at both ends are delivered by vetted, licensed local operators and confirmed by one desk.
- Send the brief through the charter request form or call (877) 860-3388: dates, passengers, bags, golf clubs, pets and the villa or resort location.
- Ask two questions about the return: will the aircraft wait or reposition, and will the first US landing be a customs stop?
- Book the cars on the online booker, at home and in Cabo; the exact fare is shown before you confirm.
- Send passports early, so manifests and Mexican handling can be prepared without last-minute calls.

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to fly private into SJD or Cabo San Lucas airport?
Choose by destination. SJD is about 8 miles from San José del Cabo and 23 miles from Cabo San Lucas, so it suits San José, the east cape and corridor resorts. Cabo San Lucas airport sits about 8 km north of town, which suits Pedregal, Pacific-side villas and the marina. Confirm customs availability and aircraft suitability with the operator.
Do I clear customs at the FBO in Los Cabos?
International private arrivals complete Mexican immigration and customs formalities on the business aviation side, coordinated by the operator's handling agent, rather than in the airline terminal. Have passports ready and expect a short wait on busy days. Your chauffeur is told when you are released so the car is at the door.
Why did my jet stop in the US before flying home?
US rules require certain private and unscheduled charter aircraft arriving from areas south of the United States to give advance notice and land first at a designated airport, unless the operator holds a border overflight exemption. If your operator lacks one, the first US landing is a customs stop before you continue home.
Do Mexican and US taxes apply to a Cabo charter?
On the US side, the IRS applies an international arrival and departure tax per person, set at US$23.40 for 2026, plus a 7.5% tax on taxable air transportation of persons. Airport and handling fees in Mexico are added by the operator. Ask for an all-in quote that lists each line.
What car should meet a family of six at a Cabo FBO?
Usually a Sprinter van or two large SUVs. Six people with beach luggage, golf bags or a stroller exceed a single SUV's cargo space. Tell the desk the passenger count and number of bags, and mention any child seats, so the right vehicles are waiting at the FBO.
How far is Cabo San Lucas from the main airport?
The Los Cabos Tourism Board puts the drive from SJD to Cabo San Lucas at about 23 miles. In normal traffic that is typically 35 to 50 minutes along the Tourist Corridor. If you are staying in Cabo San Lucas, landing at Cabo San Lucas International can shorten the transfer to a few minutes.
